There was a line within this paragraph which particularly caught my attention.
I made a big deal early in the format's life that not only were we allowed to reprint the staple cards of the format, but that we actively planned to do so. A good bit of that rhetoric was anchored in the fact that I knew the ten "shocklands" were slated to appear in Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash; similarly, a couple other big Modern cards are slated to show up in other Standard-legal sets down the line. But we didn't have a great solution for getting more copies of cards that are too powerful to reintroduce to Standard into circulation. (If you're wondering, yes, we debated many times the possibility of having Tarmogoyf return to Standard but ultimately decided we didn't want to do it.)
Notice it used the word big which translate to something meaningful. Anyone care to take any guesses ?
Just looking at the top 8 of PTRTR, I could imagine these "big" Modern staples being reprinted in the near future in a Standard legal set:
-Thoughtseize
-the Commands cycle [or maybe they'll just reprint some of them like Cryptic, Profane, and Primal?]
-Telling Time
-Repeal
-Sakura-Tribe Elder [after Dawntreader Elk & Farseek rotate out of Standard OR in M14, as those 3 would exist together only for 3 months or so]
-Sleight of Hand [after Snapcaster rotates out of Standard]
-Spell Snare [after Snapcaster rotates out of Standard]
None of them are that powerful by themselves, but contextually [like when Cryptic had easy mana with the 5cc decks that used Reflecting Pool + Vivids, or all flash Faeries alongside it]. I could imagine them being super cautious about Cryptic Command and waiting until Snapcaster rotated out. Otherwise, hitting triple any color is hard early on in a game with all these dual lands unless you're heavily invested in one or two colors only.

Actually I think Snare is fine in standard. As a lot of decks are the midrange decks, there's not a ton of 2 drops of tremendous value (snap being the obvious exception).

My guess is that MM will get a lot of cards with specific flavor that wouldn't make much sense to reprint in another block or core set, especially Kamigawa stuff since I doubt we'll see a sequel block to it any time soon.
Well I think is people think that this MM set will have every awesome possible Modern reprint in it, they are going to be disapointed somewhat. I'm sure we'll have some amazing surprises, but people's expectations are going to be WAY bigger than reality on this. Point being, WOTC wants to save some goodies for other sets. Something like Thoughtseize or Damnation would drive demand for other sets and can be used regardless of theme.
We might not see them right away even, but I think it's silly to think they haven't saved some goodies for things OTHER than MM.
Thoughtseize seems like a big one. Without Duress making big waves, I doubt that it would be particularly bad for the format. I also don't think Wizards wants a relatively minor upgrade over Duress to be $30, and thus a relatively high barrier to entry for competitive play.
I'd also say:
Mutavault- Wizards likes tribal enough to print a counterspell hoser for them. Why not the best of all manlands?
Damnation- They've got Mutilate for now, but after it rotates, I could see wizards giving black some Wrath love, since they're already feeling cheated by Supreme Verdict.
Sleight of Hand- Blue cantrips are in a bit of a tough spot right now, with Snapcaster and Miracles breaking cards like Ponder. It's appearance in DotP 2013 seems to indicate that Wizards hasn't forgotten about it, either.
I don't predict reprints of Aether Vial, Cryptic Command, or Bob anytime soon outside of the Modern Masters box. All three are just a little bit too broken for standard.
So it sounds like once June rolls around and we know what's in the set we can figure out what's missing and then make that the chase mythic of the new set.
Thoughtseize doesn't seem at all out of flavour for Dimir, playing it with Snapcaster in standard would be exciting, but not insane.
Consider, play a shockland, play thoughtseize. Turn 3 play snapcaster, thoughtseize, you've done 6 damage to yourself, that's no longer an insignificant amount, especially considering that all you've done is disrupt, you haven't actually played a threat.
I can see that being a valid play in standard, and not being overpowered.

I do agree with that to a degree, but Thragtusk makes that damage almost a non issue. Pretty strong play of slowing them down, and then play a creature that negates most of the down side of taking that line of play.
LT351 @maro254how hard was it not reprinting Dark Confidant
Not hard. I like Bob (the card and the Hall of Famer), but Dark Confidant is a little bit too good to repeat. (Take this with a grain of salt as I'm horrible at judging power levels.)
Yeah, Bob would probably be too good for Standard with Snapcaster Mage and Delver in the format. I suppose it could depend on what Gatecrash brings us, but ... yeah. Maybe once they rotate, if the format slows down enough so that running a deck full of 1- or 2- mana spells isn't as viable, then maybe they can try him out. I dunno, I wasn't playing at the time, was he big while he was in Standard? What was that metagame like?

Let me tell you, battling storm versus dredge versus Faeries in draft is an unforgettable experience, kind of half-way between a normal set and Cube.
Also, this. So things like Clique, Spellstuter sprite, Pestermite and many of storms cards are likely in the set. I'm so hyped for the GP to. Vegas is close enough for me to go and i'm gonna heart this set so so much.

I'd say Thoughtseize seems to be a shoo-in for a reprint. The name is non-plane specific, plus the ability is not format-warping. Apart from that I can't think of any other card right now that is a viable candidate

Does however mean they aren't wanting to put him in standard again, or at least heavily imply that. Modern Masters isn't Standard legal so?
