From the Vault transform is coming up... and there are only a handful of cards that qualify for it. Meanwhile Mark Rosewater is talking about the difference between flip and transform and doesn't seem to be taking a side.
I theorize that like the unification of the Planeswalker uniqueness and legendary rules, flip and Double Face are going to be unified, and the FTV product will include flip cards from Kamigawa reprinted as double faced.
I know there are a number of minor differences between the two, but I doubt a game of magic has ever been played where those differences were relavent (exaggeration, but not much of one).
Flip cards have the same mana cost and converted mana cost as both forms while DFC have the same CMC but no mana cost on the back.
Flip cards aren't affected by moonmist and similar effects.
Transform cards can't be turned face down (by Ixidron) (but can be manifested).
Clones of flip cards always copy the base form and can then flip. Clones of transform cards copy the current form and can't transform. (A flipped card that becomes a copy of a different flip card copies the flipped version regardless of the current status of that other card)
What other material differences exist, and do any of them compare to the change to planeswalkers (you can now have multiple Jaces out as long as they are all different versions)? Do you think a unification likely? If not why not?

(U/B) is :symbu: or :symub: and the same is true for the other 9 hybrid symbols with their two colors in for the last 2 leters of the code. ((2/B) and co are :sym2b:)
Alternatively {UB} or {2B} in [mana] tags are (U/B) or (2/B) T is :symtap: and T will give T in [mana] tags

Mark Rosewater has talked on blogatog repeatedly, and unambiguously, that flip cards will NOT be errata'd to use transform.
Yes, but those all seem soft to me. The type of answers designed to ferment conversation without lying or admitting that the change is coming. The kind of word dodges he uses when he wants us to get excited about a set that he isn't excited about.
Mark can't snap his fingers and remove the changes, the rules manager has to do that.
They do work differently... for now.
They would never reuse a rules word for a different rule no matter how much the players ask because they can't change printed cards and it would cause confusion.
Maybe it is wishful thinking on my part but I don't actually see a good reason not to do it other than 'Flip cards are retired so it doesn't fix much because players don't see the differences until they are in older formats and thus already invested to the game.' Which is fair... but disappointing.

I disagree 100%. MaRo has flat-out said that they will not change flip cards to use transform because it would fundamentally change how those cards work, and it's not worth doing because it's not an ongoing mechanic (unlike the recent Planeswalker change).
