Now that we got a taste of a REAL core set! 6 walkers, 5 new legends, awesome rares and cool new borders... Will the next years core set follow the same pattern? And can we expect better core sets from now on? Or was this to mitigate the changes. Like new text, borders, and the rarity fake thingy at the bottom..??
I doubt this set is going to be the new normal. It feels like M10 to me in that it is a revamp of the core set and makes it something people really want to open. It's probably pushed because of Aaron Forsythe's involvement (see M10). We'll see the cool factor taper off after this. It DOES seem like they're going to tie the core sets into Duels of the Planeswalkers so we will most likely see a story-focused core set from now on.
They definitely tried to pull the stops out for this one, probably because of the new border and the fact that 15 is somewhat of a milestone. The excitement and cool little details will inevitably taper off with the following core sets. Hopefully they'll significantly raise the power level to compensate. For all the neat features in M15, it's still pretty weak.
More gimmicks and "better" art to gloss over the power level. They've done pretty well, making people forget about the Titans. New players will be very happy indeed. Older players will be indifferent.

The tie-in to DotP gives the Core Set a story to build around and texture - Magic 20XX will probably continue to have themes and will push the presence of those themes with "Year of <Planeswalker>" going to be the thing for a while.
I expect this strategy to expand and add to the quality in the future.
The outside designer work seems like a once-in-a-lifetime gimmick to me though, and it brought fourth some of the most intriguing pieces of design. But there might very well be future gimmicks to come. The things are going they will use can be hit-and-miss, but at least they are experimenting, right?

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

I hope this set sells very well. I want to see this every year. Each year, the core sets serve to reprint 1 30 dollar card. Other then that, its completely useless and never worth even following the spoilers. This one, jesus, I took a shot every time a planeswalker was spoiled and im STILL wasted!

If it's popular, it's not once in a lifetime. Once upon a time planeswalkers were an experiment too, and they were only supposed to be printed every few blocks.

I agree in principle. Yet I think that the success of the designs is not inherently tied to inviting outside designers - it comes with the out-of-the-box ideas and powerful top-down designs that can probably be emulated as well.
Planeswalkers were an experiment, yes, but not a one-set gimmick either.

I can't wait for M20. The next set they probably change things up again, add or remove sticker things or borders, or do some other whatever lol. But yeah, I'd expect M16 to be an average core set and not an semi-automatic rifle.
I feel the same damn way! Every time a set comes out, I cant help but think to myself "I wish it were 5 years later, so that there were thousands of new magic cards! TODAY!"
I think people should at least for the announcement of a set before they start being disappointed about it. The complains start sooner and sooner these days. It's starting to remind me of elections.
