From the Magic Origins preview at PAX East, we got our first look at young Gideon. He's dressed like an Akroan from Theros, and can even be seen holding a Heliod spear, like the Cleric tokens that the card Heliod creates.
During the slidehow, Doug Beyer was narrating: "We're going to be able to see how Gideon changed from being a young street tough to being a champion of justice and of the meek."
Well, if Theros block showed us anything, it's what a big bastard Heliod is. A future champion of justice couldn't have been serving a less just god. If young, naive Gideon was in his service, he has a lot of disillusionment ahead. I bet his turning point is figuring out just how petty, wrathful, and vindictive Heliod is, setting him on a permanent path towards dishing out justice, and that's what we'll see depicted on his double-faced card.
Thanks Caranthir. Those are pretty excellent arts, too.
No chance the fall of his comrades is due to injustice at Heliod's hands? I feel like the inclusion of his spear (which I assume is only bestowed on a few) is important.

That second picture from Caranthir of Gideon looks absolutely beautiful
The thumbnail for Liliana is now confirmed as her planeswalker art. So this is likely to be Gideon's? Certainly looks good enough, though it'll be a shame to crop so much of Bant out.

Anybody have any ideas why they went with Gideon over Ajani?
Ajani is my favourite planeswalker and I was a bit disappointed when I saw they were doing Gideon instead. Gideon's pretty sweet too though, so I'm still excited.
What about Nissa? I was more surprised than disappointed to see her instead of Garruk. Will Nissa be on Zendikar too?
Nissa is native to Zendikar, and her first card was from that block. Her printing in M15 depicts her as the "Worldwaker," showing her evolution beyond tribal-based magic to control of the land, and features the hedrons of Zendikar in the background. So she's still there and still fighting against the Eldrazi.

Shards of Alara is way before my time, and I still don't really know anything about that set. It makes a lot of sense since Gideon is going to be in the new Zendikar set though. Thanks for the info!

Another reason they chose her over Garruk, besides the obvious "being in Zendikar" thing is that we also know Garruk's back story.

His spark was ignited by a grief of his fallen comrades. His first planeswalk was to Bant.
Let this great clan rest in peace (2001-2011)

Well the story of Ajani's spark igniting was told back in Shards of Alara. Our first real Planeswalker origin story, really: http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/multiverse/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/feature2/1694
Also, Doug Beyer made a lot of references to the characters chosen being relevant to upcoming storylines. We already have Gideon confirmed as in (maybe as the main character?) of Battle for Zendikar: http://magic.wizards.com/en/content/battle-zendikar-card-set-archive-products-game-info
