Well, if they want to use a mechanic similar to Board, they could make it independent from any subtype, so instead of an Artifact - Transport Ship you could simply have an Artifact - Ship. Then if they come up with a different vehicle mechanic, like a tweak of Champion, they can coexist.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I have no idea how Vehicles can work when you attack with some (but not all) creatures riding a vehicle but block with other creatures riding the same vehicle.
It's quite simple. Let's say you have four creatures on a ship. Two of those creatures attack your opponent, while the other two stand by to protect you. The ship sails in to attacking range so your attackers can get theirs in, then sails back so the remaining creatures can protect you. Vehicles can be used to protect as well as attack, and riding a vehicle doesn't mean your creatures don't expend energy to attack.

I repeat what I said initially when this come out. I can see the vehicle mechanic as something akin to Llanowar Behemoth.
Ghirapur Wind Chariot 3
Artifact-Vehicle
Ride (Tap an untapped creature you control. You can choose not to untap it during your untap step. That creature rides Ghirapur Wind Chariot as long as it is tapped)
As long as Ghirapur Wind Chariot is ridden, it is 4/4 artifact creature with flying.
The numbers are off, but you get the idea...
Well....
Not exactly what I said, but I HAVE to beat my own drum and say I was friggin' close

Except they already do have it in the form of Dragons and in red's case Phoenixes. Not to mention several Equipment that grant flying already exist. And if a Transport granting flying is really such a big deal, then don't make a Transport that grants flying (though that's a terrible loss of a resonant trope).
The comment on Choking Restraints does make me wonder though if there's merit to the theories about vehicles being artifacts that can do stuff as long as a creature is riding them. Of course, Kaladesh was still in design when these comments were made, so it's possible the vehicle mechanic has undergone some changes since the time of that comment.
Red is tertiary in flying.
Anyway, Vehicles are in, but they are not Mechanic E.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
The Artifact Sub-type does not feel deserve to be known as "Vehicle" since it acts more like a "Machine", "Device", "Gadget" or "Engine" could be better with a "Operator" as a trigger cost for activating than the word "Crew". It doesn't feel like it's namesake subtype or what it should had been, It just like another artifact that requires a tapped creature to become another creature? unlike the design of Planeswalkers, Equipments and Aura.
It's never as good like the equipment because it lacks of "bonus" factor like creature stealth or buff/power-up ability while it also suffers from summoning sickness. It would had been better if a Vehicle would be destroyed during combat phase then the assigned "Crew" would be replace the Vehicle on combat state or be made something near as good with Soulbond, Banding or Ninjutsu..
I hope this sub type would never be a permanent to MTG and be replace with something better...
On the other hand this ideas could have been better
They can even do something like MECHA as an expansion for a Machine like Equipment to living weapons.
On the other hand, vehicles could just be medium to big regular creatures that are "piloted" by lesser creatures. For example:
Cruising Air Barge 5
Artifact Creature - Vehicle
Flying
When this creature dies, create 3 1/1 (color) Human creature tokens.
2/4
My idea calls them Transports and inverts the Creature-Equipment dynamic:
Board -cost- (-cost-: Target creature you control boards this Transport. Board only as a sorcery.)
Transports apply their bonus to every creature aboard the Transport, similar to a local enchantment. In this regard, they do work similar to Equipment, but where you can attach multiple Equipment to a single creature, multiple creatures can board a single Transport.
While I'm flattered that you consider my Transport idea superior, I want to give their take on Vehicles a chance. Both concepts have good design space to explore.
