In an article today, Mark Rosewater mentioned that the first Mirrodin block was originally intended to tell the story of a plane that had no native life of its own, but to which numerous creatures from other planes had been brought for the purpose of fighting in gladiatorial battles. The first element of that story was preserved, but not the second element, so I now wonder if there ever shall be a block, or perhaps a stand-alone set, in which there is a vast but barren plane, with little to no native life, to which someone has brought numerous beings from other planes across the multiverse to engage in endless gladiatorial games for that person's amusement? I believe that there was an episode of Justice League that featured such a plot, so I am certain that it would also work well in this game.
What does everyone else say about this? Would such an idea make for an interesting set or block?

I dunno about Justice League, but the X-men villain Mojo runs a universe like that, and occasionally dimensionally kidnaps the X-men to fight in his gladiatorial arenas.

The idea is also a bit similar to Ravnica, where most of the races are non-native.
I do not recall having ever heard that, before. Where was that stated? I thought that all inhabitants of Ravnica were indigenous to that plane, while Mirrodin is the plane that has little indigenous life of its own.

Ravnica was a hot spot for planeswalker battles. In the old storyline when a planeswalker summons a creature they pull that creature from their plane to the plane the planeswalker is on are battling. If a planeswalker is defeated his/her summons get stuck on that plane, which is why Ravnica has so many different "races".

Correct, but this was before even the formation of the guilds.
It was the guildpact that sealed Ravnica off from everything else.
The rest was in the older books in which Feather speaks about the time before the guildpact and the reason why the angels built the Parhelion to find out what happened to the planeswalkers who used to visit. (and consequently led to the population's massive variation)

Ah, alright. It's been years since I read Guildpact and Dissension, reread City of Guilds within the last year.

It's a cool idea for a Conspiracy-like set, but I don't think I'd want to see a whole Block like that.
Tarkir is already fight-y enough for my tastes.
