Here, MaRo explains that they consciously decided to do a living Egypt rather than the commonly depicted dead Egypt. That is to say that, typically, Egyptian tropes involve treasure hunters plundering tombs, setting off traps, fighting off mummies and evil curses in tombs filled with sand and scorpions, etc. This depiction of Egypt is from a time when it was a thriving civilization rather than the ruins of one.
I read this and immediately thought about what will transpire in Hour of Devastation. Either in flavor text or some story so far, it's been said that when Bolas returns, the Hekma will be taken down, presumably leading to the "devastation" alluded to by the title. This would make sense with the increased Desert theme MaRo has also talked about.
My point is that it seems like the thriving civilization of Amonkhet is about to collapse. Could this mean that they did this knowing that when we eventually return to Amonkhet, it will allow them to explore the "tomb-raiding" tropes they couldn't this time around? I imagine it will be years before we return, so in that time, Amonkhet could eventually become the equivalent of Egypt as it's represented in, say, The Mummy, rather than Gods of Egypt.
What do you think? Was the state of Amonkhet planned to allow for this change?
I think it's already more complicated than that. Only the smallest sliver of Amonkhet is still thriving: the city of Naktamun. The rest of Amonkhet is already collapsed. I expect that whatever Bolas is doing, this plane is not where it's being done at. Rather, he's just using this plane to power whatever (dark) ritual is needed to achieve his goals. When that's done he'll leave the broken husk of Amonkhet behind, along with it's handful of surviving inhabitants, who will have a new reality to contend with and a civilization to build. In some number of years we'll be able to return in a Rebuilding Amonkhet set where we explore the mysteries of an old, pre-Bolas culture.
My personal hope is that Amonkhet can one day be restored, perhaps with help from Nissa. Maybe a return block will see Amonkhet go from ruined wasteland (the state it will most likely be left in) to the start of a new thriving civilization?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
The interesting thing is that the world-building of Amonkhet actually would have allowed for plenty of ruin-delving and uncovering of a lost civilization if the planeswalkers had just spent more time journeying outside the Hekma.
My personal hope is that Amonkhet can one day be restored, perhaps with help from Nissa. Maybe a return block will see Amonkhet go from ruined wasteland (the state it will most likely be left in) to the start of a new thriving civilization?
Just like Dominaria, Zendikar etc.
I'm thinking the same though. We will probably return to Amonkhet (in a Standard set or a supplemental product - while others may care a lot, I'm fine with either) to see the restored Amonkhet with the Gods restored to a more benevolent state. But considering that a majority of the plane lies in ruins that doesn't preclude the set from containing some desert ruins.
---
I can imagine that Amonkhet will generally avoid the themes of digging up ancient tombs since adventure-world Zendikar already will go to that well - including the restored world tropes as well.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."
