I wonder who even remembers Darksteel Garrison, the one off card with Fortify from Future Sight?
I didn't. Until I read that Darksteel Citadel possibly make M15, which is an odd occurrence as there aren't really any Artifact decks and Wizards has nerfed land destruction in T2 to a point of nonexistence.
Unless, of course, being your own land Voltron, as in your own big ass Fort, is what Khans of Tarkir all about. And what would be better than a bunch of nice Fortify equipments to really boost your lands?
I think it could be plausible. A lot of M15's themes point to it: walls, artifacts, "siege" theming, a wonky reprint of Caustic Tar...
I'm starting to wonder if the bottom-up design of Khans is based around equipment. Fortifications and possibly Mounts could work much the same way as Equip (conveniently the "something old" and "something new"), and they'd definitely go along with the theme of warlords. The problem would be that such a theme would possibly lend itself to the constant Voltron-centrism that plagued most of Theros block.
Could a "Mount" Card type use the ability Equip(or a differently named like Fortify for land)? It could be a little like bestow.
Imagine
War Horse 2W
Creature Mount - Horse
- First Strike
- Mount 2WW (Attach War Horse
to a creature, that creaure
gain First Strike and +2/+2.
While is Attached to a creature
War Horse is not a creature.
Attach only as a sorcery)
I understand that Garrison is the first (and currently only) card with Fortify, and it's probably costed high out of safety.
Fortify is cool in theory, but Garrison is a bad use of it.
*EDIT*
I could understand if R&D changes land cards as buildings over to fortification artifacts, because that way you could do 'land destruction' via artifact destruction, and what's a building but a large artifact? The bare land would remain, negating the main feel-bad of LD. Plus, Fortifications could be more powerful than equipments because lands either have no abilities, or weak abilities for balancing purposes. Creatures are more powerful on a regular basis, and thus equipments must toe the line.
Littlexdav: That is a cool idea but that mechanic is rather close to how the Licids were (e.g. Dominating Licid) and I believe MaRo stated they are not coming back as they were too complicated for players to understand and came with a whole bunch of rule issues.
Karric: I can see a spell like this
3RR
Destroy target Fortification and the land it fortifies
and
1RR
Destroy target Fortified land
The Fortify ability can be used in many ways through out the sets, such as Fortify Basic landtype or Fortify Non-basic land, creatures getting stronger if you own a Fortified land and even a wacky Maze's End spin-off (e.g. if you control 5 Fortified lands, you win the game or a Platinum Angel ability).
The Fortifications itself would be able to add a bonus to a whole team of creatures flavorwise. Some ideas:
Artillery Range 3
Fortify 3
When ~ becomes tapped, all creatures you control gain "T: Deal 1 damage to target creature or player"
or a card where you can chose which ability you want
Impenetrable Fortress 4
Fortify 4
As long as Fortified land is untapped, all creatures you control are indestructible
When ~ becomes tapped, all creatures you control gain +2/+2 until end of turn
All examples are of course rough ideas and not balanced
I think it would be cool and if lands would play a big role like this, land destruction could come back in a less frustrating role than simply mana denial which Wizards won't promote by not even reprinting Stone Rain anymore.
Since mount is way to similar to Bestow I think if they were to do it, it would be much more like a fixed version of banding. As for fortify they might do it for some sort of Warlords stronghold. Like turning any land into a Kher Keep since this set looks to have tokens.

Whenever fortified land becomes tapped, put a 2/2 Dragon Whelp into play.
Fortify 2
Anybody who thinks the common removal in Theros is even a little like the common removal situation in AVR needs to go to magiccards.info or gatherer and pull up a list of the AVR commons. Take a couple minutes and scroll through it looking for removal. It makes Theros' common removal suite look like a lush and bountiful paradise where the trees are heavy with black kill spells and we can frolic all day chucking Searing Spears at each other.

"A little" like bestow, yes. Way too much like bestow to be in adjacent blocks.
What if forts were artifacts you equipped, um, built on land? I do think walls or forts are coming along with a bonus to having lots of artifacts, ie: treasure around to steal and hoard. Look at Gild for crying out loud. Hello?

Plausible?

I mean. there's nothing stopping it from being re-used aside from that, but I'm not holding my breath.
