What do you think?
Plenty of the existing Planeswalkers would likely be fine as Commanders,
especially the ones without Emblem abilities.
For example, Chandra Ablaze would likely be a fun, but not overpowered General.
Ditto Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes
(and these are just the first examples that spring to mind).
Do you think they would ever do this?
Or will it always be a "house rules" type of thing?
Additionally, which Planeswalkers do you think would make good Generals,
and which ones would potentially be too good to allow?

I don't see them printing the commander line on any walker outside of a Commander set.
But Commander's Rules Comittee could eventually change the rule.
If this method is used, a perceived balance of planeswalker commanders will be injected into the game.
I agree.
In fact, if I had to predict a way this would end up happening,
it would be in the form of "secondary"(reprint) PWs in a future Commander product-
Sort of like Lorthos, Ezuri and the rest, but reprinted Planeswalkers,
and with the Commander clause added to them for clarity.
As a bonus, this allows them to reprint more PWs, which could be a problem after Core Sets are done.

I'm not so sure about that-
it isn't exactly unprecedented.
10th edition rules nerfed some cards and outright ruined others
(RIP, Diamond Valley and Ghost Council of Orzhova).
Adding Commander text doesn't really affect non-EDH formats at all,
and it's definitely less "ground shaking" than changes they have made in the past.
And I reiterate- they need an outlet for reprinting Planeswalkers now that the Core Sets are done.
I very much doubt they will ever allow *all* of them as Commanders,
as the stupid new rules re: no banlist for Commanders would see many good cards banned.

I dunno powering Karn out or nicol bolas or JTMS might be pretty nuts.
I can't quite tell if you're in favor of that situation or not,
but that's why I'm suggesting it be done with care-
there are PWs that are probably just too powerful as Commanders.
While JtMS is powerful, having only Blue to back him up,
and an ultimate that only affects one player makes him less of a concern to me.
He would probably be less oppressive than someone like Niv Mizzet, the Firemind.
This same rationale applies to Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, who mainly targets one player.
Karn is another story entirely and would probably require testing.
The ones that would worry me are the Emblem makers- Sorin, Lord of Innistrad could get *really* out of hand with +1 emblems stacking up,
and Ajani Steadfast and Elspeth, Knight-Errant essentially win you the game if no one is packing Infect or Mill.

I don't think retroactively is a good idea. but I'm hoping this "privilege" isn't reserved only for commander product. I hope they occassionally put it on standard walkers from time to time.
I had a quirky idea and I don't know if it would go over too well with people, but I thought I'd throw out the idea. Why not have a legendary creature version of the planeswalker before they got their spark and when your commander dies it becomes the planeswalker version from your deck.
For example.
Sorin, Son of Edgar 2WB
Legendary Creature - Human
When ~ dies and is your commander, you may exile him instead, if you do search your Library for a planeswalker with the type Sorin and put it onto the battlefield, that planeswalker is your commander for the rest of the game.
2/2
I don't know if the option to choose any version is too op or not, as you would be able to pick the version that best suited your needs. Though if they did this to Jace it'd prob make mind sculptor banned and prob the mono black of Sorin too which would be sad.

Oh so close to the idea I had when the Innistrad flippers were revealed. Side A = legend with flip clause, Side B = PW version of that legend.
Well, I think they should allow pre-existing planeswalkers as commanders - from a flavor perspective, I always thought the idea of planeswalkers as commanders made sense, and was something that should have been done from the get-go, plus it'd probably force them to re-evaluate their idea to ditch the "banned as commander" list.
They won't functionally change any existing cards. I doubt they introduce the commander clause on walkers printed outside commander sets. As for the RC allowing walkers as commanders that's up to them but I seriously doubt it will happen as some walkers are just way too good as generals. Jace beleren is probably the most innocuous one as a general jace beleren seems obscene. JTMS is also insane just because you get a brainstorm each turn I don't really care to ultimate jace in a multiplayer game but getting a brainstorm every turn yes please.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Tezzeret, the Seeker would mean you'd have an artifact tutor as a commander. First, you get Thran Dynamo so you have the mana to recast him, then you get something else... Having a repeatable every game would seriously decrease the amount of variance in the deck. Liliana Vess is another option for tutoring.
Also, the commander clause is printed on the card, and WotC does not change a card's text unless it's to update it to the current Oracle wording. Card function can change from rules changes, but you should be able to figure out a card's function with only knowledge of the current rules and any copy of that card. Exceptions being cards like Winter Orb/Howling Mine (one turns off when tapped, the other doesn't) and Fungasaur (which actually got its effect changed between printings, because it was so broken). If they do implement this, they'll have to do it with all planeswalkers, and I doubt that'll happen.
Atm the opinion is that it might not be so bad... and perhaps you should ask your friends if you could play it and also have a back up creature commander to replace it if people aren't ok with it. At a local playgroup level its fine, at FNM or if you take the deck between groups then it would be harder.
Tezz and Sorin markov and green plainswalkers interaction with doubling season are the big ones to look out for abuse.
Building a Venser or Tamiyo deck that just fogs/prevents combat until emblem could also be a problem when you have multiple chances at it.
Re: Tezzeret the Seeker and Liliana Vess, I'm not convinced they would be more problematic than commanders like Zur the Enchanter, or Momir Vig, Simic Visionary, which have access to more colors, and are not directly attackable like a PW.
Even the best monocolored decks tend to struggle in multiplayer, in my experience.
As for Tamiyo and Venser, that could be a different story.
Venser's Emblem isn't really *that* powerful in Multiplayer,
but the fact that it stacks is potentially an issue.
Tamiyo's Emblem is incredibly powerful and is probably good enough to make mono-U more competitive in Multiplayer,
though she has to survive a while to get it out and can easily be attacked off the board.
She'd probably be really scary, bannable even, in 1v1.
