I was just pondering the possibility of basic Deserts in Hour of Devastation. Like Wastes, basic Deserts would be basic lands that tap for C. With all the Deserts-matter cards in the set, this would seem like an ideal opportunity for another colorless mana basic land. There are two problems however:
The basic Desert name has already been taken. This doesn't outright prevent basic Deserts from being made, it would just mean they have to have a different name than just plain old Desert.
This would confuse the "five basic land types" rule. A player might believe that Desert counts as a basic land type since it would be found on a basic land and thus try to say that the basic Desert contributes to Domain, for example. There would also be the mistaken belief that Desert now automatically provides C, when in fact we have a cycle of common Deserts in HOU itself that produce colored mana rather than C.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I thought about desert basics too. I doubt they will do it but it's certainly within the realm of possibility. This would allow space for desert matters mana like they did with snow. But again, I highly doubt it.
Woah wait, I just imagined a nonbasic forest that produces R instead of G and it sounds amazing. I just wanna wish if something like that was created that so that it work with Evolving Wilds with breaking the "basic land" rules.

They could have had Desert Plains, Desert Island, and so forth, but that would still lead to confusion about Desert as a nonbasic land type.
