In today's Latest Development, Sam Stottard said that there would be a cycle of dual lands in Theros.
This gives me the impression that there will be 10 dual lands, not 5.
It was very important for us that Return to Ravnica, a block based around multicolor cards, have the Standard support to make said multicolor cards playable. Keeping only one set in the core set instead of both would've caused an inequity in the mana fixing and led us to printing only one set of duals in Theros, making Block worse, and forcing us to continue an inequity somewhere else.
This seems to point at more interesting dual lands than the usual copy-pasted ones with only the words for the colours are changed:
I will let you in on a secret—there will be a cycle of dual lands in Theros block. I can't tell you anything else about them yet, but I am very excited about them.
This seems to point at those lands entering into play tapped, or having some sort of additional cost:
There was so little downside in the speed or consistency in your deck in moving from a two- to a three-color deck for the last year, and that will change when Standard rotates in the fall. Again, I believe the lands we have in place for Theros block are wonderful, but they do not offer the same level of ease and power with three-color mana bases as the shockland/M10-dual-land combination.
So, what do you expect? Manlands? Utility lands? Something more crazy?
I would like to point out that this was also stated in the article:
"Again, I believe the lands we have in place for Theros block are wonderful, but they do not offer the same level of ease and power with three-color mana bases as the shockland/M10-dual-land combination."
This means that the duals in Theros will not be Fetch lands. Just so everyone is clear on this.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
I'm thinking maybe we get something like Mossfire Valley and friends, except a new version that has "T: Add 1 to your mana pool." in addition to the other mana ability. The Nimbus Maze cycle would be good too.

I'm thinking it might be somesort of man lands, since they printed Encroaching Wastes.
When they printed Tectonic Edge it was when there were man lands, and Encroaching Wastes is very comparable (although worse imo) to Tectonic Edge.
But if it's not man lands, I would bet on Nimbus Maze cycle.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
For what it's worth, the opposite of evergreen is "deciduous" so I suggest we start using that from now on to refer to shroud, banding, islandhome, etc.
Celestial Colonnade was in a set focused on lands.
Theros is either a Legendary or Enchantment set, based on speculative information.
This is why I'm calling filterlands, although some manlands may be possible. Honestly, Encroaching Wastes is being printed as an answer to Mutavault.
Once again, it won't be filters, since they allow too much consistency. Having a shock or basic and a couple of corresponding filters allows for degenerate mana bases.
Example: having an Overgrown Tomb, Fire-lit Thicket and Twilight Mire out. That's TOO GOOD of fixing turn 3.
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
I'm thinking we will get the full set of filter lands reprinted. Ally color pairs in Theros, and enemy color pairs in Born of the Gods.
I don't think so. Filter lands make access to three colors trivial. Alsol I doubt you will see hybrid mana symbols in Theros.
My guess, it will be a set of duals that ETB untapped that tap for either a colorless or 1 of 2 colors, but you can only use the colored mana cast certain types of spells. It would broaden the mana base, but not allow easy access to a third color
Something like
Theros UW Dual Land
:symtap:, Add 1 to your mana pool
:symtap:, Add U or W to your mana pool. You may only spend mana produced this way to cast an instant.
I think it would be an utterly horrible design, but it would add mana fixing without making three colors simple.
My bet is on a twisted design of fastlands to make them "slowlands". If Seachrome Coast enters untapped below the count of 2 lands, maybe the new design will enter untapped above the count of 3 lands, otherwise tapped. I suspect this because in DGM the game was slowered down a bit and M14 seems a bit heavy in mana cost.
Am i the only one who thinks there won't be filter lands because we wouldn't have two blocks with hybrid mana in a row?
I was thinking Filterlands at first, but that's actually a very good point. Not to say it can't be done (Lorwyn block immediately proceeded Shards), but unless hybrid mana is in the set anyway, NWO dictates that it's not gonna happen.
All told, I'm expecting a brand new design for these duals. Fastlands are too recent, fetches are broken and would only power up multicolor, painlands are boring, karoos are Ravnica-specific, and no other duals really measure up to gates. Besides, fastlands were the last new design for duals, and it's high time for a new one.

This is good speculation, I wouldn't have thought of that.
It would help slow down the format for sure. (Whether that is a good thing or not is up in the air).

Old enough to know better, much too young to care.
My bet is on tapped utility dual lands, kinda like the Worldwake manlands, but that have effects like Gavony Township and co instead of turning into creatures. It would much more exciting to discover each of them, unlike a cycle of 10 Nimbus Maze, filterlands or "slowlands".
It definitely won't be filter lands. It's still too easy to use them. It'll probably be something interesting like the Future Sight cards or something entirely new.
I think there are actually some points we can take from this, that those lands won't work as easily with shocks (he's talking about standard) to make for 3 color decks or in general easy mana bases. This mean that those lands won't reference basic lands type themselves this because else they'd be interacting too easily with the shocks, something the checkland did,
AND they probably have another mechanic that either:
1)punish you for playing too many of them
2)punish you for playing too much non-basics in general
3)work better with more basics in your deck
Point 1) could indicate legendary duals. If they printed Legenduals (as in, old duals with legendary supertypes), you wouldn't play 4 of them, so you could only add 1 or 2 in each deck without making your mana base uncomfortable. Theros is also a legendary block, so if it will ever happen, it could there.
Point 2) could indicate somethings like Fastlands that check on your non-basics. Something like (if you control another non-basic, enter into play tapped), could be possible. This would again be anti-sinergy with other duals, and would promote dual color decks over 3 color ones.
Point 3) could indicate, again, a cipt trigger that untap if you control at least a basic land, ala-checkland but not basic land types, just a basic land. This again would work in promoting more dual and single color decks with splash over fully fledged three color decks.
I'd like to see a Legendary cycle of Dual or Tri lands even (value out of the fact they are legendary)
They would play into the slow down of mana fixing by having only 1 on the board, it would allow you to play 4 colors even with a single Shock Land in play. Rarity maybe not even have to be mythic.
It would play hard into Wizards' love for Commander, and fit a legendary theme they could be making Theros around. And like the article today about mana fixing said, Magic is Cyclical, it has been 3 blocks since alara. so an homage to the shards.
Again just speculative and wishful thinking.

I'm leaning towards Nimbus Maze cycle or a River of Tears-esque cycle.
THANK THE LORD.
My blue fetches safe lol.
I don't always post about Rafiq of the Many, but when I do, I cardlink to the original artwork, and not the supplementary product version.
"I trust myself to do my duty, even unto death. It's what comes after that I'm afraid of."
"Just fight without fear. Your soul is protected by the hand of Avacyn and will never submit to evil."
But those allow consistency, whereas the new ones will not.

Everyone else would like your blue fetches to drop in price tho.
Also, I think Nimbus Maze cycle is likely.

I'm flabbergasted. You mean Wizards won't print dual lands with no cost to them whatsoever? Flabbergasted I say!

They fit in a mono color set. And having fetch lands + shocks in standard would be awesome
