Price of Progress would be obviously and brutally overpowered in Standard, and for that matter Modern. You need to have Wasteland in the same format so people can kill their own lands to protect themselves, or else it's just insanely efficient burn.
They could make it cost 3 and make it deal 1 damage per land and it would still be playable in this format as a 3-mana Lava Axe.
I mean, can you imagine how brutal it would be to retrigger an Anathemancer with a Restoration Angel right now? Just dome people for 6-7 or more? It would be insane. Any damage-based punishment for nonbasic lands would have to be the least efficient ever printed to even be balanced in this format.

Because opening up the format to more possible deck archetypes is a bad thing? I'm puzzled too.
If you create an environment where the mana allows you to play anything you want in a deck with little to no drawback, then every deck becomes 5 Color Good Stuff.dec and the meta suffers. Reminds me of the 5 Color Control from Shadowmor/Alara. You shouldn't be able to play something like Cryptic Command in a 5 color deck, at least not as a 4-of and be able to reliably cast it on turn 4. That's when you know mana bases have gotten too good.
They need to reprint (or just print) something that can at least punish these mana bases somehow. In Alara, we got Anathemancer. But now it's even more out of control, I'm seeing decks that run nothing but non-basics, some that run nothing but dual lands.
Basically, having access to all 5 colors reliably doesn't diversify anything. It stifles creativity because someone, somewhere will find that uber deck and suddenly that's the only deck anyone (who can afford to) will play.
In light of the recent spoilers, with Staff of the Mind Magus at #221, and at least 2 artifacts after(Staff of the Wild Magus and Vial of Poison), we will not be seeing a cycle of 10 lands in M14, since basics start at #230.
221+2=223, 6 integers from 223 to 230.
That's a good catch. As the 6th land, I would expect a sliver-enabling land. But maybe Evolving Wilds covers that.
I'm hoping for 10 checklands. I'd rather not shell out more money to buy all new lands if they rotate, that would be very disappointing.
I am with this guy.
I can't afford a brand new set of lands... at least I'd have to spend all my mana on the lands and none of the money on the actual deck. If I don't have to worry about the lands then I can spend that money updating the deck from inn+ rtr to rtr theos.. otherwise its just going to be RTR block deck pretty much.
I mean I only have the 4 shocklands 6 checklands and none of the innstrad lands in my three colour land base... my 4 colour deck has only gates for fixing.
Alara block was not the problem. Shadowmoor and Alara coexisting next to each other was the problem.

Cavern of Souls is the sliver enabling land at least until October.
