To circumvent 5th color missing problems they could instead make allied colored legends with an hybrid enemy colored activated abbility. So flavorwise they behave more like a 3-colored legend.
Actually a very good idea would be make decks allied colours to tacle the mana base and easy mode for new players to the format, but make the 2 new Legendaries they always release with hybrid mana symbols in their casting cost, so they could become 4 colour commander enablers.
This would make a big impact since those commanders could be highly tuneable and make the player decide to build around 4,3 or 2 colours.
(A Selesnya deck and a general with in it's casting cost for example)
Honestly, when someone said the idea of an allied color general with an enemy colored activated ability, it made perfect sense. That way a UB general with a activated ability could be like a UBR commander, a WUB commander or a WUBR commander. Or, if you don't want to use the activated ability, it could be a UB commander.
They seem to have realized this as of the Fate Reforged Khans-
hopefully they'll use that sort of design space more in the future.

While DFCs aren't likely to make their way into a precon product, ally color legends that transform into planeswalkers Origins-style would be neat.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
New Emrakul could be WUBRG devoid.. Maybe WUBRGx2 like Progenitus. Then we could have a 5 "color" eldrazi commander deck. Let's be honest, it would still be less hated on than slivers.

that was also a year and a half ago. Not saying it has changed, but merely speculating on what could be. I'd enjoy seeing the DFC commanders (if it is no longer cost-prohibitative) because I really want a legendary werewolf

I would love to see them tackling 4 colors. As people already said, however, 4 color Commanders are pretty hard to design, and it's the classical "design challenge". If they ever do it (and I'm sure they will), I hope they do a full-fledged 4 color commander and a secondary, 4 color identity comander (akin to Tazri).
Five 5 color decks seems like a waste - as said before, 5 colors and 4 colors are too similar, so just do 5 4-colors and be done with it. If they ever do five colors, I hope they do something more exciting - something like say, 1 5-color deck, 1 true colorless C deck (akin to Eldrazi) and 1 Artifact deck.
To be honest revisiting wedges would be the most optimal - original Commander product was limited and thus not meeting the demand. Also, wedges have significantly less available commanders than shards.
My bet - 2016 will be the year of allied colors, and in 2017 wedges again.
I don't think you will ever see a 4/5 color commander precon. The mana base is too difficult to make work, if they did all of the lands would come into play tapped, it's supposed to be a product first and foremost to introduce people into the format and on top of that you would need to have 3 4 color legends per commander precon as all other precons come with 3 commander options. My guess is mono or wedge identities but I am leaning towards mono. 2014s product toyed with the planeswalker theme, they won't do that again. I expect them to go with a tribal mono coloured theme. Why? it's a viable strategy in commander and I have a feeling coat of arms will reprinted this year along with door of destinies. Tribal hasn't really been done properly yet.
I'd like to see Allied Colours myself, but I have a soft spot for Mono coloured decks as well. Plus Mono is the easiest way to teach a new Player the in's & out's, at least in my experience. Would love to see a colourless deck though - it would be very interesting to see what Wizard's would do with those slots.

I could see this year's "new" thing in commander being DFC commanders.
