In most MtG block sets, we have at least one green mana dork who can produce a mana and costs 1 mana. For instance, we have Avacyn's Pligrim, Arbor Elf, Llanowar Elves, etc. Pretty simple, huh? Well, upon inspection of Dragon's Maze, I have realized that it could really use a CMC 1 Mana Dork. We don't have Birds of Paradise yet, but I wouldn't ask for a reprint. It seems Wizards is holding out for us.
Now, my question is, do you think we will see a CMC 1 Mana Dork in DGM? At the common level, it would be most interesting as a Simic or a Gruul card, and tap to add blue or red mana to your mana pool. However, I would actually just like to see Arbor Elf printed in DGM. Why? Well, for Limited and Block Constructed, really. It would help some of their mana fixing problems they are always complaining about.
What do you guys think? Will DGM contain the next Llanowar Elves variant?
Maybe the Gruul/Simic version of Avacyn's Pilgrim. Maybe Elves of the Deep Shadow. I wouldn't count on any of those, though. Arbor Elf and Avacyn's Pilgrim are exceptions, most blocks don't have 1cc accel. Core sets do. And we already have two 1cc accelerators in Standard.
What I can see is Rampant Growth, or a 2cc artifact that accelerates/fixes (Mind Stone, Prismatic Lens).
But we have Deathrite Shaman that works fine with all the lands that sac (maybe even better than any other 1cc mana dork), then Gyre Sage at 2cc; then Axebane Guardian at 3cc. We have Verdant Haven to act as a Fertile Ground and Prophetic Prism to be the small artifact mana fixer. We have keyrunes to replace signets and 20 dual lands.
We really need one for block.
Alot of the best creatures are very expensive, angel of serenity, armada wurm, and dgm brings in a bunch more, not to mention sphinx's revelation, rakdos's return, and many other spells can benifit greatly from ramp.
They should have put arbor elf and farseek in rtr. How is block supposed to ramp reliably? Gyre sage is unreliable, and a lightning rod for removal, where as arbor elf kind of flies under the radar. Everything else is 3cmc ramp which, in my opinion, is too slow for a format where mono red is one of the best decks.
Alot of decks are playing Gatecreeper Vine because it actually gives you a land, rather than just praying that gyre sage can live long enough to get a counter or two and use them.
The ramp in block sucks.
But there is supposably an uncommon mana-fixing cycle in DGM that hasn't been spoiled yet. Hopefully it's some kind of 2cmc ramp.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
We really need one for block.

Current hunch is that Wizards already used its mana dork quota in Deathrite Shaman (which somehow manages to be better than Birds of Paradise in Modern and beyond but not strictly better).
Birds probably aren't going to return. They were cool but flying is not an ability green gets, especially at 1 mana. A similar creature without flying (maybe 0/2 instead) could certainly work though.
Judging from its printings in M10, M11 and M12 I think that's nonsense. The reason for its non-return is more a power level concern, and the fact that it gets stale after being printed for so long.

Yea I dint get it either. It having flying is probably the most unlikely reason for a card not to get reprinted I've ever heard.

This (sort of).
It's not even a power-level concern. It's just to shake things up a bit. Arbor Elf is basically both Llanowar Elves and Birds of Paradise in one, with the shocklands. It was a nice opportunity to have something different in our acceleration slot and see what happens. Birds will be back soon. Maybe not in M14, so that Arbor Elf can play with shocklands a bit more, but soon enough.
I for one wouldn't be opposed to it. Outside of deathrite (And even then, only in certain decks), just about ALL of the decent ramp spells and good 1 drop dorks rotate out of standard come October. I would like some kind of dork in M14 or DGM. I would love a card that taps for a different color then what you use to play it (Avacyn's pilgrim as an example). I don't want birds in this meta. It would be WAAAAY to good with what we got now.
Well, there's at most one rare slot left in mono-green. Who here really thinks that it's going to be birds?
my money goes to a common/uncommon mana dude. we already had our rare in deathrite shaman, but he has a condition that must be met first. we still don't have a mana dude, no hoops to jump through, cmc1, for the block yet.

Just as a heads up - MaRo stated on his blog a few months ago (and again time to time) that he doesn't want Greens "Dragon" to be a 0/1 Flyer.
Power level wise - we are starting to see spells that would be 6 or 7 cmc seeing that 5 or 6 spot and birds allows you to potentially hit that turn 4 or even 3 (since wizards has a 2cmc ramp spell every block).
The trade off with more powerful midrange is less powerful early game.

The 2 toughness makes him slightly better so he can help evolve other guys if you don't drop him turn 1.
Though of all the previous iterations of the 1cc dorks, only the rares have deviated from a 1/1 for G, (though I agree that would be VERY nice for limited)

Anyway, so we still need a R producing 1cc dork, though I would like to see a straight U one also (for edh).
