Hi, I'm usually just a Rumor Mill reader and I rarely post there, and in Speculation even less, but it's been a few weeks that I have an idea. I tried to search previous threads for it and I found nothing, much to my surprise as it's kind of something obvious to me. What lead me to post here is that today on Blogatog the discussion about "mechanic E" that has been going on recently has intensified, and not by chance in my opinion. Examples here, here (a post that also conveniently denies contraptions in KLD one more time, so "mechanic E" can't be contraptions), and here (with an also convenient link to the article where we learned of "mechanic E" for the first time). For those that might not know, "mechanic E" is a mechanic they tried for the original Mirrodin block but didn't make it to print. Maro referred to it multiple times afterwards, hinting that they were trying to find a home for it.
Then there is also the "vehicle" mechanic originally mentioned and then quickly removed from a Latest Developments article, which has been mentioned here for example.
What I am speculating, and I'm fairly certain about it at this point, is that those two are actually the same thing. In other words, "vehicles" are "mechanic E" and they are in Kaladesh. They are also what Maro refers to when he says that in Kaladesh there is one mechanic they've been trying to make for years.
I know that this is not the Custom Card Creation forum (which I actually know quite well as that is actually where I usually post), so I'm not looking for custom designs for this mechanic. What I am asking here is: is there anything else we know about how this mechanic might work? If so, what does it do in general terms? (Again, I'm not asking for custom designs.)
I know that the panels at PAX will answer this in two weeks, but I can't wait for them to pass and the answer to come!

• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index.Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
That one official reference to vehicles that got removed basically confirms them,
so this theory seems quite likely.
Also, Mechanic E couldn't be contraptions—
Maro has said contraptions started as a joke in Future Sight
(though he has since said he would like to make them actually work).
I'm just curious how vehicles would differ from equipment,
but I'm guessing they figured out a way.

I see no logical mechanical difference between how "Vehicles" and Equipment would work.
Vehicles can drive from one side of the battlefield to another?
Vehicles must be destroyed before the creature driving them can be damaged?
Walls can't use vehicles?
I see no logical mechanical difference between how "Vehicles" and Equipment would work.
My idea calls them Transports and inverts the Creature-Equipment dynamic:
Board -cost- (-cost-: Target creature you control boards this Transport. Board only as a sorcery.)
Transports apply their bonus to every creature aboard the Transport, similar to a local enchantment. In this regard, they do work similar to Equipment, but where you can attach multiple Equipment to a single creature, multiple creatures can board a single Transport.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. The mechanic is as good as the cards it's printed on.
If the vehicle enhances the riders significantly, it's not a bad mechanic.
Obviously, Wither for example is a worse infect, or, from another point of view, Infect is a more powerful Wither. But it is still just banding but on a separate card rather than on a creature, and you don't get to distribute the damage how you want. That of course does not make it a less interesting mechanic, I was mostly just wondering if I read it right.
(I miss Banding, it had so much potential, but it never had a chance to truly shine.)

I had this idea too, as I noticed that the reminder text for equipment allows for it:
Equipment: ({3}: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)
To make this "multi-equip", you only have to change it to this:
"Multi-equip" ({3}: Attach target creature you control to this card. Multi-Equip only as a sorcery.)
Because of Equip's wording, the equip card moves around, implicitly disconnecting from the former creature. Multi-Equip moves the creatures around, without an implicit disconnect.
I'm not sure this is mechanic E though; it doesn't seem that complex, so I'm not sure why it took so long.

It doesn't fit the flavor of Esper either, a shard it was the mechanic for, for a while. The thing with Mechanic E though is not that it didn't work, but rather than other things "crowded it out" due to the needs of the set.

Maybe just something like the Tesla autopilot you know. Artifacts that can do stuff on their own or that you can manually control. Who knows.
Or Something you can fuel with cards from your hand or graveyard for some special effects.
Or imagine this (templating sucks but you get the gist)
Pyrotank - 4/4 defender - Rare
Pilot 2: Pay 2, exile target creature you control, Pyrotank becomes piloted and gets +1/+1 and loses defender. If Pyrotank leaves the battlefield, return its pilot to he battlefield. You can pay 2 anytimetime you can cast a sorcery to return the creature exiled with Pyrotank's ability to the battlefield and Pyrotank is not piloted anymore.
Whenever Pyrotank attacks, if it's piloted by a Dwarf, it deals 2 damage to up to one target creature defending player controls.
There are going to be some hilarious flavor if this vehicle mechanic works similarly as other Equipment. For example, Emrakul would be able to ride a ground vehicle. Obviously, we had hilarious flavor with Equipment, but vehicles are going to push this dissonance further.
So.... A "fixed" and worse banding in other words?
Not really, no. Transports don't require all creatures to attack in tandem, some of them don't even grant combat-relevant abilities. Transports are basically Equipment you can attach to multiple creatures in exchange for only being able to attach one to a given creature at a time. But it's more accurate to say you attach creatures to the Transport.
And I would argue that Transports being easier to understand than Banding already makes them better.
The mechanic is as good as the cards it's printed on.
If the vehicle enhances the riders significantly, it's not a bad mechanic.
The general idea is stuff like "Each creature aboard ~ gets +1/+1" or "each creature aboard ~ has flying". Given the complexity and potential swinginess of Transports, it wouldn't be something you'd see at common very often.
Just because Kaladesh is heavily hinted to feature vehicles of some kind doesn't mean the vehicle mechanic is Mechanic E, but seeing as Mirrodin block had cards like Auriok Siege Sled and Goblin Dirigible, it seems like the kind of concept they would have tried out, perhaps in Darksteel to follow up on Mirrodin's introduction of Equipment.

If we do get the "Vehicle" mechanic I hope it is instead just called "Mount" so we have creatures that can be equipped to other creatures, to which then normal equip rules apply and the mount can't attack. At that point they basically act like any other equipment, giving bonuses, but a little easier to kill. Having whatever the name is of course allows them to count as an equipment, but not part of their types, that way you don't run into "Horse Mount" as a creature type. I think using a less mechanical sounding term for it would be better int the long run, that way they can use it for other sets if the need arises.
I repeat what I said initially when this come out. I can see the vehicle mechanic as something akin to Llanowar Behemoth.
Ghirapur Wind Chariot 3
Artifact-Vehicle
Ride (Tap an untapped creature you control. You can choose not to untap it during your untap step. That creature rides Ghirapur Wind Chariot as long as it is tapped)

But the E Mechanic comes from the use of the letter "E". So it has to be either a new symbol or a new frame code or something else that requires the use of a single letter in the design process. How would the vehicle/ride mechanic fit with that?

So, a worse banding that takes all the benefits of banding away from the mechanic making it utterly pointless.

It's not supposed to be doing the same job as banding, no more so than Levitation or Fervor. I fail to see what banding has anything to do with Transports. Transports are a tweak on Equipment that lets you apply a particular effect to multiple creatures. Not all Transports are even combat related; you can apply utility effects like looting and lifegain, just the same as with Equipment. Why are you even comparing Transports to banding to begin with?

Regular metal filigree, which has shown up on multiple planes, including Mirrodin (Caged Sun)
So, a worse banding that takes all the benefits of banding away from the mechanic making it utterly pointless.

This is also a point I forgot to mention in the OP, and it's very important. I don't think anything that has been proposed so far (that I've read here or elsewhere) fits with that.

• The two public custom sets I've been part a part of the design team for:
"Brotherhood of Ormos" - Blog post with all info - set thread - design skeleton / card list || "Extinctia: Homo Evanuit" - Blog post with all info - set thread - card list spreadsheet
• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index. Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
