While every time Jace pops his head up, half the Magic world winces, there is another Walker that has totally plastered herself over Magic, perhaps more than Jace, and that is Nissa. When do you think Magic will have another green walker?
EDIT
- I should have been more specific. I wasn't saying she has more total cards form the beginning of time, that would be Jace by a landslide. I meant lately. Nissa 5 : Jace - 2
Magic Origins - NISSA and Jace
Zendikar II - NISSA
Planswalker vs. - NISSA
Innastrad - Jace
Kaladesh - NISSA
Planswalker solo decks - NISSA
No offense but you gotta be kidding by saying Nissa plastered over more than Jace. Up until M15 Garruk was the green walker that took that spot. While I agree that we need more mono-green walkers, Nissa being the face is a very new thing;
Lorwyn-Garruk
Alara- No mono green walker, one multicolored green walker
M10-Garruk
Zendikar- Nissa, first appearance
M11-Garruk
Mirrodin 2- No mono green walker or any walker with green in them
M12-Garruk
Innistrad- Garruk.
M13-Garruk
Ravnica- No mono green walker, two multicolored green walkers
M14-Garruk
Theros- No mono green walker, three multicolored green walkers
M15- Nissa, with Garruk being BG
Tarkir-No mono green walker, one multicolored green walker
Origins- Nissa
Zenidkar 2-Nissa
Innistrad 2 No mono green walker, two multicolored green walkers
Kaladesh- Nissa
The issues looks like wizards gives the green walker slot to a multicolored green walker.

Elspeth, Tamiyo (who was only multicolored for game design reasons and chances are her next card will be mono-blue), Koth and Tibalt. With Ajani and Sarkhan being mainly focused on one color could also be mono-colored if needed.

Yes, we definitely need some more mono colored planeswalkers, or at the very least see some new PW characters. The last new mono colored characters we had were from C14 with only Ob Nixilis not getting a multicolored card yet.
The only mono-color walker that was printed that either didn't become a 2-color or didn't die was Ob Nixilis.
Elspeth, Tamiyo (who was only multicolored for game design reasons and chances are her next card will be mono-blue), Koth and Tibalt. With Ajani and Sarkhan being mainly focused on one color could also be mono-colored if needed.
Every planeswalker could be somehow made into any multicolor version together to its "mono" version.
Adding black to each of them makes them in some way "evil" , thats a classic for Tezzeret and Sarkhan , even Garruck turned black while evil and the latest Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast too.
Its clishe and easy to design.
Especially the walkers that have a origin in the 3-color planes can easily be that color combination, while the "mono" color planeswalkers focus on pretty specific themes that are quite bound to that color.
- Ajani turned into 2 colors (first boros then selesnya in his final incarnation) and probably will stay that way, his mono-white incarnation in ajani steadfast was probably due to him being printed into a base set, where they just printed mono-color walkers, save for Bolas and Garruk for plot reasons.
Ajani was also the first multicolor PW to turn mono colored through story reasons. Him being any combination of the three Naya colors at any time isn't too hard to believe depending on what function he is performing in the story or what they may need at the time as a card.
- Tamiyo turned bant colors for design reasons, ok, but probably will not see another printing in quite long while.
It wouldn't surprise me if we see her again sooner than most think. She did pop up in a story while Ajani recovered from his experience on Theros. She is basically going to be an honorary Gatewatch member, and I'm sure Jace will have to learn from her how to keep his mind calm, as that is something he struggles with.
As for the others:
- Koth was only present in 1 block 6 years ago, never seen another incarnation and unless we return to new phyrexia he will not be seen again.
It wouldn't surprise me if we head back to New Phyrexia again. If Elspeth comes back she may want to help as she feels guilt for running, and that might be when we see Koth again. Or if he somehow hears about the Gatewatch, which would be strange, he could seek help, but I would much rather have Elspeth go back for redemption than Koth going "Power Rangers, we need your help."
- Tibalt never saw another incarnation in SoI and was so badly recieved that he will probably never show up again.
I'm sure we'll see him again, probably on Ravnica where he fits in perfectly with Rakdos.
- Sarkhan has only seen 1 incarnation as mono-red, before becoming temur(?) colored. I could very well see him as Gruul colored like his first incarnation in the future... IF we ever see him again.
If he wants revenge on Bolas for what he did to the dragons we could possibly see him, although it may not be as a card.
Wizards has done a very meticulous job in clearing the scene from almost every other mono-color planeswalker to leave the spotlight for the gatewatch members and if things go as they are going now, we will see incarnation after incarnation of the mono-color gatewatch walkers leaving other mono-color walkers very little space.
We MIGHT see a new mono-colored planeswalker, but most probably it will be a "once in a while" occasion and will not return regularly in order to not steal the spotlight from the "heroes".
Unfortunately this is very true. They are trying to stick with this brand of heroes, recognizable characters to make people invested in the game and/or story. All we can hope for when it comes seeing new mono colored walkers is another Commander product with them as the focus.
It's understandable that there's starting to be some player fatigue with Jace and friends. Magic followed the Weatherlight Crew for a little over 4 years, and by the time it was over there were people tired of seeing the same old faces. We've been with Jace and co for almost 10 years now. Nissa is surprisingly the one I wasn't expecting to hear complaints about.
Then again, I still wish they didn't do what they did with Garruk. Turning him evil was fine, but completely dropping the story of Garruk's murderous rampage because Jace waived his hand or something was less than satisfactory.
Elspeth has been pretty much set up to be brought back soon and iirc her death was finalized before the gatewatch idea was.
Yes Koth and Tibalt haven't been seen in awhile but neither has Tezzeret or Bolas and they being reintroduced. Since wizards has been showing us New phyrexia a lot lately, that probity a sign they heading back there soon, as well one of creatives goals is to stop leaving as many plot threads left hanging which phyrexia has been.
I'd argue that. I think it less of wizards pushing mono-walkers out and trying to establish multicolored walkers and consolidate their characters. Both Nahirir and Daretti where both moved into a color pair that didn't have anymore walks, since Ajani and Sarkahn are in different colors now. Other wise why did they keep Ob in mono-black?
As for Ajani and Sarkahn they both also have had one color in all their cards showing that is their core color and won't be a huge stretch to seem them mono-colored if spaced allowed it, unlike other mute-colored walkers like lets say Ral. If they really wanted Ajani out of white, why not print Gideon in M15 and have the full gatewatch?
I think we will see a few mono-colored walkers to fill in when the block needs one and they don't want/storyline reason can't use a member of the gate watch, like Ob was the black walkers for BFZ.

After Amonkhet, it's been a long enough time for the story to return to Theros, and could be for a number of reasons - Ajani wants the Gatewatch to help get Elspeth from the Underworld, some relation btwn Amonkhet gods and Theros gods makes it necessary, Gideon is feeling homesick, Ashiok is up to something, Nicol Bolas is up to something, etc.
In any case, I hope that return Theros will recover Elspeth, which can then branch into a "Reclaim Mirrodin" block

We're not likely to see a new one that soon, since they are all in on the Gatewatch thing for the time being. They'll eventually move past it, though, just like they did with the Weatherlight Saga. I'd really like them explore a little more on using more planeswalkers, rather than repeating the same ones. I always thought it was weird that they turned the Elf tribal planeswalker into a ramp and man-land planeswalker. I was happy to see a second Nissa, but now that there are six, I'm not very excited for the seventh. It's the same with every repeato-walker. I always liked Chandra, but there are eight of them now. I don't see much need to ever make another one. I would be much more interested to see one-time planeswalkers return: there's no reason we couldn't get a mono green Vraska, for example.

Tamyio is mono-blue really. She was put into bat colors for developmental reasons and when we get another card for her, chances are it will be mono-blue.
I would be much more interested to see one-time planeswalkers return: there's no reason we couldn't get a mono green Vraska, for example.
The issues there is the duel-colored walkers like Ral or Vraska where made very duel colored feeling and dropping a color (unless something extreme happens) doesn't seem likely.
@5colors
Just to be clear on my position, I would LOVE to see more mono-colored walkers in the future (mainly because I'm so fed up with the same characters shown over and over again... It has been 9 years sine most of the gatewatch characters were introduced and had their plots going, twice as long as the weatherlight crew), even just for variety if nothing else.
Err not really, before the gatewatch Jace had been the main character for one block and a novel and secondary character in zendikar, Chandra had a novel and a minor players in Zendikar, Liliana had Innistrad, Gideon had focus in a novel and was minor character in both Zendikar and Ravnica 2 and Nissa was literally only seen during Zendikar. Yes Jace, Liliana and Chandra where used in corsets but they had literally zero and where used just to be faces of their colors.
As for Elspeth, for as much as I liked her, if she is going to be resurrected and return as a walker I'm expecting to see her as a WB walker for the same reason Sarkhan was depicted as URG at the end of the Tarkir block: "she has been dead so this allows her to attune to the color of necromancy".
While that is plausible I'd wait and see first. Also Sarkahn shouldn't be taken as an example for color shift. Development changed his colors, design had him in Jund before devilment stepped in.
I think we will see a few mono-colored walkers to fill in when the block needs one and they don't want/storyline reason can't use a member of the gate watch, like Ob was the black walkers for BFZ.
All depends on how far they want to keep this power rangers thing going. I mean, they had 2 occasions tyo have blocks without the whole of the gatewatch falling in and in both cases at the end all fo the gatewatch joined in because htye are the heroes. I'm not really seeing a block without all the power rangers anytime soon.[/quote]
I ment as cards. Nissa got a card in Kaladesh by default since none of the walkers they set for the story where green (except Ajani but I see him being Tamyio and being three colored).
And I'm sorry but it would have been very dumb if Jace had tried to take Emrakul alone and didn't bring the rest of the gatewatch. And while I don't think they all needed to go to Kaladesh, the fact that Tezzeret was around is justifiable enough for Liliana and Jace want back up, especially if Bolas has his claws in Kaladesh.
Too many Planeswalkers, period.^^
Just joking, I disagree about Nissa being omnipresent, she's not magical Jace (always finding a way to put him in every scenario possible and making him the hero, forgetting everything about third-parties like Nahiri/Sorin/Tamiyo, or Kiora/Ob Nixilis...)
Lol yeah Jace is alway shown to be the hero and not a very lucky nerdy mage.
Yet, part of the problem with Nissa is, unlike Ajani, she still had that "pure-green" identity, which makes her bland.
She did have some interesting stories before the retcon from BFZ though, but i guess writers deemed her "too complicated" for us, lowly players^^
Talk to Jay13x about this
Back to the topic, if there is a new mono-green walker , i'd like to have something akin to Titania, sort of elemental thing linked with lands, but in a better way than only "animating a land" Titania, Protector of Argoth planeswalker-shifted, could be very nice indeed
Nissa is the lands planeswalker.

What green theme would you want to explore? Personally, I'd like to see a green PW themed around Snakes, though I could just as easily see such a PW being BG, GU, or flat-out Sultai. Insect tribal would be neat too, maybe as a BG or Abzan theme.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I would like to see a green walker that has something like
+1: give up to one target creature +3+3 until your next turn
-3: search your library for a land and put it into play.
-7: destroy all other non creature non land permanents. Then each creature you control fights up to one creature an opponent controls
This would explore the basic identity of what green can do to truly impact a game. a +1 that negates new Liliana and Dovin's +'s. A - that is actual ramp. and an ultimate that is essentially a green wrath that returns the board to a primal jungle type feel. I think that would be neat.
+2: Creatures you control gain trample and reach until the end of turn
+1: Target creature gains +3/+3 until end of turn
-4: You get an emblem that says, ""Until end of turn" and "this turn" effects don't end."
-4: You get an emblem that says, ""Until end of turn" and "this turn" effects don't end."
is super busted. I made a couple of custom cards for my commander group, and that text was on one of them. It sounds strong but not overpowered, but then you have cards like silence and Angel's Grace.
On topic, this trend is only going to continue, from what I understand. The current gatewatch roster are the mono color faces from here on. I seem to remember a quote from maro that said that Gideon is the mono W walker, and they want Ajani to be the GW one, so I imagine that we'll start seeing more walkers join the gatewatch with different color combos.
So depending on how they want to manage their character arcs and exploration changes how much room they need for monocolor walkers to print.
As it stands, right now, they don't need more than 2 in any given color.
- The Gatewatch Members
- Someone who covers room mechanically separate from Gatewatch members to fill the gaps.
If they do intend to represent walkers as characters through cards, some effects would be outside of each individual walker's ability set and need a different character to use them. Ajani being 'lifegain,' Elspeth being 'weenies,' and Gideon being 'punch 'em in the nose' as the three variations on White walkers. In all sets the whole Gatewatch will make an appearance (storywise, and for now) so it's a matter of mechanical diversity in the block/set that would decide if they need someone new at monocolor.
At Two color it's about new blood in the game (as a whole) or someone to represent the block (as a theme) that determines who shows up in two color. If characters are 'on ice' like Venser (Dead), Sorin (Stoned), Elspeth ('Dead') then a new character can be pulled to fill their slot, but needing a lot of different walkers in the same color pair/trio isn't important unless their skill pool is more defined. Dovin is our 'stop having fun' walker and Narset is our 'learn all the things' walker, but both share WU.
...Provided Dovin survives, anyway.
