I think that person meant Carthaginian. Anyways, I just suspect this means the next block (the one after RTR) will have a Greco-Roman theme. Also, where is this Ancient Egypt idea coming from?
Maro's Tumblr
Don't remember the exact quote but we were told around Innistrad or so that Maro knew that we were getting a block with Egypt based themes. Since we know about how far out they work and we seem to be getting revisits every other block, the block following RTR seems like the best time for it to show up otherwise it will be late 2014 before we see it if current patterns continue.

You know what they could do that i would actually like? If they decided that it's time to tone down the epic fantasy and focus a bit more of old school epic.
Like, Give me a bit less Jace Vs Nicol Bolas, give me a bit more "Troy and Sparta" y'know?
Have the gods on the back, playing pawns with the leaders of the world, sure... but a more "human" and "grounded" theme like in the early sets ( a very "Arabian Nights" theme for example) would be a cool breather before we juice it up again to nearly Anime levels of Powah.
Ehrm. Ever heard of Taysir? Yeah, second most powerful planeswalker ever, and a native to Rabiah and the star of the main storyline of the set.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
It's not about MtG, it's about WOTC's other hot property: D&D. There's a Dragonlance character named Theros Ironfield and even a Dragonlance novel with his name. If anything it means that Dragonlance will be part of the upcoming D&D 5th edition.
Meh...I never liked Dragonlance.
I liked the first and second trilogies of books, but other than that, meh. It did have one of the coolest fantasy villains of all time though, a death knight so powerful that not even Ravenloft could contain him for long. (If you know Dragonlance, you know who I am talking about.)
But back on topic. It is not unusual for certain names to be reused in different properties. Remember how many different fantasy characters are named Rand. >.<

There totally should be some more cultural mythology blocks. They did Shinto, and Gothic Horror (it is a cultural mythology, Victorian vampires and werewolves). Not to mention churches, angels, and demons.
Roman/Greek/Persian/Egypt, etc. stuff is a little hot right now I guess with stuff like Percy Jackson, Clash of the Titans, 300, etc. running around. I think the timing could make sense. After all, Innistrad was really well tiemd with Twilight, TrueBlood, etc.
I would most certainly welcome a Roman/Greek mythology block.

Not sure how they would have timed this. Movies are made, what? 3 years? Coming up with a story about a year before that. Blocks are decided 6 years in advance. SIX! There's no way this wasn't a coincidence.

Yeah, Innistrad was a long time coming, but didn't it take them a long time to actually green light the project? They probably gave it the go ahead when Twilight started to get popular. The books started to get popular a fair while ago.
Theros? Finally, a plane where my minor in classics proves useful!
Here's my speculation. Theros will have elements taken from Greek and Roman mythology, with special emphasis given to a pantheon of deity figures who are as powerful as they are dangerously irresponsible and filled with emotion.

At least that's the impression I had.
Around 2008/7. I was interested in the books, then I found out they were for prepubescent girls.
Am I to believe that an Angel of Serenity (a 7 drop mediocre reanimation target) is going to have the SAME value as a Hallowed Fountain? 15 bucks each? Sorry, not going to happen. Not now, not ever.
6 bucks for a Sphinx's Revelation? The value will tank by at least 50% as most of the spells of it's nature (post-Stroke).
In 3 months, say January 1st, it will be interesting to see how much you overpaid.
Greek Theme? I guess we could get the Titans reprinted.
I can't wait!
Didn't one of the Wizards guys recently say that we should expect to see more Minotaurs soon? If we're having a Greek-themed block, I demand Minotaur tribal!
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
There is a tiny chance that it can happen despite his demise during Invasion block. Why? Simple: Taysir has canonically came back from the dead once before.

I think it's pretty clear that this is not for Magic. It's more likely a trademark for an already existing character in Wizards' other IP than a new plane that shares a name with said character.
This guy can't even tell his Asians apart, then goes on to wish for Greeks.
I don't understand this statement, are you saying that Buddhism is not in Japan? Zen Buddhism is one of the biggest sects of Mahayana Buddhism and is Japanese.
As for Theros, I'm going to remain skeptical. We all thought Zendikar was either a dinosaur, caveman, pirate, aztec, native american, or Indiana Jones type of set and it ended up disappointing those that wished for one of them and ended up being none of the above.
Greco-Roman sounding words are used in practically everything that has fantasy, and the greek, latin & persian languages are responsible for every common indo-european language (english, spanish, italian, french, german, etc).

So did urza. But considering it is all fiction anyone can come back from the dead with a decent story. Urza could even come back considering glacians stones are in karn still.

The horror theme was a risk. It wasn't until Zombies and Vampires became popular that they were given the go ahead.
Mark Rosewater talked about it in one of his columns.
That was added after the set came out, Arabian Nights was based on the book...

Implying Buddhism isn't prevalent in Japan and isn't the source of many of their major holidays.
