Curses are big in the source material... and we see a kiss turning a statue to flesh. I doubt enchantments are a white green thing... magic in general is not a hero thing in fairy tails... the fairy godmothers have it and merlin has it and the villains have it... but I don’t see the good guys (white green) doing enough for it to be a theme... I do see sleeping beauty’s enchanted sleep, the beast’s enchanted rose, little mermaid’s silence and ability to walk on land, and many other curses showing up...
I think the storybook mechanic shows in all colors and isn’t a draft theme... like double faced cards in inistrad... we may get a related draft theme (like werewolves). But you could be right and it goes more like levelers from rise of the eldrazi... but I am curious why you went red green instead of white green?

Enchantments can represent many things in fairy tales; blessings, curses, quests, events, etc. GW could also be the primary pair for pairing, leaving room for RW to focus on something a little more combat-centric.
I first proposed GU as the primary storybook colors, but the mechanic appears to encourage ramp, so I opted for the two colors best at ramp. Much like DFCs in Innistrad, of course there will be storybook cards in every color, but I suspect we'll get a greater volume in RG.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. petruscaex asked: Is White getting any new effect or ability that it didn't had before?
It’s doing something in Throne of Eldraine it’s never done before in our ongoing quest to help white in Commander.
Now I am interested. What could it be?
Being good?
I think with Time Spiral block it has done about everything, but ramp, card draw, and counterspells exist more in a 'White technically has done it' sense. I would say delving, but I think after Hogaak they might be giving designers concrete shoes and putting Delve above Banding on the Storm Scale

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
I would expect that the thing he is referring to is either something that white has done but never much and they are letting it free (like counter magic) or something more specific than ramp or card draw while also less noticeable...
For example ‘with this new set white now has clone effects!’ Would be an accurate but misleading statement talking about return to ravnica...

Perhaps it's "Draw N cards, then put N cards from your hand on top of your library in any order." That way, white can exchange less useful cards for more useful cards without actually gaining any cards. For example, a white Divination could say "Draw two cards, then put two cards from your hand on top of your library in any order." Basically, white's equivalent of looting. Since white is allowed cantrips, it could also get something like "Draw three cards, then put two cards from your hand on top of your library in any order." Basically a white Brainstorm, but at a higher mana cost. Say, 3W?

And considering Sagas fall under the "Historic" banner and Eldraine is a new-to-us plane, it's unlikely the set will include much of its' history on the first go-round.
There's no reason sagas have to appear alongside Historic.
That's not what I said. They may not have to appear alongside Historic, but they will still trigger Historic effects on existing cards, which means flavor-wise the cards have to explore historical events and people on Eldraine. Unless the set is going to have a deep focus on the history of Eldraine while also advancing the story of whatever Rowan and Will are up to in the (possibly) present day, Sagas are unlikely.
Is it bad I want the Goldilocks card to be a Legendary that cares about bears?

Triggering historic cards from other sets that won't even be in standard at the time doesn't mean Sagas need to be particularly historic. It would be very counterproductive to set such a significant bar on a mechanic that we already know WotC is keen to use multiple times.
Also, it's probably also unlikely they'd do two different alternate-layout cards in the same set.
I don't see why.
One takes design space away from the other? Their low bar of what it takes to confuse magic players?
Having an alternate frame doesn't have anything to do with design space. Level up and Split cards both use alternate frame but they don't really share any design space. At best, alternate frames are correlated with certain design space as they tend to be used most often for some form of modal cards that may operate similarly, say Level Up and Transform, but even then, not that similarly.
The complexity cost is more of a reason, but that's not really any different from putting any other two complex mechanics together, which is happened plenty before, and Sagas, despite the special frame, aren't really very complicated.
I think it'd be more a matter of you want one of the frames to define the set. The storybook frame will be the big thing Eldraine is doing. I say save Sagas for Return to Theros, they're perfect for the enchantment theme. You can adapt stories like the Argonaut, the Trojan War, and The Twelve Labors of Heracles.

It's a knight themed set. You are going to have white soldier and knights. They are going to be fighting red goblins and black demons. There will be blue mages manipulating the situation for fun. Then the white knights are going to call on the green mages for help fighting off the demons in the second act of the 2nd set that comes out. There will most likely be a large number of legendary creature. There might even be a new sub category called hero's for white.
I thought I've read somewhere that Eldraine will only get one set in a row. Nevertheless, the knights being plants for Throne of Eldraine makes sense...but I expect the only goblin to appear in Throne of Eldraine to be the MTG version of Rumpelstiltskin. There are no Arthurian goblins to my knowledge, and which (other) fairy tales have goblins in them? It's also hard to think of any fairy tales with demons besides the Devil in them, and to my knowledge, there are also no Arthurian demons.

trevorstrnad asked: will eldrain have 3 sets (like the recent guilds of ravnica "block")? would be kinda sad if a new plane will only be featured in one set
A: Eldraine is just featured in one set. Baseball (the codename of the next set) will be on a different plane.
Also remember this is is magic version of fairy tales and Arthurian myth. Just like they added zombies and catfolk to Theros and angels and minotaurs in Amonkhet, we will see Eldraine feature some of magics characteristic and iconic races added in. While demons aren't found much in fairy tales, your right some stories have the Devil (and many other dark supernatural characters) who makes deals with people which could also be filled by magics version of demons.
Honesty one of my favorite things is seeing magics races translated in different worlds, like goblins being kappa like on Kamigawa or the returned on Theros.

Don't see contraptions entering black border unless it works with sideboards (like war of the spark karn or mastermind acquisition)(saving spots of the sideboard for cards that can search for them or interact with them, the "out of the game" zone). Adding a seccondary library is a thing that will probably never comeout of silver border or conspiracy-type draft products.
What I wonder is which types are going to be fleshed-out tribes in Eldraine? Innistrad took classic movie monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman and turned them into entire tribes. Will we see multiple Giants or Wolves? I think we're all expecting Faeries of course.

Commander 2018 hinted at land in grave cards, artifact cards, "top of the deck" and enchantment. The land in grave was a theme in modern horizons, artifact had suport in urza and goblin engineer, top of deck and enchantment got together a land (Hall of heliod's generosity), and it announced a planeswalker heavy year imo.
If we have to look at Commander 2019 for themes foreshadowed i would guess:
a Morph set.
A mechanic that values cards going into graveyard/ can be recast from the graveyard (maybe eldraine book mechanic is a flashback for creatures...)(not like creating a token of the creature but having a cost that would be prohibitive to pay over and over again, for exemple the goldilocks could be exile 3 creatures from any graveyard to play her from graveyard)
For populate/tokens deck i can't imagine a good/new mechanic for it soo maybe a return of embalm or eternalize? Or maybe we see a new Army token/mechanic that is not like Amass but can benefit from it. If we are going to a viking set i could see we geting a embalm mechanic but instead of making a zombie token you instead make a spirit army token...
What I wonder is which types are going to be fleshed-out tribes in Eldraine? Innistrad took classic movie monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman and turned them into entire tribes. Will we see multiple Giants or Wolves? I think we're all expecting Faeries of course.
Oh Fairies, Merfolk and Humans for sure (we already have seen pictures of merfolk creatures in the set). Wolves are very likely. There is at least one fairytale with a giant and magical plants. Ah and other magical beasts like Unicorns etc. Dragons are very likely, too. I can see something like Constructs, Golems or Scarecrows. Some normal animals like birds and cats are possible, too.
Depending how far they like to go I can see some demons, kobolds etc. I can't see any sphinxes, angels or hydras.
Wel also know the conflict is Rowan and Will searching for their missing father the king Arthur figure.
Oh, okay, so Rowan and Will are basically the princess and prince of Eldraine's Camelot. In that case, Eldraine's King Arthur should be fairly true to the source, appearance wise. That's a relief.

Based on the needs every set has, yeah, I could see Giants being a proper tribe. Since Angels and Sphinxes are unlikely, I could see larger Faeries playing their role. You know how the Zelda series has Great Fairies that play the approximate role of Angels? I picture larger Faeries being like that. Even Demons could be supplanted by black Faeries. And really, what better world to promote Faeries as a WUB tribe than the Fairy Tale world?
I also think BR Ogres are likely. We might see more GW Cat tribal, too. After all, Cats play a role in fairy tales. Could BG be Hag or Witch tribal, I wonder? Of course red could have some witches as well, but it's something different for BG than the usual graveyard shenanigans. And hey, Cats are often familiars for witches! Which of course means we could see some black Cats as well.

I do like the idea of different kinds of armies that could play with amass. I could see an army of knights maybe in red white. Maybe the storybook is an abilty that is on creatures that plays from the graveyard? I think it would actually be better for the madness deck than the flashback though. I think your right about embalm because it would be cool but not fit with Eldraine.

My thought (based on making my own fairy tale magic set);
Humans WUBRG
Duh
Dwarfs- W
Iconic fairy tale character, most famously found in Snow White but can be found in many other stories (often the male version of helpful fairy/witches in the woods). We could also see a rumpelstiltskin as a dwarf.
Faeries- WU
Duh as we already seen but Maro has said they mixed up the colors for them. Blue seem a lock in due to mtg faeries defaulting in blue and for this world I can see blue faeries being the wise faeries as well as tricksters. I think we will see white faeries in the form of the helpful fairy godmothers and as default magics faeries having flying and white being the allowed to have small flying creatures. I could see some faeries in RBG being possible but I think they will be more one offs. I also wonder if we might also see human sized faeries or if they will stick to the smaller versions.
Beasts- G
From Beauty and the Beast as well as the general fairy tale trope being beasts in the forest I could see us getting some beast creatures. I think they could also replace hydras place as the iconic green creature.
Demons- B
As said above they can play in the deal with the devil tropes and are one of magics iconic creatures.
Dragons- R
No brainer
Wolves/Werewolves- G
The big bad wolves is found in a bunch of stories and some version replace them with werewolves so I could see them returning. Given Arlinn, Tolsimir and Nightpack Ambusher also point to them in a thing in this set.
Gaints/Trolls/Ogres/Orcs- RGB
All these creatures play similar roles as male fairy tale monsters that typically will try and eat the protagonists. I could see all of them or only one or two.
Goblin- R
While not often found in Grimm* fairy tales, goblins do feel fairy tale like and is a characteristic race that would certainly fit with no issue.
Hag- B
I don't feel like vampires and zombies really fit on a fairy tale arthur world so I think the black iconic will be hags to be the (many) wicked witched found in fairy tales.
Merfolk- U
We saw them already in and fit as both a fairy tale tropes and since merfolk are already a characteristic race for magic.
Elf- G
Not sure if we will see elves but nothing outright to be seems like a good replacement and elves while not found in traditional fairy tales, would fit.
Birds, Boars, Rats, Cats, Elks, Foxes, Frogs, Goats, Horses, Hounds, Rabbits, Spiders and Insects could appear as one off talking animals/cursed people often found in fables and fairy tales.
Characteristic and Iconic creature I don't think we will have on the plane;
Angels
While some of the more christen influenced stories had angles in them, IMO the fairy godmothers faeries already fit the role both flavor and mechanically.
Sphinx
Same as angles basically minus that the Greek Sphinx as far as i know didn't influence any fairy tales
Vampires and Zombies
Undead stuff doesn't really fit on this world IMO and might help Eldraine and Innistrad seem different since both are being Germanic and Western European influenced.
Hydra
Like the rest doesn't really fit IMO but I could see them appearing amount the monsters in the woods.

Elves are in fact fae, so I don't think it's that hard to include them. Like with past depictions of goblins, I'm sure it's just a matter of different designs or names.
Also, goblins are a kind of fae too. Brownies, imps, dwarves, gnomes, kobolds. All faeries. Boggarts, Hobs, bugbears, bogles, sprites, banshees, selkies and silkies. Just a matter of typing them differently their names.

And think you just summarized how over done high fantasy in magic and why they decided to add in the grimm* fairy tale elements to the set.
Wel also know the conflict is Rowan and Will searching for their missing father the king Arthur figure.

I was wondering the same thing. Commander 2017 had interactions with Amonkhet's cats, Ixalan's vampires, and Dominaria's wizards. 2018 kind of hinted at planeswalkers and the lands matter in modern horizons. I don't think any of the keywords synergies have any obvious themes that would fit in Eldraine. Maybe a discard theme that synergizes with madness but isn't madness?
Gaze upon an empty, white throne
A legacy of lies,
A familiar disguise
Sing with me a song of conquest and fate
The black pillar cracks beneath its weight
Night breaks through the day, hard as a stone
Lost in thoughts all alone
Don't see contraptions entering black border unless it works with sideboards (like war of the spark karn or mastermind acquisition)(saving spots of the sideboard for cards that can search for them or interact with them, the "out of the game" zone). Adding a seccondary library is a thing that will probably never comeout of silver border or conspiracy-type draft products.
Here's my revised list of projected draft themes:
WU Faerie Tribal
UB Tricksters
BR Ogre Tribal
RG Storybook Mechanic
GW Cat Tribal
WB Royalty Matters
UR Shapeshifting
BG Hag/Witch Tribal
RW Pairing
GU Card Draw Matters

I do like the idea of different kinds of armies that could play with amass. I could see an army of knights maybe in red white. Maybe the storybook is an abilty that is on creatures that plays from the graveyard? I think it would actually be better for the madness deck than the flashback though. I think your right about embalm because it would be cool but not fit with Eldraine.

My thought (based on making my own fairy tale magic set);
Characteristic and Iconic creature I don't think we will have on the plane;
"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Also, goblins are a kind of fae too. Brownies, imps, dwarves, gnomes, kobolds. All faeries. Boggarts, Hobs, bugbears, bogles, sprites, banshees, selkies and silkies. Just a matter of typing them differently their names.
