When I was looking back through some of my old Ice Age and Mirage cards, it suddenly occurred to me that the Dominaria set coming up next year would be a phenomenal opportunity to put a Dominaria-themed Masterpiece series. Cards that only make flavor sense on Dominaria.
The card that got me thinking about this is Teferi's Puzzle Box, and there are many, many more that have Dominaria-specific and Dominaria-themed names that would fit in the series.
Anybody want to throw out ideas for cards that could be in such a set?
The big problem with Amonkhet's masterpiece set was that it was themeless, in contrast to Zendikar's lands and Kaladesh's artifacts. (Though it was clever to sayi "force of will" over and over again in the trailer.) This could be "retro"? But aren't all masterpiece sets retro? So I'm lost at what it could be.
The other problem being that Amonkhet's frame was ugly af and hard to read. Just ask Hazoret the Pervert.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

This is only a fraction of the total number of such cards available. It's easy to pick a more specific theme for a Dominaria Masterpiece series from the raw number of cards available. If I had to take a guess, it would be a very nostalgia-inducing type of theme (like, "Oh hey, remember that one place or creature on Dominaria? Well, here's what it looks like now").
Oh, and before anyone scoffs at cards like Serra Angel and Llanowar Elves being included on this list, just a reminder that the Ornithopter Masterpiece is around $60.
I think the theme can be "Dominarian Heroes" and feature all Legends of the main stories of the past, Ice Age, Mirage, Weatherlight Saga, Time Rifts & Mending and so on.
It would be a flavour-heavy Masterpiece serie, they can reprint notable and loved characters (and doing so they can choose from valuable and less valuable cards) and it will be a marketing home-run for commander player that might want their commander in a very bling frame!

I don't know if they will do this as it significantly affects the value of boxes that don't have one. I would rather them make better cards for standard and older formats, rather than make bad standard cards and cram hard-to-get super mythic rares of older cards into boxes.
I don't know if they will do this as it significantly affects the value of boxes that don't have one.
It affects the value of the boxes that don't have them because people open more boxes of sets that have them to try to get the Masterpieces. Why would Wizards decide, "Hey, people are buying too much of our product and prices of singles are plummeting. We shouldn't do Masterpieces anymore!!"??
Wizards never gave "it sold too many boxes and tanked the value of other cards in the set" as a reason for stopping. That was a reason why they were going to keep doing them.
Their biggest reason why they were stopping was because they couldn't consistently come up with a coherent theme for each set. With Dominaria being a single set based in the mainstay plane for Magic's first 10+ years, a nostalgia theme should basically construct itself.
I would rather them make better cards for standard and older formats, rather than make bad standard cards and cram hard-to-get super mythic rares of older cards into boxes.
They did both in Kaladesh block. I mean, assuming by "better," you mean "stronger," Kaladesh block has a ton of powerful cards that are seeing play in older formats. Chandra is getting close to being a staple in any Modern midrange deck that runs red. Torrential Gearhulk is a one-of in many Modern control decks. Also, Fatal Push.

The quality of Masterpieces depends on where you are on the buyer/seller spectrum. People who play standard by buying singles and have no interest in sealed product have a lot to thank the Masterpiece series for because of what they did to other cards' prices.

I like this idea, and would prefer to see this. However, my bet is on it being cards never before printed in the original frames, in the original frames.
I wouldn't be adverse to masterpieces being new proper creatures from the dominaria storyline. They don't need to make them standard legal, but how cool would it be to see a card that finally does urza, mishra, gerard, etc... justice?

Making masterpieces an actual rarity instead of fancy versions of other cards would be a mistake, plain and simple. Such a choice would cause catastrophic player backlash, and the price of these cards would be insane if they see play in any format.
Somehow the Timeshifted cards are the "Masterpieces" of Dominaria, though they are not in premium form (at least not all of them)
As true Masterpieces, "Relics" and "Locations" are fine when we return, but returning legendary creatures seem off, flavorwise, unless they really are still alive. Generic creatures such as Llanowar Elves are fine I guess.

I feel you. As a dragon collector I dread the day we return to Tarkir and have Dragon Tempest Masterpieces. (But that frame would be amazing)
I really hope they give masterpieces a longer break than just the Ixalan block. I´m so sick of my average draft pool value approximating ~2$ unless I happen to win the lottery, drafting masterpiece sets feels so bad. I don´t think they should bring them out more often than every sixth set or so.
But if they do bring them back for Dominaria, I think that the most approprate frame design would simply be the pre-8th frame in foil, like the Sword of Fire and Ice promo. People would go nuts over that.

Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
Oh god, I just skipped between threads and it struck me: If they do bring back slivers in a big way, they could do a Slivers-masterpice series. Cringe.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

A Slivers masterpiece cycle would be very falvorful, but I don't think there would be as much hype as WotC expects from Masterpieces cycles...
This.
As a fan of both Slivers and premium foils,
even I would roll my eyes a bit at Sliver Masterpieces

Although I think it is super unlikely, I think it would be super cool to see either the Teferi creature or the Teferi Planeswalker in the Zendikar Expedition boarder.

On phasing:
1 ivory tower
1 zuran orb
1 necropotence
1 hypnotic specter
1 icy manipulator
Its hard to find cards from dominaria, but i decided to go with cards that defined early magic or are casual all-stars.
I want a necropotence with cool art possibly with a human wasting away as they trade their life for power.
A full-art blood moon with the original art would be nice too.
