The signs are pointing straight at the Stromkirk's deity for the culprit of what's going wrong on Innistrad.
If that's true, then it raises a couple of questions:
1. Why now? Dagon/Cthulhu/Marit Lage has most likely been in Innistrad for a very long time. We know that because of Runo's role as high priest of the sea god.
2. Why is it disturbing the plane? Could it be that the new balance brought by Avacyn is affecting it somehow?
Shadows Over Innistrad seems to imply that this new threat is something from outside the plane. Therefore, and trying to unify both theories put forward in this thread, maybe the distortions are caused by Emrakul's arrival and not by Stromkirk's god, who lies dreaming either in the moon or in the sea.

Well, up till now, there wasn't a crazy unknown force shoving vampires into solid stone walls and making an open attack on them beyond anything Avacyn originally did.

But Nahiri hasn't done anything to the plane itself yet, has she? Perhaps it's her use of the cryptoliths that is disturbing Marit Lage's sleep?

What I meant was: There's a big force clearly going after vampires, now might be the time for said vampire worshipers of an ancient sea monster thing to try and summon it for protection.
We don't yet know if the cryptoliths are from Nahiri, or someone else.
The spoiled Thraben Investigator is holding and standing near a growth that looks like it could be the corruption of Emrakul. As opposed to Ulamog and Kozilek's direct wastes, Em's could be more of a mossy, organic blight that eats away at the world. Just my initial thoughts/reaction.

Agreed. This looks A LOT like Emrakul's brood and what her corruption might look like.
Well, also notice that the Cryptoliths look a lot like the 'Heron in the Moon', I have a feeling Nahiri is calling/releasing something that was already on Innistrad. Just the Wind has all sorts of eyes on it that it shouldn't, and that's not really an Eldrazi thing, I'm thinking it's something new.
Apparently Doug answered a question about Marit Lage almost two years ago (and R&D usually works 2 years in the future)
So this is something very dear to my heart and something I've been holding out for for a long time. I'm going to keep asking till I get an answer! D: What's the status of Marit Lage, and could we ever see her again? Talk about an -awesome- villain that hasn't had any chance to shine! How do you feel about her?
She’s intriguing, isn’t she? A mysterious villain so powerful that she had to be imprisoned deep under the ice. Reportedly not a planeswalker, yet seemingly able to appear on different planes somehow. Able to motivate her followers to do her bidding, even while she slumbers.
I certainly like her as a character – there’s definitely potential there. It’s just a matter of whether the story goals of any future blocks would make sense of having her appear again.

And it never made more sense than now. I don't want to get way too hyped about it but they have more reason than they'll ever need to bring her back.

Those deformations in Incorrigible Youths don't seem match that kind of distortions that the Eldrazi bring with them, even Emrakul, who is said to twist lifeforms. Unless it's an Innistradi-inspired version of what her presence does to creatures I'm betting on something new too.
Marit Lage nor Emmy really have an affinity towards sprouting eyeballs, so I think whatever the threat on Innistrad is right now, it's something new. It's probably in/related to the moon, and the tides are just effected by the moon so people would see the changes in the tide, not knowing their cause (the moon).
I think Trapped in Ice is as close to Lage as we're going to see in this set, unfortunately.

True, and I'm not getting my hopes up but if you look at the art on Dark Depths and the Marit Lage token, she does have a few extra eyes. If it's indeed her doing, maybe she's slowly infecting the plane, making people grow extra eyes and tentacles.
I am really leaning towards Marit Lage right now, did anyone notice the flavor text on the clue tokens revealed today? as I recall those who worshiped her were the Brine Shaman, which would lean more toward the old Sea god that the vampires worshiped and since Innistrad being a plane who's soul is black aligned, having a large eldritch black avatar resting in the sea.
Nahri messing with the planes mana is causing Innistrad's deep dark secret that is resting to awaken and mess with the plane in a multiple of ways, in a way to destroy it, to cause plane wide destruction the same that happened to Zendikar. It was said that Marit Lage's dreams could effect reality, so what about her will?
We know Nahiri is around and hella angry... There was something about Innistrad knowing Zendikar's suffering or some such... I could entirely believe her effectively summoning Emrakul to Innistrad for revenge...
^ this, Nahri built the hedrons to direct the leylines on Zendikar (if I remember correctly) to attract the Eldrazi by amplifying the existing mana & she's messing with the moon and building giant pillars of bodies. Would it be far fetched to say she is using Innistrad as a lure for the Eldrazi? whether or not Emrakul shows up, her purpose in creating the pillars/using the moon could be a signal to Sorin that she will make Innistrad the next victim and the madness is a by product of her messing with the moon, a symbol of Avacyn as well as the monsters?

If not a hint, it's at least a tip of the hat.
Indeed. Particularly since the same combo (Vampire Hexmage) flips it. (Sort of... you still need to cast an Instant/Sorcery.)
Commander: WUBRG Superfriends, GW Rhys Tokens, WUBRG Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Kitchen Table (now that's real Magic): WUBRG Domain, GU Biovisionary, UB Korlash Grandeur, UW Merfolk Mill
Looks like to be a Land, Marit Lage might be a thing Oo

You can see how artifacts are in the 1st checklist, it's different from this one.

Whether she's in this block or not, it is undoubtedly inspired by Marit Lage.

At least Thing In The Ice is a nice nod at Marit Lage and also possibly at Wrath Of Marit Lage (8ed)!
