No, Gideon and his friends got FUBAR'ed due to his Hubris, the gods really had nothing to do with it other than Erebos summoning the titan. Kyhteon was only tasked with slaying the Titan, something he did, then when Erebos showed up to claim the remains, Kytheon's Hubris lead him to throw Heliod's spear at Erebos, which the god deflected easily and returned to sender. Had Kytheon only done exactly what he was tasked to do, and nothing else, his friends would not have died. That was the whole point of it. He had lost faith in the gods not due to any failing of them, but due to a failing in himself, something he only overcame when he talked to Oketra. The gods were never the issue, Gideon was. This is also why he is so obsessed with protecting others, he failed to protect his friends and due to his hubris got them killed. He regained his faith, his story is over, he is the most expendable member of the Gatewatch. Of the original Gatewatch (if we include Nissa), he is still the most expendable, because we *know* that Nissa returns to Amonkhet after Bolas leaves the plane thanks to her Hour of Devastation planeswalker deck which has cards that reference her being there *after* the God Pharaoh has left the plane, and we know he only left it when he invades Ravnica. There are basically only two planeswalkers whose deaths that can lead to Chandra being in mourning when her comic starts: Gideon and Jaya, and there is a 50/50 shot that either of them dies, it is possible that both do, because they are the most expendable among the "heroes". Jaya has fulfilled her story purpose, and Gideon's story is done.
Except that Erebos likely showed up to kill Kytheon and his friends anyway since they killed his Titan. Heliod had to have known Erebos wasn't going to take the loss of his Titan sitting down. He knew he was sending at least one mortal to his death. Maybe Heliod knew that Kytheon was a planeswalker and sought to remove him while also eliminating a threat to his followers? It wouldn't be the only time he's stabbed his champion in the back (or chest).
And Gideon has plenty of reason to help Ajani rescue Elspeth simply because he's a good-natured, heroic guy. Now that he's regained his faith, he has all the more reason to stick around and keep being the hero that he is. And considering he's the only one who can shrug off most attacks and now has the Blackblade, I'd argue he's the most valuable member of Gatewatch. He's certainly good at getting **** done.
Jaya's death makes sense for the story; she only has so much longer to live, the time has come for her to pass the torch to her protege. Chandra only needs one death to grieve. Gideon still has a lot of story potential, if not as a lead, then as a supporting hero. Heck, he might become a mentor to a new hero, like Teyo.
My point being, Gideon's rarity in this set is determined only by his relevancy to the story, not the potential for death. Gideon's one of the three mythics because he's one of WAR's three major characters alongside Liliana and Bolas. If anyone's going to get a dramatic death, it's Liliana, as evidenced by the trailer. Now, I suggest we drop the subject of who's going to die in WAR, this isn't the topic for that. This topic is about which planeswalkers are which colors and at which rarity, and we already know Gideon is a monowhite mythic rare, and why. (And for what it is worth, I apologize for getting a little hot under the collar earlier.)
The planeswalkers that still have some uncertain colors and/or rarities are:
Dovin
Jaya
Kasmina
Narset
Sarkhan
Tamiyo
Agreed that rarity has to do with relevance to the story, but I think that only increases his chance to die. Being a main character does not protect one from dying.

Whatever happens to Gideon, his potential death is largely irrelevant to this discussion. What I did notice today going through the crunch is that in monoblue there is only room for either Tamiyo or her signature spell, not both. This leads me to believe that potentially either she is UG or her signature spell isn’t a spell, but an artifact. Such as A Tamiyo’s Journal reprint, but that couldn’t happen because of investigate. So what seems more likely to you all?

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
He has mentioned that they are more willing to do colored artifacts now, because it allows them to really push the powerlevel without breaking standard (again).

Mark Rosewater said that of the rare planeswalkers, 5 of them have one color and 6 of them have two, so that might help slightly.
If this is true then either Sarkhan/Jaya is multicolored or Tamiyo is. Since Jaya has no precedent set in another color, if Tamiyo is monoblue then Sarkhan has to be the rare. If Tamiyo is UG (which is the only possible combination she can be) then either Jaya or Sarkhan are the mono red rare. If Sarkhan is the rare then he has to be RB, because RU is taken but ral and RG by Domri. Tamiyo can’t be UW because of Teferi. Any of these possibilities don’t really make me happy and are a change from the established color identities.
Right, now that we know Jaya's uncommon, Sarkhan's going to be rare. And since only five of the rare PWs are monocolored and six are multicolor, that means either Tamiyo or Sarkhan is going to be multicolor. If Tamiyo is multicolor, she'll be GU. If Sarkhan is multicolor, he'll be BR. Since we already have plenty of green PWs at rare and few black, I'm going with monoblue Tamiyo and BR Sarkhan.

I think this is probably right, but I’m honestly disappointed in Sarkhan being BR. It’s a significant backslide in character and I’m wondering if potentially something major happens to him for him to be BR again (maybe Narset dies?). Anyway at this point it’s all just speculation until one of them is confirmed.
Presumably they are still on Theros trying to put everyone to sleep, but lore isn't my forte. If ashiok doesn't show up I would guess that a return to theros is in the works and they aren't mentioned for story lead in purposes.

Ashiok was on the stained glass if I recall correctly, so we know they are in the set. However, I don't believe all 36+1 planeswalker cards have been revealed yet.

To be fair, he was the only one of the Gatewatch that was expendable as his story was over, and he was the least popular. I am however, pleasantly surprised that Jaya survived.

No-one's ever going to convince me that my favorite member of Gatewatch was ever "expendable". I don't ****ing care whether or not Gideon was the "least popular" of the Gatewatch, I liked him. He's what pulled me into the story. He was the kind of hero I wish I could be. They could have written up a new story for him. They could have used him on a variety of worlds. But nooo, heroes with swords and muscles aren't allowed to do jack **** anymore, especially if they're male. No, the selfish femme fatale b***h gets to shine instead. And any excuse you use to justify killing Gideon off is only going to make me angry. The ****ing haters got what they wanted. So please kindly drop it.

For what it is worth, I liked Gideon as well, and would rather have seen Lily die (because despite what people say, she *is* evil and a villain, sure she is a villain protagonist, but a villain nevertheless). But I am also a realist that knew that they didn't really have anywhere to go with the character anymore.
But at the same time, I am very happy that my favorite Gatewatch Member didn't die (It's Nissa).
