This is something. I remember the Niv Mizzet = 1 thing in the flavor text.
Guessing here that there will be a gimmick here before the release of Dragon's Maze, like what they did in Innistrad with the letters etc. Maybe there will be a letter that goes like "Lazav is planning something, he has encoded the message in the guildgates blah blah blah"
Wizards wouldn't do this without telling everyone in a future Arcana.
Well goddamn, I thought of those threads as hogwash ("If you take random letters out of these cards, you could see the future!" and all that stuff), but now that I actually pay attention to the letters, I can see it. And what's even worse, the message is there on the Russian cards, too ("Гильдии Равники"). Actually, the letters have been marked on Magiccards for a while now, but of course, I never looked up the Russian cards there.
Now that I know that the message is there, I just hope that the guilds won't be going away any time soon. The single greatest thing about Ravnica is that it gave people a great community to associate themselves with, and getting rid of it is like shooting the golden goose.
EDIT: The only other language that got the message down on Magiccards is Japanese:
やここ
るこの
どのぎ
のじる
みっど
Since Japanese is all about wordplay and different ways of writing words, it's harder to decipher, but it's something like "やるどのみここのじっこのギルド".
I imagine that the tablet of the guilds is guidance on what guilds will pair up within the dragon's maze. It makes it easier to understand what three color combinations to draft. You can tell this because there are lines connecting neighboring pairs of guilds.
Part of the design of RTR is about making it so people actually draft guilds. That was the complaint about the original ravnica, it introduced cool guilds but people drafted 3 color combinations.
To make it easier for people, you won't say you're drafting Bant, you'll say you're drafting Selyesnia / Simic or Simic / Azorius, and both of these choices will give different deck feels when drafting bant. This also makes designing the prerelease sealed easier, as you could pick 2 guild's booster packs to start with.
Well, *that's* ominous!
I guess Re-return to Ravnica ain't happening?
So much for this "less dark" approach to the plot they spoke of
A return return to Ravnica might be able to do some messed up stuff if the guilds get properly disbanded... Maybe they could switch up the guild mechanics to different guilds while staying in flavour: for example Selesnya (or whatever replaces them) becomes an underground organization and could get some Dimir mechanic to make it an eco terrorist group?

It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
That is absolutely crazy. I am extremely impressed. Not just at the eagle eyes here who noticed it, but for WOTC for thinking of this idea and pulling it off. Wow.
For some reason, I feel like there's going to be a cycle in DGM that has this same thing, continues on this same message, and says "FOR A NEW FUTURE" or something to that effect. Dunno, just some baseless speculation here.
I know this is a dead horse that has already been beaten as far as possible, but maybe we will see "two guild" wedge/shard pairings become the new thing. *Tin Hat Time* We have seen in a few of the flavor txt a fear/expectation of certain guilds working together (ala Simic/Golgari, Boris/Izzitj, ect ect ect). Maybe these are more than just character thoughts, maybe this will be the new instrumentation. Imagine a card that has evolve and scavange, an instant that has overload that gives your creatures battalion, an unleash card meant to deliver ciphers ect ect ect. /tin hat
But in all seriousness I could see that happening, but that is just me hoping for dual ability cards.
I could definitely see them going 3 color in DMZ. There just seems to be very subtle hints in the artwork for such a thing, like the Boros city that has that sun symbol that's similar to the Orzohv logo.
For Japanese, instead of やるどのみここのじっこのぎるど, it's ぎるどのみやこのじっこのぎるど, because the first highlighted character for Azorius (義), can be read two different ways depending on context. That then can be rewritten as ギルドの都の十個のギルド (GIRUDO no miyako no jikko no GIRUDO), or "the ten guilds of the city of guilds."
And I'm betting on post-apocalyptic wasteland myself.

Didn't it seem like this was the way it was going anyways? This block is named "Gatecrash", after all, and there's a building storyline thread of "the guildless". Originally they had intended the guilds to already have been destroyed after Ravnica block, but they brought them back because people loved them so much. Now that they've done two full blocks of the guilds, they probably feel safe removing them from the storyline so that they can do something new with the setting, ala Scars block.
I will always miss my guilds, though *single manly tear*.
This is awesome. I don't think it's a message from WotC to the players though; I think it's just something whispering those words through the gates right before they, well, crash it open?
This is some baseless plot speculation, but would it not be freaking awesome if the culmination of this block actually lead to the guilds not so much being dissolved as united? The borders between them would be destroyed, but they would end up all part of a single organization, which would ultimately become the new coalition army to fight against the eldrazi/phyrexians?

Well that was badass, maybe a "Help Jace" game or something.
Even the Chinese version has raised characters that form 'the guilds of Ravnica'. Nice move by WotC.

I don't always post about Rafiq of the Many, but when I do, I cardlink to the original artwork, and not the supplementary product version.
