As I was reading yesterday's story and considering that Bolas is making a trap for Planeswalkers on Ravnica, it suddenly hit me that there will likely be a ton of planeswalkers on Ravnica during the story event -- FAR too many to be represented on cards. And what better way to represent them all than with a Planeswalker Masterpiece series?
After a lands-themed Masterpiece series like the Zendikar Expeditions, I can't imagine a more highly sought-after theme than Planeswalkers. And it would all but guarantee the block's success (from a sales perspective), and it would definitely cause prices to plummet on the Standard cards in the sets proper (e.g. no $60 mythics like Karn).
Highly doubtful considering the Masterpieces are at least supposed to represent things that exist on the plane in question at the time of the set. To make a PW Masterpiece series they'd have to print multiple versions of the same character, which makes little sense.
Masterpiece: Multicolor is more likely. This way enough 'walkers that aren't otherwise in the set could be included, but nothing paradox-causing.

Now that you mention it, it's more likely not to happen not because of multiple versions of the same planeswalker being included, but because it would create a lot of story complications if they included planeswalkers that are dead or offplane or really shouldn't be included in the story at this time for other reasons (e.g. Ugin). Since they don't do Masterpiece series that often, they'd want to be as inclusive as possible with the planeswalkers they selected, and not being able to include some of the most popular ones for storyline reasons (Ugin, Elspeth, etc) would diminish the impact.
I was thinking the next masterpieces would be in the core set. That would create a huge incentive for people to buy the set beyond the new players that it is aimed for.
I could see Planeswalkers being the theme of the third set's Masterpieces, in which case Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Liliana of the Veil are autoincludes, but for the first two I expect multicolor to be the main theme, or Guild-themed cards in general (so maybe also stuff like Golgari Grave-Troll and Life From the Loam.)

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Looks like they are doing planeswalkers as masterpiece. But all the masterpiece planeswalkers are reprints.. So maybe they will just have new planeswalkers be in the block and masterpiece are all old

At least one of them is new (Ral) and one is unknown (probably new Vraska). More important, these masterpieces will be treated differently from the previous ones (they won't appear in regular packs).
If what they showed today is all, then in reality Guilds of Ravnica will NOT have any Masterpieces.
Yes there are some Promo Mythic Edition Planeswalkers that you can buy at a premium from Hasbro, online, for one day while quantities last but NO, no "Masterpieces" in the set. An infuriatingly absurd dissapointment.

Been a member here for over a dozen years. Playing since '95 just got lost in the twitch shuffle.
Am I wrong here? I figured that "Masterpieces" are the "Golden Tickets" (think Willy Wonka here) that have the rarity of one per case. BUT, they are being sold on the Hasbro website for something like $200???
My question is this: Will they still be Masterpieces as we have seen them in the past? 1/case w/ a unique border? Or are they going to be only sold on the Hasbro site? (I am guessing there is something I did not read &/or are missing something here)
Sooooo, as the previous poster pointed out, why in carnations are they being called "Masterpieces" if they do not follow the history of Masterpieces? Is this a misnomer?
They aren't called Masterpieces. The set is called "Mythic Edition" They will not appear in boosters - they learned their lesson that they lead to reduced pack sales.
