I recently took 2 surveys on the mothership. One was about planeswalkers, no new art or concepts sadly. The second one was about worlds. There were your typical questions about the existing planes and mechanics and what you'd like to see, but Kamigawa seemed to have a little extra focus. On top of that, the survey ended with a LOT of questions about what anime I was familiar with and what elements from anime would seem appropriate in MTG- for example- "How appropriate are laser guns in MTG?"
It would seem to me that one of the worlds we might be seeing in the next 3 years is an anime-based world, along the lines of Cowboy Bebop or Full Metal Alchemist.
Anyone else out there take the survey and have any take away they want to share?
I'm not a huge fan of anime (I know very little about it) and know very little about the worlds, so share away.
Edit: here is a link to the survey found on the mothership.
very appropriate:
Best Girl (when this creature enters the battlefield, it becomes the Best Girl and every other creature stop being the Best Girl.)
even more appropriate than laser guns that, by the way, were already a thing in magic, right? Urza and his robots? Original Urza's rage?

How i feel about competitive players and casual players in EDH: The competitive are german tourists, the casual are italian tourists, both in a italian beach. The italians asking themselves "why are the germans here?" make a legitimate question, the answer is because the beach is beautiful, no matter the country you came from. The italians wanting to ban the germans are dumb, because if the germans pay for their stay and follow the rules like everyone else, they have the right to be in the beach. Hovewer, if the germans started to ask themselves "why are the italians here?"... they would be dumb as hell.
I took the anime survey today. I think if they base the popularity of planes on surveys like this, it's no wonder Kamigawa ranks low, when put up against Innistrad and Ravnica directly like that.
I also commented that if they turn Kamigawa into an anime plane in a revisit, I'd quit the game. I realize that sort of threat is practically meaningless, but that'd be my line in the sand. Reducing Japanese culture to ******* anime is just too much.
On one hand its not unreasonable as a lot of MTG's mechanics could easily translate into an anime-styled setting. DFC for example easily work for things like Magical Girls, while Emerge is kaiju and giant robots.
But on the other hand, if I wanted anime-styled card games, there are plenty of alternatives like Yu-Gi-Oh or Force of Will. That the only reason they would be tapping into this market is because their test run with the anime-styled walkers went extremely well.
For a moment I thought that the Mothership was hinting toward more anime/manga illustrations in future Magic sets similar to what they did with the Planeswalker cards in War of the Spark. However If they do it again I'm hoping the alternate art cards don't end up being Japanese exclusive where they're also available in English and other languages. The reason why the alternate art Planeswalkers in War of the Spark were Japanese exclusive was so that Wizards of the Coast could sell more sealed product at the LGS and it worked.
On a side note I'm thankful for Wizards of the Coast putting out more official online surveys as it promotes better transparency between the company and the players as a means to help Magic grow as a whole. It sends a more positive message in a society where people care less about escapism within the entertainment industry and more about using the platform as a place to attack others based on their political beliefs. There's other avenues for people to get their political views across and the entertainment industry shouldn't be subject to it.
"Restriction breeds creativity." - Sheldon Menery on EDH / Commander in Magic: The Gathering
"Cancel Culture is the real reason why everyone's not allowed to have nice things anymore." - Anonymous
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" - Mark 8:36
"Most men and women will grow up to love their servitude and will never dream of revolution." - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
"Every life decision is always a risk / reward proposition." - Sanjay Gupta
I'd be so hyped for naruto-like ninjas and kaijus. but i really hope thy don't put in any modern or futuristic stuff. it would just be too weird.
I mean even stuff like mirrodin does not sit well with me...

Honestly the trope part was way more filled with cyberpunk tropes than anime tropes. They probably are planning to make a cyberpunk set.
(by the way many of the tropes listed, like terminators, cyborgs, body augmentation, holograms and so on were present on dominaria during the brothers war and the invasion saga. idk what to think. are they simply ignoring that part of the lore?)
The anime question seemed more like a demographic info, it doesn't seem like there is a concrete project behind it

Agreed. Cyberpunk was done as early as Tempest, clearly in Invasion block, every time we went to Mirrodin and Kaladesh, and let’s not forget Parhelion II in war of the spark... or Izzet as a whole.
The occasional anime art is refreshing, as it is something different. Anime as the norm should not be the place of magic, as it has been said that is for Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh.
Stop trying to make MtG Yu-Gi-Oh, Gretchen! It’s never going to happen. We panned your Invocations from Amonkhet and we’ll do it again if needed.
We need not worry. Anime women are busty. MtG has moved away from busty women. There won’t be big-eyed, busty women on a new magic card any time soon that is officially printed original WotC approved art.
Unnamed planeswalker proceeds to create a demiplane with (Raw skill/ Raw Power / An Artifact / Friends / A mix of the prior).
Demiplane is basically a super anime version of the the matrix.
Unsuspecting planeswalkers that visit the actual plane get knocked out.
Then they get hooked up via a magical neural jack to the new anime demiplane.
In which our heroes are Isekai'd and trapped in the equivalent of a multi-genre video game.
They gave 5 settings and how you like them : ( lorwyn, ravnica, dominaria, innistrad, kamigawa)
They asked about Dominaria (setting) and themes+mechanics from the set Dominaria.
Then they asked about Innistrad Themes+mechanics
Then they asked about kamigawa themes+mechanics
After that they asked about how familiar you are about some anime
Then they asked about cyberpunk themes (and aparently the matrix and cyber invasion, also asked about coorporations)
They asked if we would prefer in a return set every thing is like in the last visit or we prefer fresh things and some reference and throw backs.
On the kamigawa part they asked if we would like the return of ogres and the O-bakemono and they asked about cat folk (in kamigawa) and also dog folk and fox folk(kitsume).
I care less about the anime setting and more about that scifi theme. I think a scifi would could work as long as it was more... Dune than Matrix, if that makes sense.
My first thought was this was marketing for a future tv show. We are getting the netflix Chandra show so they might be looking to see if a magic cartoon would (either Chandra or a future show) might work with anime influences.

I just want a return to Kamigawa. Improve the mechanics and focus more on the world as feudal Japan and less on the strange, abstract art.
I want that too. I don't think they can botch it any more than they did during its initial inception so I;d like to see what they can do with it henceforth. I just don't wnat them to make a new Japanese-inspired plane to "fix" the mistakes embarked on in Kamigawa.
Who knows what else they will do or where else they'll go to.

Probably a new plane. Why revisit something that people didn't like, according to 15-year old data anyway, when you can just make a new plane with more modern Japanese influences in pop culture, a slight nod to Shintoism, and call it a day.
And that is the more obvious way they would make Not-Kamigawa.

They can just visit kamigawa and change it as much as they want, it has been more than 10k years since the last time we saw it

Last time there was talk of an Asian-influenced plane, we got Tarkir instead of Kamigawa.
I mean, there's one thing that's interesting about this survey; theoretically any plane that has sufficient knowledge of the mechanics of the multiverse could easily have something approaching "sufficiently advanced" magic, when they realize that this strange esoteric red energy can provide them with gigawats of electricity with a reliable methodology.
i mean ravinca just played host to an essentially multiplanar war that sent pulses of energy across the multiverse, especially attuned to 'walker sparks. given how wizards is always so unspecific but insistent about how that sort of thing works. it's not beyond imagining that said interplanar beacon made an alarm bell in a control room somewhere go off, the indicator light for "civilization making contact" flipping from green to red.
