Ok so this is somthing I have been hearing around my local FNM and people I work with, apparently for m13 they might be cycleing out Mana Leak. Which first does not make at all sence. Second, doing this will take away from the checks and balances of the game. Now I am not a blue player so this wouldn't effect me, but I cannot seat hear and ponder this without thinking, what are they going to sub it with? So what would be the card to substitute mana leak? If they are going to cycle this card out, I would come to two guesses. First, there will be only 3 mana cost counter cards out there: i.e. Cancel, Dissapate etc. Or second, this one worries me, if they bring up counterspell. Counter spell is another 2 cost mana spell but rather then one colorless its it is 2 islands. This is an unbalanced card, and I would only shun the fact. Or they could bring back counter squall. But that would only work in B/U control. What do you guys think, if Mana leak was not standard leagle anymore what would be the replacement.

If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
In recent core sets before they switched to mana leak they used essence scatter and negate as 2-mana counters. They like the conditional counters at the 2-mana spot.

Memory Lapse is good but it has a completely different game impact then a traditional counter spell. I doubt it would be the "standard" 2 CMC counter in a base set.

I think Delver would immediately switch their leaks for lapses. It's an amazing tempo card
Control would rather have Leaks since they want permanent answers
The only reason the rumor probably exists is because, much like Lightning Bolt, BSA, and probably Titans, was put in and lasted two years. It wouldn't surprise me if it stayed or left.

Was just thinking that. However, I think they'll need to replace Mana Leak with some sort of common if they do not reprint it. For the draft experience I think it'll be important.
Moved to speculation for the time being. There's not much more here than "A friend of a friend" territory.
Actually WoTC has commented on the icy grip Mana Leak has had on standard lately.
They are very likely to rotate it out.
And this core set is very likely to be a bigger 'refresh' than other recent cores have been.
And Remand >>>>>>>>>>>>> Mana Leak.
They could print something new, of course. Or just something 'less good'.
Remember, Snapcaster Mage is in the format, and SCM with Remand is obnoxiously overpowered for standard.

I am really hoping they reprint some of these god-awful expensive common/uncommon counterspells like remand and spell snare. I do think if spell snare gets a reprint, that we can either expect some good 2cmc spells to be reprinted, non-modern legal cards to become modern legal via a reprint, or some new spicy 2cmc spells.
Heh, agreed... there's no way they reprint Remand in a format w/ Snapcaster Mage. Not to mention the stranglehold UW tempo has had on standard since Bloodbraid Elf rotated.
Its probably time to weaken countermagic in general, and aggro-control/tempo strategies in particular.

This would be my guess as well, with Spell Snare a reasonable possibility at uncommon, given that it's a terrific way to take care of Snapcaster Mage and the card's a staple in Modern.
It's entirely possible that mana leak will be one of the 50% of old cards rotated out for M13. It's also likely, in my opinion Wizards will print a new card, or a slightly revamped version of existing cards to full its slot.
For example they could print a 2 mana hard counter which forces you to discard a card as part of the casting cost (I'm not sure they've ever printed a card like that), or a Remand varrient that lets each player draw a card. Maybe even a Condescend varrient with out scry. Cards like these might balance out standard, without weakening control too much.

Spell snare needs a reprint soon.
Haven't really had a chance to play with that card when it was around in Standart, though, so I have no idea how bad it is)
Memory Lapse is really, really good. It's better than Mana Leak.
