I already can't afford drafts anymore. Even if my financial situation were to improve, upping pack prices would be the death knell of me funneling anymore money to WotC.
But two (idiots) guys at my store bought cases of Innistrad, so I doubt the economy will fall apart from one jaded fan.

Underling Ethu's 263rd report read simply "Yes, my lord.Overwhelmingly, my lord." This marked the end of the Mirran-Phyrexian War.
Pfff.... I know of people in developing countries already paying more than that and the game still thrives there...
You are right. Here, in Russia, we pay more than 5$ for a booster.
Edit: and it's unfair. With new changes coming, we'll be paying more than 9$ for a booster and, don't forget, that in our country salaries are lesser than in USA, but prices are higher. Hasbro could not do that only because some of them plays in Monopoly too much, it's not a game, it's real life. They have rivals. People will quit Mtg and start to play other CCG like WoW or Call of Cthulhu or [insert the name of any other good CCG here]
But smoking is cool.
*Cough*Cough*
I thought it would taste smooth, but the package lied.
I bet that this initiative will actually be to even the pricing of Magic product, so that there isn't so much variance from store to store. There are two LGS near my place, and they are only 10 minutes from each other, yet one of them sells for a quarter more. Hopefully this fixes that.

"If you don't wear your seatbelt, the police will shoot you in the head."
- To my youngest sister when she was 6.
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
Honestly, this belongs in speculation, unless the mods confirm the source.
I've become very leery of the "my friend works at X games company and hears all about it" from the Wargames scene, where this happens all the time and is nearly always wrong.
If they do increase the price... It'll probably dissuade quite a few people, and with good reason. Just because this is a luxury item doesn't mean people don't care about the price. And it'll increase the price of singles indirectly, since boxes will also increase in price.
Honestly, this belongs in speculation, unless the mods confirm the source.

If the mods want to move it, they can but I heard it as a rumor, seems like it belongs in the rumor mill.
What if they raised the price but also altered the pack format? like if they got rid of mythics all together or maybe even added a mythic to each pack?
My LGS's main source of income is tournament entry fees (everybody buys online). If boosters go up, less people will probably show up for booster drafts (not many people show up as it is) which would mean that he would only have Yugioh tournaments to rely on. This would hurt a lot of people, not just the customers.
The sad thing is, even though I doubt this is true, I wouldn't put it past WoTC. Like, at all.
I barely have incentive to pay for packs and play the game now, and another cost increase in packs will likely cause a lot of people to leave, including me. Even if you don't buy packs by the ton, the ethics of this is just lame, after all the customers have done for Wizards.
If the mods want to move it, they can but I heard it as a rumor, seems like it belongs in the rumor mill.
Saying this might make the mods mad but the mods here seem to think rumors mean confirmed information. I saw a post being deleted because it was a rumor without any facts supporting it. A rumor is a rumor because there aren't any facts to support it. A rumor with supporting information is no longer a rumor. I'm not a mod here, so what do I know?
These are the answers I don't understand. You're ok with paying $4 a pack but $5 is just absurd and you will quit the game? Did you quit smoking when the packs jump up atleast $1 a year? Did you stop driving when gas was at an all time high? It's $1, if $1 is going to make or break you then you probably shouldn't be ordering pizza, smoking, buying drinks or buying magic product to begin with.
I'm not trying to single you out, this goes for anyone who shops like this.
Example: today at work a guy comes in for a pack of cigs. I tell him they are 5.45 plus tax. He didn't hear the plus tax part, so when I told
Him the total was 5.8X he said he didn't want them they were to expensive.
Really! .40 cents just broke your bank? You should probably
Not be buying them to begin with.
Let's do math, shall we? I'll even be nice to use the lowest price shop near me: Walmart.
Current price: $3.98/pack + 7.75% tax (or $0.31) = $4.29/pack
Purchase of 5 packs: $21.44
So by the math, you'd actually LOSE a pack that you could normally afford from the previous.
I guess I would just buy 4 packs to stabilize it out, but I doubt it. I might just buy from our traders and sellers here to get what I want, but the prices I know will rise if such was the case.
Why isn't this in speculation, wouldn't the rumor that we aren't returning to kamigawa have more to base on since it actually has what the mods would consider a legit source. friend of a friend is one of the shadiest things I've ever heard of, a guy at one of my former LGS swore up and down he knew what Ghave did since forever because "some guy" told him so and was completely wrong. I don't believe it, because it would be silly for me to, just apply this to your everyday life. Some guy at your LGS says this, wouldn't you be more skeptical? I would.
And to everyone who thinks "it'll kill mtg" I hardly doubt $3 more is going to stop a single person from drafting, especially if they're going to do it to a core set, which they design for beginners, and will probably have a bunch of new stuff that'll make you buy it. (ie Titan replacements)
How do you think the increase in costs to open sealed product would affect secondary market pricing?
Most singles enter the market from stores opening packs. Pack prices increasing means the cost of opening packs increases. Eventually, a 25% increase in costs will filter to the consumer with a 25% increase in prices. Junk will still be junk but good cards will be priced quite a bit higher to offset the higher costs.
On another note, most other TCGs have an MSRP of $5 and none of them are as good as Magic. I think other games would benefit from a price reduction to match Magic rather than the other way around. The lower price has always been a competitive advantage for Magic.
If the mods want to move it, they can but I heard it as a rumor, seems like it belongs in the rumor mill.
Rumors in the actual main rumor mill are at a certain standard, and this rumor does not meet it. Anyone can make up a rumor, for all we know this guy did just that. There are rumors with more basis that aren't even in the main part of the rumor mill.
I heard through a chain of rumors that WoTC is planning on increasing MSRP of packs to $5 starting with the release of the next Core Set, M13.
Rofl... gas is cheaper than when they raised the cost last time. Hasbro has had record breaking profits with mtg. If they raise it to 5$ a pack they will lose to many people. They are a bit expensive at the moment and a true luxury item, but people tend to make room for it. If they up it they would just shoot themselves in the foot.
Don't think you have to worry about them upping the cost at all.
I have doubts on them increasing the MSRP by 25% during an economic slump/downturn/whatever. WOTC/Hasbro may be looking to maximize their profits (as would any business), and entertainment may be among the last things many people will cut from their budgets, but as an already expensive hobby with minimal production costs aside from design and art, it just strikes me as ill advised.
That said, even with an increase in pack prices, I doubt I'd feel it too badly as I buy singles online exclusively, but it'd be interesting to see the numbers on both WOTC's end and those of online/local retailers.
As noted above, singles prices would likely rise accordingly (though I imagine non-chase commons/uncommons would remain fairly stable, the more choice rares and mythics would probably shoot up some, and even jankier stuff might see a minor spike to at least cover the increase cost of cracking packs), so it'd be interesting to compare the extra revenue brought in through purchased packs/fatpacks/boxes (the latter two of which would also likely have to see an increase unless WOTC were pushing those options hard) versus the decrease in people purchasing packs and instead moving to the secondary market. And there would be a move. With the increased risk of cracking packs, players would have a heightened incentive to go right for what they want. A 25% higher cost is a 25% higher risk of getting garbage, even if it's slightly more valuable garbage. People already complain when they drop $100 on a box and walk away with nothing of value. Imagine paying $120-140 for that same box and getting that same garbage.
Whats the MSRP right now? The LGS i play/draft at is 3.99$ a pack, but I buy boxes for $84 and packs for 2.75$ at another store.
I can't see people wanting to pay 16+$ for a draft or close to 150$ for a boosterbox
$3.69 is MSRP. Most FLGS and chain vendors (Target, WalMart, etc) sell at $3.99
Also, $16 is usually how much drafts costs as there is an entrance/prize fee on top of the boosters.
If Hasbro raises to $5 without adding cards/rares, they won't sell hardly anything (meanwhile, stores that sell singles like Star City Games will have a field day).

MSRP is 3.95$ currently for a pack. Most places sell individual packs cheaper than MSRP with cost to the stores being something like 70$ a box (Or well they used to be back when I worked at a comic store (been awhile don't know if that has changed). Also jumping up in cost an entire dollar isn't really wizards thing either as in the past their increases have been around 50+-15 cents or so as I recall. We haven't had an entire dollar jump ever.
My LGS in New Zealand already charges the equivalent of US $7.13 for a single pack. Not to mention they sell booster boxes of the newest set for the equivalent of US $158
It's already prohibitively expensive to buy new product here in NZ, but some people still do it for some reason.
