Ok so this is some cryptic deciphering but let's say that the aether born are souls are "reincarnated" in aether and the fisle out and die. what if a planeswalker died and became reincarnated in an aether born. the spark might be enough to keep them stablized and not deteriorate. that could mean ashiok is said stablized planeswalker. I think that he is the unknown force that is being hinted at. perhaps the aether born are getting tired of aether being abused by the inhabitants of kaladesh. ashiok would be perfect as the planeswalker card reprinted in the next set. there are some hints that have been divulged.
1. mark rosewater said that ashiok might be aether born when questioned. if aether born are kaladesh's reincarnated inhabitants this would make sense since he could have at one point been human.
2. the spoiled legendary Gondi card is suspiciously reminiscent of ashiok in abilities.
3. the Wizards website describes ashiok as a "dark engineer" it would make sense that he came from a plane of engineers
I think ashiok will be a black planeswalker in the next set and we will see him causing mayhem in perhaps his native plane. it would also make sense that since kaladesh's is about hopes and dreams aether revolt would be about chaos and nightmares. what does everyone think?
Firstly, Ashiok is confirmed non-Aetherborn.
Secondly, the Aether aren't abused by the Kaladeshi. They are the patrons of the arts and sciences, and seem to be very highly respected.
Thirdly, Gonti's abilities have shown up on multiple cards, most recently Grenzo, Havoc Raiser. It's not a particularly new ability, and Gonti's version of it is honestly flavored more like Grenzo's than Ashiok's. Grenzo and Gonti are both taking your things because they are yours and they feel they'd be better suited in their hands. Ashiok is rifling through your brain for a nightmare, the nightmare of your own things turned against you, and then bringing that to life.
Fourthly, at last check, Ashiok was still on Theros, still in the underworld, working with a plane that really boosts his own magic, because Theros is a plane of Actual Dreams.
And finally, the revolt is almost guaranteed to be against the consulate, led in part by Chandra (see key art), and is definitely explosive enough to not fit any of Ashiok's known style. A big chaotic battle not brought on by the manipulation of fear and hatred is much too crass for Ashiok.
