Amonkhet Masterpieces will be called invocations. Sounds like we're getting some spells.
What do you think/hope to see? I'm hoping for Mana Drain though I can see Force of will. Cruel ultimatum and the cycle seems a given. I also like Dark Ritual's chances but it's on the lower end
I have said it multiple times before, and I will likely need to say it again: Auxiliary Products have no influence on what is and isn't printed in a standard legal set. The opposite is also true.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
An invocation is the act of calling upon something or someone for assistance; i.e., praying to a god, summoning a familiar, etc. That said, a mix of creatures, instants, and sorceries seems right, with the odd enchantment.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Exactly. Pretty much any nonartifact nonplaneswalker is fair game.

I hope its an entire series of whiffs so I don't have to blow my wad on upgrades for my cube like I did with the previous MPS cards. But I know its going to be:
Ravages of War
Armageddon
Wildfire
Damnation
Wrath of God
Day of Judgment
Upheaval
Time Spiral
Plow Under
Demonic Tutor
Mystical Tutor
Enlightened Tutor
Thoughtseize
Tarmogoyf
Snapcaster Mage
Liliana of the Veil
Library of Alexandria
and Black Lotus
(I'm obviously being sarcastic...but only slightly)

Sufficiently godlike planeswalkers could be fair game too, Bolas getting a special version would be awesome and a great flavor fit. Ugin is equally godlike, but would be harder to justify flavorfully.

Possibly, but I doubt it.

Now that planeswalker is a card type, you can summon one of these all-stars of the Magic universe to sling spells alongside you.
I mean, these names are selected very carefully, and if you were going to pick an epic sounding name for a Planeswalker Masterpiece series, I don't know if there's a better fit than "Invocations".
Maybe I'm wrong (and I'm kind of hoping that I am since I would compulsively need to collect all of them), but the more I've dwelt on it, the more I believe that this theme is going to be Planeswalkers. It's fairly early into Wizards trying out this "Masterpiece series" thing, and I think that they'd still want to generate as much excitement as possible for them. And casual players absolutely LOVE Planeswalkers.
I thought wizards has said that legends and things would only get used if they would make sense flavour wise - summoning Planeswalkers seems alittle hard to explain to me especially if you consider than many of the walkers are currently mia.

Yeah, I know, it doesn't make a TON of sense flavorfully (unless this is supposed to be Bolas' Rolodex or something). But "Invocation" would not be the word to use for just a random assortment of spells related to "calling on" something. They would have picked a theme that was a lot more cohesive, and if this was supposed to be some kind of "divinity" theme, there are probably a lot more accurate names to call the set than "Invocations."
I mean, invocation means calling on someone or something for aid. That is a spot-on flavor match for casting a Planeswalker card.
Again, I know it doesn't make a ton of flavor sense, but doesn't "Invocation" = "Planeswalker cards" make a lot more sense than "Invocation" = "a bunch of loosely related cards that can be interpreted as being at least somewhat related to something being called upon?"
These cards are supposed to be Wizards' chase cards of the set that drive sales. They'd better get a catchy name that really sticks with you and makes the type of cards that are in the set easily recognizable.
In any case, we'll know for sure sometime tomorrow (there will be random spoils throughout the day through different social media postings).
Good list! Except Jokulhaups. The Masterpieces have been established as being re-branded and fitting in with the flavor of the plane the set is based in.
AS Manite has stated invocations is the action of invoking something or someone for assistance or as an authority.
This could be anything but you could say summon. Summon would relate to creature but, after doing nothing but artifacts they could be casting a wider net this time and be going for an assortment rather than a strict type theme.
I think we will see creatures but it could be anything that you cast. This is a very open theme.
I don't see counterspells like Mana Drain and Pact of Negation as good candidates for invocations. They'll probably reprint cards related to Gods and Planeswalkers plus powerful board-wipes.
What do you think/hope to see? I'm hoping for Mana Drain though I can see Force of will. Cruel ultimatum and the cycle seems a given. I also like Dark Ritual's chances but it's on the lower end
We got Cruel Ultimatum and Damnation right now in MM2017.
Whatever, we will never see P9 again so I don't know what I want to see. Cruel Bargain, Temporal Extortion or Demonic Tutor would be fine for me, they are not banned.
Ah, yes, Wrath of God is fine too.
I have said it multiple times before, and I will likely need to say it again: Auxiliary Products have no influence on what is and isn't printed in a standard legal set. The opposite is also true.

I agree that they will be exclusively Sorceries - the definition of Invocation is not that relevant - look at the definition of expedition.
