Hello everyone. As well all know, MtG sets usually come out with five intro pack decks, containing 60 cards and two booster packs. The decks tend to drift towards casual players, although some contain fairly strong cards and can attract a whole spectrum of players. The intro packs usually showcase a mechanic or tribe of creatures in the set. There are typically five intro packs per set, one for each color, or color pairing.
But wait! Dragon's Maze only has five intro packs, but there are ten guilds! What does this mean? Well, it could mean a few different things, actually, but here are my personal ideas.
The first idea is that the intro packs will be mono colored. I don't like this idea. It's a gold block! Multicolor dominates! I don't see this happening.
The second idea is that they will pick five guilds to have Into packs and the rest will be cut out. I also don't like this idea. That would be completely unfair to the players and other guilds who those players love!
In Dragon's Maze, it has been speculated that the guilds will "pair up" with another guild to form tri-color connections. Although I don't think that will be the case, that certainly doesn't mean that the intro packs won't follow that idea. Guilds help other guilds, we know this. I personally think that the intro packs will be triplicate of colors, two guilds each. Why? They could include all the guilds and make everyone happy, including pairing the colors with guilds that work well together. Also, I like my idea because we already know that the prerelease will give us a pairing of two guilds, so that doesn't put tri-color decks out of the question at all.
Here are what I would speculate the guild pairings for the decklists to be:
Boros and Selesnya
Red, White, Green
- Populate and Batallion are so synergistic! Strong, aggressive, and numerous.
Dimir and Orzhov
Blue, Black, White
- Extort off your Ciphered copies. Control, evasion, and nasty spells.
Gruul and Rakdos
Green, Red, Black
- Another aggressive deck. Your creatures get big from Unleashing them, and since they aren't going to be blocking, you're going to want to Bloodrush them!
Azorius and Izzet
White, Blue, Red
- Control! Control! Detain, Overload, SPELLS. Nothing to it.
Simic and Golgari
Blue, Green, Black
- This is the one I was most troubled with. The counters both seem like a good idea, they've been mentioned together on various cards, but they're not all that synergistic. Anyhow, the goal is to play all sorts of creatures and let your creatures grow to wild sizes, then use evasion and spells to play around with them.
The idea is that since there is only five decks, we will need triple color decks, even if the set of Draon's Maze is not about the Guilds picking allies. Wizards know that people will make triple color decks, the Gates make tri-color decks very possible, and even the PreRelease is giving us 3 colors. To me, this gives us a lot of information and further openings into the realm of speculation.
i actually think the mimic + golgari is the most obvious one. thanks to scavenge you can spam lots of counters on the field and then you have lots and lots of simic cards that can use them

Possibly 4color or 5color.
Possibly one or two wedges.
Possibly one or two lone guilds (Izzet would be most likely).
It's not like Intro packs have any kind of minimal quality level.
They are basicaly a bunch of cards with a lose theme. They can do what they wan't, some clueless chump will still buy them. Because of that I wouldn't expect a whole cycle. Just some different themes like "Mono Color Matters", which also looks to overlap with the guildless movement (and will probably will get some cards in DGM). Gates Mater could also be easily done, especially since "the maze"-theme will have some connection to gates.
I really hope it's not those; that would be a terrible idea. However, I do think you could be right, there is no order to how they do them.
Fruit for thought. Does anyone want to play against a JUND, Esper, Naya, or Grixis in a Pre-release? I want to play Jund or Naya, but know it could suck in the Mirror if my opponent oppened better stuff.
I think one Gateless WGx and one Gate Matters GRB deck is a guarantee.
Ravnica is about guilds but it's not only guilds guilds guilds. This is the kind of place other ravnican themes could show up.
If they print Nephilim (very likely since people want 4 color legends for EDH), we could get a 4 color decks multicolor crazy one too.
I think a mono black "slum" deck featuring rats and a couple of guild show ups (all black guilds have connection to Ravnica's crime world) could also be veyr fun.
While I love the idea of 3-colored intro decks (and hope it to be the case), I think that the decks will be the guilds that were not part of the Event decks.
We have a Golgari, Rakdos, Boros and Simic Event Decks, with a lone 5th comming in Dragon's Maze (let's say, Gruul). So, that would leave Selesnya, Izzet, Azorius, Dimir and Orzhov out, exactly 5 guilds to be our Intro Decks. Thoughts?

One of my theories is exactly like this, except for some changes. Rather than the DGM event deck being Gruul, it would be Azorius.
There is another thing that WOTC does with intro packs. Let's say all 5 intro packs are 2 color. There will never ever be 3 intro packs with the same color in it, so Azorius, Dimir, and Izzet can never be in the same set.
So it would be more like Orzhov, Dimir, Izzet, Gruul, and Selesnya.
I also have some 3 color and mono color theories too, but I am leaning more towards the 2 color approach.
There are some theories that I know won't happen. 10 intro packs in the set. Impossible, and it isn't done.
