I agree that it is most likely double faced cards...
Okay some weird thinking but...we have explore... what about a subset of cards that do something when they are dug up (or found via explore).
What if there are some cards that have something weird going on with their backs such that they were marked and had an effect when they were on the top of the deck...or when they are drawn.
Basically lets cards have functionality at the expense of being revealed or known to all players. I remember thinking when double faced cards were being discussed as speculation that it wouldn't be insane to have different backs for certain cards.
What if there are "treasure" cards with different backs (lets say gold) that have special effects when they are dug up?
To clarify where these tangents started: a large set typically has either 264 or 269 cards in it (based on whether it has 3 arts for each basic land, or 4). Such a set has a rare sheet with 53 rares (x2) and 15 mythics. The spoiled Ixalan rare sheet has 53 rares and 15 mythics... but the set is advertised as having 279 cards. So there are 10-or-15 cards unaccounted for. This has led some people to the conclusion that there are more rares and mythics we haven't seen yet.
Some possibilities include:
- A small DFC sheet, like that used in Origins.
- Doing something special with the land sheet, like they did for Dragon's Maze.
- having a special-rarity slot, like Timeshifted or Conspiracy. Some have supposed that 'treasures' might be used here.
- simply changing their common or uncommon sheet numbers from their recent defaults.
- simpler still, they may have changed their numbering and counting to now include cards exclusive to planeswalker decks, when they have historically not included that number in the set card count.
They could make a "miracle kind" of mechanic for double faced cards. That would be neat. It would play well with some of the spoiled cards.
Uxaphaka's entrangling woods
legendary land
T,pay 1 life: add one mana of any colour.
As you draw this card, if its not your draw step, you may reveal this card and pay {3}. If you do, put it into play discoverd (transformed)

Uxaphaka's Hearth
Legendary land
T:add <> to your mana pool
Whenever a creature attacks you, it gets -1/-0 until end of turn
Something like this could be strong and fun
It would be a fun grimick

Is that crazy... probably. But it is interesting.
You are the first person to say anything. Are you agreeing with yourself?
Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."
