I think it's awesome that WotC gets to explore design space for themes and mechanics from previous sets w/o having to fully revisit the set.
What theme(s) and/or mechanics would you like to see in a future Commander set (or any other specialized set)?
I would be happy with:
- Colored Artifacts (but go into red and green more)
- Domain-ish (cards w/ all 5 colors, sunburst, have the domain keyword, have a flashy effect by spending 5 colors, etc...)
- Quests (that work off of multiplayer & generals)
- Leveling (creatures/artifacts [how cool would it be for a there to be a legendary leveler as a general?!?!])
- Transform - new takes on Generals that can transform)
- Kicker (but deals w/ multiplayer or affects generals, or generals w/ a kicker cost)
- Madness (w/ join forces keyword, where spell would copy for each other player - group discard party)
- Proliferate (there is a lot of design space here, especially in Commander)
- Rebound (but can be cast again for free on others' upkeeps)
- Retrace (there is a lot of design space here, especially in Commander)
- Fateful Hour (but can trigger also on if there is 15 general damage)
- Metalcraft (since there are a greater amount of artifacts used, in general, in a Commander deck)
- Threshold (I have seen some large graveyard develop in Commander games)
I want to see them make a card that has Affinity, Storm, and Cascade.
Call it "Stupid God Awful Combo Card"
Stupid God Awful Combo Card:
{7}{W}{U}{B}{R}{G}
Affinity (this spell costs 1 less to play for each artifact you control.)
Target player gains 1 life, draws a card, sacrifices a creature, shuffles a nonland permanent they control into their library, searches for their library for a card with the same type as that card and puts it onto the battlefield, then adds 1 mana of any color to their mana pool.
Cascade (when you cast this card, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a card with converted mana cost less than this card. you may cast that card without paying its mana cost, then put the revealed cards on the bottom of your library in any order.)
Storm (copy this spell for each spell cast this turn.)
I am probably every color-combination it is possible to be, though it's really hard to figure out what it would mean to be 4-colored....it doesn't seem logical to be 4-colored without being 5-colored.

@deathparallax: One nitpick is that affinity by itself isn't for artifacts. What you described was affinity for artifacts. I want to see more aggressive abilities like rampage, provoke, and battlecry.
This thread got me thinking so I went back to Mirrodin and started working forward. I know not all of these would work in Commander but lets just say Commander and other special sets like Planechase (which is where we got the new Ninjutsu stuff btw)
Affinity - I like others would like to see more Affinity for other things like lands, creatures, enchantments whatever. Modular - Lot of gaps that could be filled. Sunburst - With the high amount of muticolor in Commander this would be a very easy fit. Bushido - I just want to see more samurai, maybe some muticolored ones. Radiance - Again with the level of muticolor in a lot of games things could get very interesting and could cause some very hard choices if your colors overlap with your opponent. Changeling - can fill gaps in any tribal deck. Champion - Much like affinity this could be much more flexible. Persist - Could get broken but in a deck with say Devour could do a lot. Wither - Feels like much more could be done with it. Exalted - Chance may have passed for now but could see it. Devour - I know it was in a Planechase deck but more could be done. Totem Armor - Could help push auras to have more of these but again it was used in Planechase so it could be done for now. Rebound - A lot of fun to play and can cause a big target in a large game. Level Up - More could be done, no multicolored made so far. Battle Cry -Very nice for aggressive decks and would give it a chance in other colors/muticolor. Undying - Graveyard trigger deck anyone? Soulbound - Not a lot made in one set and none for black or muticolor.
Any further seemed a little to soon for a return and I really just didn't want to go any further back. I would be happy with any of these returning because Wizards has shown it can make really cool return cards like Silent-Blade Oni and it gives us a chance to go back to planes without a full set revisit. It also gives these mechanics new toys to play with without any worry about Standard.

Sorry op, but new ninjas and cascade guys were planechase. and they had the one storm card flusterstorm last time we did commander.
I think for sets like this they kinda just use whatever mechanics they need for the set, its way more free form than other releases, which is awesome.
Anyway, id like to see new morphers, cycling, and most of all retrace. In fact, someday I hope we get a cool creature equivalent of retrace where it puts in a token copy of a creature in your graveyard.

Also, I love the idea of Riggers and Contraptions becoming something just to make some Rube Goldberg machine powered by goblins.
