Lets not forget we also have Searing Blood, Flames of the Firebrand (yeah it kinda sucks) and Annihilating Fire which wasnt too bad before Anger of the Gods came in Standard now but yeah Id like to see more good burn that is less splashable. Something like a RR for 4 damage. Of course there is gonna be some draw back like you cant play any spell after this or like Flame Rift it may say deal damage to each player which wouldnt be bad for a Burn deck. Or how about a one R Elemental 2/1 Haste creature with First Strike. Or can we get a better counter then Guttural Response like a Pyroblast effect. For some reason I smell Incinerate coming back or Flame Javelin in the next Block. Im surprised we havent seen cards named 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree Burn yet.
Or how about a one R Elemental 2/1 Haste creature with First Strike.
Aside from the fact that that card would be overpowered in every colour, Mark Rosewater has stated explicitly that "Red doesn't get to have 2/1's for one mana with no downside". So it will probably not get one with upside.

If were looking at balance on the 1 drops with 2 power or some extra utiLity. White gets a bunch of creatures like this with upside or just plain with no downsides all the time. Black also has a bunch also with little or no downside. Green has its usual mana dorks and Dryad Militant with good upside. Blue has Judge's Familiar (only 1 power but super utility by itself) and Faerie Impostor with negligible downside. Firedrinker Satyr has what could turn into massive downside and Rakdos Cackler is leaving soon. How about a R one drop thats 2/2 Haste or 2/1 First Strike no Haste with something like that does 2 damage to its controller when it enter the battlefield. Or what about just a return of Kird Ape in M15 since the Shock Lands will still be here until the next Block.
How about a goblin guide that bolted(3 damage) it's controller every turn?
I think a 3 drop Planeswalker that cant be countered with Hexproof and has 4 abilities. +2 (that says you can play this at any time) Exile target Blue Spell or destroy Blue Permanent would be more balanced considering Red has had many crappy Planeswalkers. +1 would be the typical do one damage to take player. The 0 effect would be look at the top card of your library and you may play it without paying its mana cost and it cant be countered. The Ultimate would be search your library for any Instants and Sorceies they can be casted without paying their mana and cannot be targeted or redirected by spells. Time for Red to have their power Jace, Liliana, Elspeth, Garruk.

The difference between red and white/green is that red has cheap and efficient ways to remove blockers, making a 2/1 for 1 mana much more effective in red than in white/green. (Or: Why Jackal Pup was played more than Savannah Lions).
Faerie Impostor has a very real downside that you can mitigate with proper deckbuilding, but having to warp your deck around a downside still counts as a downside. You can't just put faerie imposter in any deck and expect it to do the same thing as a Savannah Lions. Dryad Militant isn't all upside, as it requires you to build your deck a certain way to avoid the symmetric effect. But if we're going to argue that downsides mitigated by deck construction don't count, then Firedrinker Satyr and Rakdos Cackler don't really have downsides either, because if their downsides ever matter you've probably already lost.
Or how about a one R Elemental 2/1 Haste creature with First Strike.

Goblin Guide and Rakdos Cackler would like to have a word with you. "Downsides" for them doesn't matter much. If you're red, you're the aggressor.
Goblin Guide and Rakdos Cackler would like to have a word with you. "Downsides" for them doesn't matter much. If you're red, you're the aggressor.
But it's still downside. And I guess the person they would want a word with is Mark Rosewater, since what I did was quoting him.
I might have been a bit fast in stating that a 2/1 hasty first striker would be "overpowered in every colour" as some of the examples the lot of you have brought up are fairly strong. But a 2/1 with first strike and haste would be able to do the same job as a Goblin Guide, with no drawback whatsoever, and able to win combat against x/2's. That would be a super duper turn one play. I still think it would be too strong in any colour, and for sure in red.
EDIT: We're veering off topic here. Sorry for keeping up the discussion, but I found it interesting.
Molten Lash 1R
Instant / Sorcery
Molten Lash deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
If a creature dealt damage by Molten Lash would die this turn, exile it instead. Molten Lash deals 1 damage to that creature's controller.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Now that Magic 2015 is spoiled, it looks like that the next 3-damage burn spell in Magic 2015 is...Lightning Strike lol. But anyways, I do understand that the inclusion of Lighting Strike in Magic 2015 is primarily for limited. Though it's never too early to start speculating on Magic 2016.

With the exception of Magic 2014, in each of the 5 previous core sets, we have had either Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, or Searing Spear as the 3-damage red instant burn spell. Perhaps future core sets will include either Incinerate, Lightning Bolt, or Searing Spear from now on? What do you think?

I think that each core set beginning with Magic 2012 had a new answer (defined as a card not listed when starting with Magic 2010) to the question "What is the 3-damage burn spell for this set?" according to your list.
Why would you try to make a prediction with a method that applied to the previous two years (back then Magic 2013 and Magic 2014) already would have yielded an incorrect result?
I think Lightning Strike/Searing Spear always have a good chance, but I wouldn't be surprised by any other answer.
Always having a 3-cmc counter spell seems more consistent a prediction - and yet even that got a recent exception with M14.
And people should delay speculating about M16 already unless this thread makes its way to Baseless.

Deal 2 damage to target creature or player. If you control at least 3 insects deal 4 damage to target player or destroy target creature instead and put a 1/1 green insect with flying and deathtouch into play. The only thing worse than a bee sting is a hundred hornet stings at once.
Why not reprint lightning bolt? It is the quintessential damage-dealing spell in this game, and I am certain that most players would prefer to have it over the strictly inferior lightning strike and searing spear.

Since Magic 2016 will be the last core set, and given that Wizards have been more aggressive towards Modern reprints, I predict that the 3-damage burn spell in Magic 2016 will be Lightning Bolt.
Why not reprint lightning bolt? It is the quintessential damage-dealing spell in this game, and I am certain that most players would prefer to have it over the strictly inferior lightning strike and searing spear.
except for players that like to be able to play creatures with less than 4 toughness and not have them die to a one-mana spell.

Basically, if they put in a ton of other high end removal, the scariness of lightning bolt goes down to more of a generic 'dies to removal' status for everything. It would downgrade creatures a bit in the format perhaps, unless they had some kind of great efficiency, protective (against removal) ability, or a strong ETB effect, but it would also mimize the side-effects normally caused by Lightning Bolt, forcing creatures to need a certain toughness level to see true 'value', compared to removal.
Such a format might be interesting in Standard for a little bit, as well as potentially helpful to Modern, in terms of introducing Innocent Blood and cutting the price on some other high end non-creature spells through reprints, might also be a good time to reprint some creatures with strong ETB abilities and stuff.
That would lead to a format where you'd only play creatures that
-are cheap enough that they don't give a too bad tempo loss if they are removed for 1 mana.
-are powerful enough in the long run that the risk of loosing out on tempo is worth the potential payoff.
-carry an inherent two-for one, like Thragtusk.
-have powerful ETB abilities that are worth the card almost by itself.

So, in other words, Modern?
Exactly. They don't want every Standard environment to simply be "Modern with a smaller card pool." Occasionally, that's fine. But every year? Power levels have to wax and wane over time in order to keep things dynamic and feeling different.
