So after I read the Chandra origin story on uncharted realms, I think wizards is going to make a steampunk themed set / clan when that plane is featured. Steamflogger boss might finally get reprinted and we can finally assemble contraptions! That card has been made fun of since it got printed and I've been waiting for the day he would be vindicated. What does everyone think?
If they print an entire set around it, it will have to have red, black and green. It's probably as good a place to see contraptions as any, which is to say, it's highly unlikely but I too have dreams.
They can print Steamflogger Boss and set with Riggers and Contraptions only if they print Cogs, Sprockets, and Widgets too. They can print a Legendary Creature named Bob, Elder Gurg (anagram of Rube Goldberg) for a potential EDH general for a Rigger-themed deck. They can do product tie-ins with Contraptions as erector sets or Lego models.
On a more serious note, I think that WotC may be open to Riggers/Contraptions if it made sense in the overall theme of the world they are building. It wouldn't have to be a huge part of the set either; 5-7 cards that make contraptions, 5-7 cards that use contraptions in some way, 2-3 cards that help or reward the use of contraptions, and 1-2 cards that can hose contraptions and I think you would make people very happy. The fact that its getting talked about at all by Maro on his blog and that he mentions that he's working on trying to make it happen leads me to believe we'll see it one day if it meets what creative wants.
The only reason why hey haven't done contraptions yet is that I think they are overthinking the issue. Contraptions need be no more complicated than Gold tokens from Gild in that they can just be another resource to be used or accumulated. Any rules baggage gets solved the same way they did for Emblems; contraptions and assemble will just get their own paragraph in the comp rules. I think the way they worded Steamflogger Boss actual saved them a lot of grief in actually trying to implement them because they aren't shoe-horned into a corner as to what they are.
I'm surprised people think the whole plane is about contraptions and White/Blue philosophy. The majority of the story was set in the city of Ghirapur, which is very WU, but there's a whole plane to the place. It's not like Ravnica where it is all one city. They clearly have places for Red (Chandra's parents are pretty red/blue themselves, and so they got the red from SOMEWHERE), there's Green (the villages, with their reliance on beasts, as well as the surrounding forests), and Black would be in there somewhere as well. The idea for Ghirapur is likely a steampunk retro of Delhi, and so the rest of the plane, if based on a steampunk India, is going to have the rest of the colors easily. I'd be very sad not to see this become a full-fledged world.
Kaladesh would definitely make for a good block setting. Just the city of Ghirapur itself doesn't have enough depth for all the colors but there is the rest of the plane as well, which leaves plenty of room for other cultures/factions that are in conflict with the Consuls and their totalitarian regime. A central theme of the setting could be artifice vs. "traditional" forms of magic.
A central theme of the setting could be artifice vs. "traditional" forms of magic.
I remember the antagonist of the story saying something about the ''primal chaotic nature'' that their society was trying to advance from, so yeah, R and G can easily fit, let alone in combination with other colors (UR and UG definitely exist).
What i would like to see more is colored artifacts as a theme and antithesis in the world such lawfull vs the rebellious side, inventors vs supporters of the ''old ways'' and a state of dynamic change from the first to the second set.
The Riggers would be a fun inclusion. I mean, wtf, there must be goblins in that world!
It's definitely a subversion from what I expected: A possible setting for an India block, based on the artwork. By the way, did anyone notice how some of the Consul soldiers and mages feature what looks like etherium on their bodies? I wonder if a certain Planeswalking Sphinx had anything to do with that...

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Yeah I sorta see it. I have to say after looking at all the artworks for the young versions of the planeswalkers in Origins, when I look at the young Nissa, see reminds me heavily of Tauriel from the Hobbit movies imo.
Anyone else notice how young Chandra in yesterday's Uncharted Realms article looks like Arya Starke?
and did anyone else notice that at some point she steps into the tardis? i know it's apposed to be a foundry, but that thing in the middle is totally the tardis console. it even has circular gallyfreian words at the top

Contraptions are never going to happen. At least, not in a black-bordered set.
EDIT: That sounded mean. I'm not gloating or anything, I just think that realistically, we shouldn't expect Contraptions to happen outside of a possible un-set.
Or supplementary set, where we get things like Vanguards, Planes, Phenomenons, Schemes, Conspiracies, etc.

That seems possible, especially if they do a sort of wackiness/humor focused supplemental product... perhaps in lieu of a true un-set?
I've been wondering for a while if they might do something like that. It seems like there's a lot of internal resistance to the idea of another un-set, and not without reason; they may not be as vocal online as un-fans, but a lot of players are turned off by the idea of a product where all the cards are silver-bordered and illegal in all formats. Something more like a humor-themed Conspiracy set, where most of the cards have black borders and include some enticing reprints, but which includes a subset of un-style silver border cards (kind of like the tournament-illegal card types you mentioned), might seem more commercially viable. I don't know if Mark Rosewater would settle for that though, he seems to have his heart set on another full un-set.
Contraptions???? YES! My magic prayers and pleads have been answered!

Your wish on the set has been granted, and the speculation market has Steamflogger Boss at roughly $5 already on TCGPlayer. Weird thing is, even if contraptions happen and Steamflogger Boss is reprinted there is no guarantee he'll be card you'll want to use with them (flavor / novelty aside).

I wondered if they would ever go full steampunk, or more advanced technology than swords and shields for an entire set.
Besides, the boss is broken. Assembling two contraptions instead of one is extremely good.
