Basically my theory is that this isn't just fun and games. Maro already knows what planeswalker card will be released in the next fall expansion (and magic 2014 for that matter). I conclude that we are finally getting a new, baller, 3 mana Chandra that will make rdw fans everywhere say, "thank you wizards, I finally forgive you for tibalt."

Maybe we will see planeswalker equipment and a block based around Nicol Bolas, finally revealing his plans. And a great chandra card? lol, this was a cool one.
Making a good red planeswalker is so hard because red's piece of the color pie is so narrow. It's really hard to make one that isn't just either broken or terrible. Koth of the Hammer is the best one they've come up with so far.

It is, but his application is rather narrow as well, and he disappeared after Scars rotated. But the thing about that comic is that it brings back memories of when Chandra, the Firebrand was suppose to the Chandra that pushed red into memorable planeswalkers. I have to admit... if this Chandra 4.0 doesn't work (especially after Tibalt), then I fear Wizards just might "accidently" make a broken beyond belief Planeswalker and then preemptively ban it like they did with Memory Jar.

Maro already said Chandra gets to lead a block in the near future, there was a big discussion on Tumblr about it at one point a few months back. Basically people asked why Jace always leads blocks, he gave a bunch of examples and said Chandra gets to be the title character for an upcoming one.

Chandra the IVth (R)(R)(R)
+1: Return an instant card at random from your graveyard to your hand.
-X: Chandra deals X damage to X target creatures. The damage can't be prevented.
-6: You get an emblem with, "If a red source you control would deal damage, it deals double that damage instead."
\3/
a) Surreal Memoir, red needs a refueler desperately. Random and only instant to balance it.
b) Weaker than Tremor, Pyroclasm, flamebreak, etc, but better through choice of targets versus board wipe.
c) Furnace of Rath, for synergy with above.
My money's on M14. I've just got this feeling that this year's large set will be completely unpredictable and change everything.
Karric - I'm glad you speculater on RRR as a cost. It seems that the best way to make a red walker is to make it an EXTREMELY red walker.
Also, hurrah for Chandra leading a block. I hope she fight liliana in it. THe only thing that would be better than my two favorite characters together in a block would be my 2 favorite characters fighting each other in a block. Fighting each other, WHILE RIDING DRAGONS.

Chandra is definitely the coolest looking planeswalker: the fiery red hair and the googles make her very recognizable.
I hope they find a way to make a truly great version of her in the near future. Maybe the solution to make her truly great would be to have her be multicolour?
I definitely agree she needs to do "Shock" with her plus ability. With the power creep of creature nowadays dealing 1 damage per turn is kind of lackluster, even though it would seem like a big jump from her previous incarnations. A playable Chandra wouldn't be too R intensive in cost, thus allowing her to fit into multiple decks, like Lilianna of the Veil.

+1: deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
-2: Return a Instant or Sorcery from your graveyard to your hand at random.

Loyalty: 3
Chandra, Utility Extraordinaire RRR
+1: ~ deals 2 damage to target player.
0: Discard up to two cards then draw that many cards.

Seems reasonably powerful (I think have +1 for a shock is a bit too powerful, so I made it just to the face), would be great in RDW since it allows you to discard lands to draw into more spells, remove blockers, or go to the face for a bit of extra reach.
Seriously, I like Chandra, and I think they're just a minor knob-tweak away from making something awesome. As it is, I think Firebrand is just *this close* to being good. I think Shock as a plus ability would be pushing it a bit far, unless maybe her CMC was >=5. But then she wouldn't be highly playable, would she? Remember, the only Jace whose plus ability is actual card advantage is Memory Adept.

Mwahahahaha...Return To....DOMINARIA! Now that would be epic and have bolas as the villian and chandra as the hero, I know I know, no bases to this, but I still think it would be cool to see Dominaria as the 20th anniversary block (and would make a great set name)
a 3 mana Chandra good enough to play will need to be:
RRR costed.
Have a + ability that at least shocks, but really needs to bolt.
Have a 0 or - ability that does something "red", and does it good enough to worth using the ability.
If the + ability is like 1 damage, then its gonna be sucky.
if the - ability is not aggressive enough, no one will play her to use it.
The ultimate needs to either be some sort of obliterate relative, or an emblem thats good.

As much as I would love this, bolt as the + ability would be insane on any walker, let alone a 3 mana one. I could maybe see 3 to creature only or 3 to player only, but that's still even pushing it. In general, removal on PWs tends to be minus abilities (Liliana of the Veil, Gideon Jura, Garruk Relentless, even JTMS's bounce ability was a minus) because reusable removal is so very powerful. Not only that, it would allow her to protect herself very well while adding loyalty, and if they can't kill her right away, she would just take over the board.
The fear I have is that they might feel that the 3 mana version of Chandra can't have abilities better than Firebrand's (which in a way would also imply that they think Firebrand was very good).
My dream version of the new Chandra would in a way make up for some of their biggest recent screw ups: Chandra Ablaze (making it 6 mana when JTMS was only 4), Snapcaster Mage (not being red), and Tibalt (everything about him):
+: Draw a card, randomly discard a card. If the card is red, deal 3 damage to target creature of player.
-: Target card in your graveyard has flashback.
Ultimate: All cards in your graveyard has flashback 0

Her + would be based on Tibalt's and Ablaze's + ability but here it will only deal damage if the discarded card is a red spell and you have no control over what gets discarded.
Her - would be based on Snapcaster Mage/Past in Flames and you would still need to pay the spell's mana cost and it can still get countered.
Her ultimate was based on Ablaze's ultimate just because I want to see that on a playable planeswalker
That being said... yeah, it would be a 'bit' pushed but red deserves something pushed a little after all the terrible planeswalkers it's gotten lately And Chandra so far is the only one of the original 5 that has never had a good planeswalker so this here would fix it!
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
Actually, I was thinking, what if a hypothetical new Chandra had as an ability:
+N: Deal 3 damage to target creature
A creature-only bolt, but note the lack of "may". Such an ability could potentially backfire, if the only legal targets are your own creatures. This would give the ability better power balance, open up possibilities for a potential Red control deck, and make the card interesting and skill-based!

Love the 0 ability.
My take on Chandra the 4th - 2RR
+1: Chandra the 4th deals 2 damage divided as you choose among up to 2 target creatures.
0: Draw 2 cards, then discard a card at random
-8: Cast any number of red instant and/or sorcery cards from your graveyard without paying their mana costs.
Starting loyalty: 3
The + ability would be usable even if there are no creatures on the battlefield, and can be VERY powerful if you catch your opponents on a bad start. However, it would be balanced by the mana cost (4cc) and the fact that it would enter the battlefield with just 3 counters instead of 4.
The middle ability is possibly a bit too powerful even with the random discard, however, if we compare it with RTR's Jace, it's probably ok.
The ult is the same as Chandra Ablaze's, which I think is a good ult for red decks.
The only thing that makes me not like this design so much is that the middle and last ability are anti-synergistic due to the loyalty gains (the 0 ability feeds the Ult, but it doesn't help you achieve it). This at the same time, balances the card a bit more, and is very similar to the way Elspeth Tirel works.
ooh, thinking up a mono-red planeswalker? fuuuuun!
Chandra, Mistress of Flame RRR
+1: Chandra deals 1 damage to target player, then 1 damage to target creature that player controls.
- 1: Draw 2 cards then discard 2 cards.
- 7: You gain an emblem that says "Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may deal X damage to target creature or player, where X is that spell's converted mana cost."
Starting Loyalty: 3
the +1 is a sidegraded Searing Blaze that works even if the player lacks a creature. The -1 is card advantage, and 'cus it takes away a loyalty isn't random. The ultimate is a spell version of Warstorm Surge, and when you do manage to get it should seal the game for you if you hadn't won already (which for a red deck should happen by then anyways.)
