We've now gotten wedge, shard, monocolor, enemy, and now four-color commanders. So what's next?
The easiest, and most obvious, route is allied colors. But beyond that, the only thing they have left would be colorless and five-color, neither of which seem likely.
If they go back to Planeswalkers as Commanders again, that opens up a lot more possibilities, as Allied, Enemy, Wedge, Shard, and four-color planeswalker commanders are available. If I'm not mistaken, though, planeswalker commanders weren't all that popular.
Could we see a return to wedges or shards, this time with Partner legends? Hybrid cost commanders?
I've thought of a way for a cycle of WUBRG legends to work: The General Tazri method. A cycle of monocolor legends each featuring a WUBRG ability that allows them to serve as either monocolor or fivecolor commanders. Tribal legends would be popular, allowing for tribes such as Merfolk, Goblins, and Elves to finally play their own five-color decks. We could also see a variety of five-color themes such as Slivers, Changelings, Domain, Sunburst, and Converge.
Ally-color decks are another likely direction, since we saw enemy-color decks in 2015. One option would be Ally hybrid legends similar to Wort, Boggart Auntie and Rhys the Redeemed, though I would sooner expect those to be secondary commanders. Ally experience would go over well I'm sure, but we don't know how eager R&D is to repeat themselves just yet.
A potential twist just ocurred to me: What if they printed other noncreature cards that can occupy your commander slot? Like, instead of a legendary creature you can play a legendary enchantment? Or a legendary artifact? But again, that feels more like a secondary commander option.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. Stop doing this.
What? How would that be done? An "oloro-like" continious effect while in the command zone as they could not be casted? To make a cicle of those would mean terrible balancing issues.

it was half-joke half-serious, as it feels a bit, that wizards are doing thingsa just for the sake of it.
look at previous commander products for example.
it is not that bad, there just seems to be a tendency to force new things, instead of bringing back old, but working good stuff.
for example, the new partner mechanic is nice, but you end up with 2 weak commanders, and sometimes the decks they are in seem completely out of place (for example Bronson in the grixis-white deck)
Commanders with non-mana costs could be an interesting twist. Like "sac 2 + x creatures to cast this general where X is the number of times you cast him". I wouldn't want to be the person to balance something like that but i am sure it could be done.
Suspend is an other way to shake it up.
Non-Creature generals like the new Skyship things could be a way to go as well. They did it with walkers so i don't see a big issue with a legendary vehicle.
The only two options I see without repeating themselves or stretching the idea too much is Allied Colors and Misc, something like
-A 5 color commander
-A 3 color commander
-A 2 color commander
-A monocolor commander
-A colorless commander
This way they can do 5 color and colorless without making too many similar decks for the sake of simetry. It is also a cool place for more Commander Planeswalkers. Like 5 colors with Urza, 3 colors with Naya Ajani, monocolor Serra...
They might end up doin wedges again at some point. The first time they did it Tarkir didn't exist, so there's plenty of space for making the decks quite different from the first iteration. Monocolor is another theme that can easily be done without feeling too much repetitive
I've thought of a way for a cycle of WUBRG legends to work: The General Tazri method. A cycle of monocolor legends each featuring a WUBRG ability that allows them to serve as either monocolor or fivecolor commanders.
I really admire this idea. I prefer just straight-up mono-color legends personally, but I think this is a wonderful compromise of both when 5-color is to be done. I do suspect the next step will be ally colors, which I welcome. I'd love some new UW Legends.
They will probably go to allied colors but use it as an opportunity to introduce some new mechanic or gimmick. A R/G werewolf tribal deck would be a very good selling point for Commander 2017. They should make a new Werewolf commander that actually gives a buff to werewolves.
I would love to see some tribal support for some lesser-profile tribal (2015's Kaseto was a nice Snake tribal inclusion). However, it's more likely that they would focus on big tribes, such as Elves and Goblins.
How cool would it be to see a ridiculously sweet legendary Aven tribal lord? Faeries? Minotaurs? Centaurs or Treefolk? Etc?

Birds got Derevi, who hits their three main colors and rewards you for having a bunch of them. Treefolk have Doran. Centaurs have... Stonebrow, Krosan Hero? IDK.
I will say, they missed their chance to add even minor tribal support to some suffering tribes this last go around. Warriors, for example, has tribal cards in WBRG, and yet the WBRG legend is a soldier (despite looking like a warrior), and while there is a BG Warrior with Partner, neither of the WR legends are warriors to go with it.
Likewise, Minotaurs really wants to be in WRUB to hit the RB minotaur tribal from Theros plus the older WRU minotaurs + Zedruu, yet none of the partner legends nor the 4c legend are minotaurs.

We need an Elephant legend. I'd be happy with a GW legend, but somebody somewhere will want to play their Avalanche Tusker in an Elephant tribal deck.
I'd also like to see a BR Ogre legend. Yidris is a cool card (and as a bonus you can play those Gruul and Grixis Ogres in addition to the black and red), but just like not every player wants Scion of the Ur-Dragon to be their Dragon commander, so too will Ogre fans want a more color-focused legend.

Colorless Eldrazi: (this would include some cards with in the mana cost), no eldrazi that are just devoid though, it would still have some artifacts, especially for ramp purposes, but the focus would be on eldrazi over artifacts, most of it's new cards would be eldrazi. Probably all the new cards unique to this deck would have in the mana cost.
Colorless Artifacts: This would instead involve artifact creatures and artifacts in general, it might have some other colorless spells and a few odd eldrazi, but it probably would not have spells that have in the mana cost. To help make up for all the artifacts (that produce extra targets for hate-cards against artifacts) it would probably have some original protective cards that help protect artifacts among the unique cards in it.
5 color Sliver/Tribal: This would have 2 legendary 5 color slivers (one new, one old) as general options, as well as a 5 color shapeshifter of some sort that can serve as a generic tribal substitute for any tribe, which lets you pick a tribe when the game starts or when it ETBs and grant bonuses for that tribe in some way, as well as count as a member of that tribe, this generic general would have a mana cost of in order to allow for it to fit into decks that aren't exactly 5 colors in design. Deck would include Cavern of Souls, Mutavault and other generic tribal type cards to support other tribes if it is taken apart and used to build another tribal commander deck.
They will never make a Minotaur tribal deck, because Didgeridoo is on the reserved list for some reason and cannot be reprinted, and without it the deck is just a hollow shell.
I would love another released based around monocolour, and giving a real incentive to play it over 4c and 3c goodstuff.
Could be some high coloured cost high impact cards that are just impractical to run in multi, or cards that get weaker based on the number of colours used to cast them (as opposed to sunburst or whatever it was called).
Or special lands. Super Mountain, taps for RR if you control 4+ mountains, taps for R if you control 1+ mountains, taps for (1) if you control no mountains.
I would like to see some sort of Familiars, wherein you can have some low power creatures, coloured equipment (which could also be cool as and of themselves) etc in the command zone with your commander. Again incentivised in some fashion for mono because my god there is just no reason to do that atm.

EDH RRGrenzo plays your deck, GGYeva's mono green control, WW9-tails trys desperately for monowhite not to suck RWBUTymna and Kraum's saboteur tribal, UWG Kestia's Enchantress Aggro, RUB Jeleva casts big dumb spells, RGB Vaevictis' big critters can kill your critters hard
Right now the only things that haven't been done is 2 color allied decks, 5 color decks, and colorless decks.
It wouldn't surprise me that the next release is 2 colors, to do something easy after 4 colors. After that it is up to WoTC to find a balance of how to do 5 colors/colorless if they do it at the same time, if at all. If they did 5 colors I would certainly hope that one would be slivers and then colorless could be Eldrazi and another be plain artifacts.
I've been thinking for a while that they may do a Commander booster set (Commander Masters, but with $4 packs), much in the same vein as Conspiracy (just not the conspiracy cards). They could still introduce new cards and reprint plenty that need more than just one printing in one deck to bring the price of them down, since Commander is mainly the reason many of our favorite cards are so pricey or have gone up.
I think Allied colors is the next logical step, but beyond that I think I'd like to see them take another crack at Planeswalker Commanders. There are a ton of lore-significant characters to use, and lots of potential, in my mind.
Aside from all the Devotion cards that reward you for playing monocolor, that is. And maybe you just want to play a Kemba or Krenko commander deck and are willing to accept the weaknesses of playing monocolor in exchange for always being able to cast your Cat or Goblin engine? Despite what you say, monocolor commander decks are pretty popular. It helps that artifacts help cover each color's weaknesses without rendering multicolor obsolete.

WOTC would need to change the rules for Suspend for this to be done. Currently you can only suspend a card from your hand not the command zone.
There are also a couple of issues with it potentially being a way around the commander tax. It would not get added on when you activate the suspend ability and as the commander then gets cast from the exile zone it would not be taxed and would not count if it was then subsequently cast from the command zone.

Yah it would be needed to be tweaked for sure. I doubt they would go that way but its an example of "other ways to put things into play".
I would like to see some tribal stuff going into commander. Maybe even as a secondary general in the decks.
I'm not sure that the five-deck paradigm is sustainable without becoming repetitive, so I'd like to see Wizards begin experimenting with different Commander products. A booster set with one card slot in every pack reserved for old and new legendary creatures could be interesting (and would still be draftable, just not as typical Commander decks).

I think the logical choice is allied pairs next year, and five color the next.
The 4-color decks are a nice change, because there is so much good you can cram into a single deck when you can work with 4 colors, as opposed to 2 or 1 in recent years. Doing 5C next year would be counterproductive in that regard.
So next year a rather less crazy set, and the really crazy ones to follow.

People honestly think that Wizards will release five different five-colour decks in a year. Like, this is actually a thing that people seriously think could happen? That it makes even the slightest lick of sense to have a WUBRG deck in any tribe besides Slivers and Allies? There's a difference between doing something because it's a good idea and doing it because you haven't done it yet. There is absolutely no good reason to do this, it is completely unnecessary.
No, it's more likely that once they have done ally-colour decks they will either start going through colour themes that have already been done or they will start releasing Commander products based on playstyle themes rather than colours. A series of tribal decks (that don't have silly pointless mono-colour Commanders with WUBRG abilities) would make sense, and they don't necessarily need to balance the colours out among 5 products in a year.
The easiest, and most obvious, route is allied colors. But beyond that, the only thing they have left would be colorless and five-color, neither of which seem likely.

Might have Horde of Notions as a commander reprint option in order to take advantage of the Maze multi-color aiding booster elemental creatures.
5 color good-stuff: Rather than focus on synergies, this deck focuses on power and versatility, it grabs powerful stuff from all 5 colors. It would have lots of multi-color charms and commands, as well as single color bomby things like Rune-Scarred Demon, Sun Titan, Jace's Mindseeker, Molten Primordial, and Avenger of Zendikar. Reprint commander would probably be Progenitus. Deck would do a lot of powerful, efficient and/or interesting multi-color cards, such as play cards like Terminate, Sphinx's Revelation, Voidslime, Duneblast, Anguished Unmaking, etc.
