This expansion is quite interesting because it is set a long time ago, when some of Magic's mechanics were not present yet. Will we get a pure retro set or shall we get new mechanics in an old set?
Some mechanics such as Improvise or Modular are fair game but Vehicles and Equipment seem odd as they never appeared in old sets. So do you think we will get an old school set or will Wizards choose modern design over continuity?
They have already said while the story is older the mechanics and design of the set will follow modern card design.

I think we will actually see more stuff than usual for one set. Urza the artificer and massively powerful godlike mage should not lack access to something the usually amnesiac Jace has.

I think it would be cool if they would try to use 90's design guidelines within today's design principals. But let's face it-- just like every company trying to capitalize on the nostalgia for beloved stories of old, they're not going to try to aesthetically or developmentally mimic the past. They are going to use all of what they consider to be tried and true techniques of today and make allusions and nods to the source material.
Predictions:
The set will use the current card frame, but the showcase cards will use the old card frame and a retro-art style. They'll look great, but it'll be weird seeing something powered like Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider done aesthetically to look like Craw Wurm.
There will be planeswalker cards, and at least one of them will have been a retroactive add-on to the story. They'll say something like "look, it's The Wanderer way back in time! You didn't see that coming did you? If I were designing it, I'd probably make a couple crazy old-walkers, and charge 10+ mana for them. We'll see.
There will definitely be equipment, and vehicles seem quite likely considering the aesthetics of the Brothers' War (not that I know that much about the lore). And colored equipment seems likely too. They put it in every set nowadays.
Creatures will be have insanely pushed stats as they always do now, and there will be a few broken artifacts with splashy abilities that may end up banned here or there. These will be along the lines of Lithoform Engine, Paradox Engine, and The Ozolith.
The only thing that's really going to be back with a vengeance is the characters and lore. It'll be a new version of it, but it's been long enough that most of us will be happy to see it.
but For a fact maro said a lot of character who don't have cards are finally happening here so with that said I will tell you this set is likely gonna end the wait for Gix and ashnod to get a card
Ashnod is literally mishra's sidekick during the war
And as for Gix he attacked Mishra while he was taking dragon engines also he was trying to kill both of them for the two power stones during the war
And maybe we'll see Gaea, Hurkyl, and/or Drafna. All those old characters that just showed up by name but have either never been depicted or have never had a card.

Hurkyl is a pretty safe bet. Drafna less so, but certainly possible. Gaea has never taken physical form in the lore that I can find, and that would be a very big retcon for a card that would disappoint a lot of people for various reasons. I doubt we ever see Gaea on a card, and if we do, a future Phyrexian invasion seems more likely when the Gatewatch obviously just can't cut it.

I would like to see at least 1 infinite combo created by several cards such as the station cards from fifth dawn blasting station
I would be disappointing if we don't get playable versions of older cards like mishra's war machine

Remember how irregular of a set stryxhaven was? sometimes you'd get 2 rares per pack, and certain multicolor combos weren't present at all. i'd bet we'll see some new card types and/or mechanics that make this set feel pretty different, like playing in a lost age, with some nostalgia, some things we've never seen.
My prediction on this set is that it plays out just like the original story, and then we get like a fractured timeline thing where the modern day phyrexians and praetors show up instead of the original one. Or maybe it is not an alternate storyline at all but rather it shows that all of this was caused by the Phyrexians in the first place.
This way it advances the storyline we have in place with Vorinclex showing up in Kaldheim and we figure out more of what is undoubtably going to be the big final story arc, and maybe it can include the mainline walkers we have in the story modern day.
As Core Set 2019 had only one Doble-Face card, Bolas, I also predict this set will probably have only one Double Face card the ascending of Urza as planeswalker.

Cause it was an enemy set that focused those 5 color pairs, how did you miss that fact?

all of them, just because the set takes place in the past doesn't mean modern things like equipment and vehicles can't appear here.
Yeah, I’m confused as to why the OP would suspect differently.
the mechanics and the lore don’t reflect each other perfectly. Expect the usual stuff we’d expect for most standard sets, except with the caveat that this will likely resemble mechanically a mixture of themes from Dominaria and Mirrodin/Kaladesh sets.
Legends, artefacts, energy, these all could matter.

I think so, too. Maybe even Sagas to tell some of the stories that are not in the focus of the set. Well if the set would already care for Legends, artifacts and sagas than historic could be there, too. Thran Artifacts should play a bigger role and they are kind of historic xD. A higher number of artifact creatures and maybe vehicles seems likely, too.
I expect more colored artifact cards than usual. Artifact sets are often problematic and the fact that they are willing to do more colored one could solve some problems. I can see a card for the Powerstone or at least one card for each the weak- and might stone.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Equipment is older than improvise, so how is the former "odd as the never appeared in old sets" but the latter "fair game"?
Planeswalker cards were used even in a set without planeswalker characters (AFR), Equipment and Vehicles are lore-wise very important to the war machine, and colored artifacts are a tool we were prepared to expect in great numbers in the next artifacts-heavy set. What exactly do you expect in place of these modern staples? Zelyon Sword?

I expect all to show up. They're not going to sacrifice game play (or design options) just to satisfy the..."flavorists".
I could do without no more vehicles at all because (after a few years of playing with them) they seem like just "harder to grok equipment". They do not add much to the game imo.
This set should use some design space for meld (or create a new similar mechanic) in my opinion. It could also use mechanics like tek or tribal golem that combine to make a better version like brass-talon chimera.
I expect some construct type cards like ones created from karn, scion of urza

I don't think that would actually be pleasing to "flavorists". If you care about flavor, you want the mechanical execution of a vehicle to be a Vehicle. I think the consideration here is more along the Melvin axis rather than the Vorthos axis. Mechanical traditionalism rather than flavor traditionalism. Though "tradition" has actually changed there, so "regressive mechanical traditionalism".
And you know what? Mechanics usually got replaced by something better, so going back for the sake of going back is just as bad as the connotation you probably think of when you hear or read "regressive" in reference to a policy. It's like building a new theme park and deciding because it's themed around the middle ages you give up on modern sanitation and safety measures.
