So, with the advent of "modern" magic as a format, does anyone htink its possible that we would get a "masters" style set bringing old cards into the format that were only printed from before?
Cards like wasteland and force, obviously, but also other cards that are good but not AMAZING BORKEN.
Seems like the settup would be prime for something like that...
I was under the impression that the entire point of having Modern as a format was to NOT have these cards in the format...?
EDIT: From what I understand, the point of the Masters Editions was to put old cards onto MTGO in such a way that they were draftable. Old sets weren't made with Draft in mind, unlike new sets. They could have just "printed" old sets online, but they chose not to so that players could enjoy old cards in draft.
The odds are very close to zero. I'll come at the question from a different angle:
How would you make an appealing paper MED set while complying with the Reserve List? You can make little sets like reanimator or From the Vault, but how to you make a compelling whole set with the nostalgic identity of each color without touching the reserve list?
Then, when you do it, is it worth the fact that a main thing that your accomplishment will achieve is to dredge up resentment about the reserve list?
I'm all in favor of them tactically nuking overpriced/hard to get singles that are subject to speculation, but I don't believe that this is how they would do it.
If they were going to make this, they wouldn't need Modern. They would just make Legacy staples more available.
They could make something like this for Ravnica duels, Dark Confidant, Sword of Fire and Ice, Tarmogoyf, and other format staples, if they chose to. I don't really know why they would. Maybe it would be fun to have a booster with maybe 5 cards that has a copy of every rare legal in Modern in the set. They could be given out for things like Game Day winners, FNM prizes, or maybe even as a reward program. Could be cool.
Eventually Modern will run into the same supply problems as Legacy, so Wizards will have to reprint the dual lands, Bob, Tarmogoyf, Isochron Scepter, Aether Vial etc. I suggested in their forums that they make a reprint set legal only for Modern, and other people have done the same.
Standard: Superfriends!
Legacy: Nic Fit / Pod
Pauper: Delvar; Tron; Flicker Stuff
Commander: Riku ("Some weird doubple spell thing happened"); Keranos ("I did a Gatherer search for 'random' and 'flip a coin.'"); Superfriends!
They could make a 150-200 card set of older staples for Modern and charge $10 a pack and they would sell. That being said I could see them doing this like they did the foil packs for Alara.
Almost all of the non-banned cards in Modern are potentially reprintable in large enough numbers to lower their price should the need arise.
The two exceptions are Tarmogoyf and Jace 2.0, and those two may eventually force some very uncomfortable decisions to have to be made at WoTC.
How so? Would anyone (other than hoarders) really complain if they put a JTMS in Jace VS Chandra 2: Electric Boogaloo? How about Tarmagoyf in the Green Meanies event deck for the Modern format? There's no reserve list stopping them, so wizards can do whatever they want to keep prices manageable while making profits themselves.

I don't like Mythics much either, but realize that petitioning for their removal on a third-party forum is about as effective as eating soup with steak knife.

How would you make an appealing paper MED set while complying with the Reserve List?
Why make the comparison to the reseved list? They could make a masters set using 8th forward and no one would complain. In fact doing so would make the format more accessable than Legacy & Vintage. They can reprint whatever on a paper master set for modern and never have to worry about angering a bunch of idiots who keep useing a hobby game like its the stock market.

This man speaks truth.
I've wanted to see a MED on paper forever, completely aside from Modern, mostly because Legacy is expensive, a lot of cards need new errata, etc. Just plain never gonna happen. As for modern, well...it's not THAT hard to scoop up packs of 8th forward, even now. That said, if a modern set came out, featuring nothing but a who's-who of staples, yeah, i'd buy 3 boxes.
I was under the impression that the entire point of having Modern as a format was to NOT have these cards in the format...?
My impression was that the entire point of Modern was to have an eternal format where you could reprint anything in order to keep the supply high enough to prevent situations where you can be forced to pay 50+ dollars a card for things like your manabase. This is the case today in other eternal formats, where the reserved list prevents any actions that could be taken to increase supply. Given that the my previous statement is true, anything not on the reserve list is on the table for a reprint, and that's the point.

Your impression is way off. 8th forward =/= anything. It equals 8th edition forward...unless they decide to reprint FoW or Shocklands in upcoming sets, the cards in the format are what they are, and will only be added to by new blocks.

That was my point. Wizards has the ability to reprint anything not on the reserved list. You'll find that there are quite a few people out there who worry about Legacy's future because there are a finite number of cards like Lion's Eye Diamond and Dual Lands, with the reserve list making it impossible to replenish supply. Modern will be a format with no cards that are on the reserved list, making it possible to not only replenish supply, but also to reprint older cards to affect the format. Whether those reprints would be carried out or even if such a practice would be a good idea is up for debate, but the main point is that Wizards has the choice to take action in the form of reprints for the health of the format. This option is less viable in a format like Legacy where you cannot reprint certain cards, regardless of their scarcity/popularity.

I'm the first person to agree with you, believe me. I am one of those Legacy fans, and I've been very vocal about a paper master's set. However, if the discussion is a master's set with regard to Modern, they have print within the confines of the format...it's just in the way the OP framed the question.
Eternal Masters- non reserve list reprints for Vintage, Legacy and Modern
Mythics - Jace 2.0 , Tarmogoyf, Karakas, Force of Will
Rares- Wasteland, Dark Confidant, Onslaught Fetches etc.
problem is they did something similar (at the time) Chronicles. That led to the reserve list. Mass reprinting has adverse effect on people who have supported the game longer and they will be careful to not put too many reprints out at one time I think- although I they would sell a ton of cards it would shatter market confidence in older cards. I would buy a metric ton of these would be a blast to draft.
Another option is a TimeShifted smaller version set maybe added too Core Set?
I think they have to get more Jaces eventually into the mix but can't through Standard set. Dark Confidant could be in Standard and be OK like the Grim lavamancer. Tarmogoyf maybe if enough yard hate but I think not likely. Maybe Jace 2.0 VS Dark Tarmogoyf- Duel Deck ? Basically outside of Fetches, Shocklands, Jace, BOB and Tarmogoyf rest is not too high ( yet). Shocklands may be reprinted soon if rumors are true.
Why would they make a "Masters Edition" to put old cards into the Modern format, when they could have just allowed cards from all sets, but made the banned list equal the reserved list plus those banned for power level concerns?
I've actually thought about this way too much, even to the point of populating an MSE file with what id put in such a set.
I could see 12 card packs (1 rare, 3 uncommon, and 7 commons, plus a premium land of some type, maybe full art) flying off the shelves for 9.99 a piece.
The only problem, aside of trying to please everyone because you can't put every modern staple in the set, is the fact that this would completely overshadow anything else out. When does wizards have a time where nothing is going on (either hype building or the honeymoon phase of a new set) - it's all pretty close together already.
If they ever did this, and they put shocks/bob/goyf/bitterblossom/jitte/vial in it, i'd buy a case. I'd probably draft every week too.

I think if they did a set like this it could be for multiple formats but cards are eligible for formats already eligible - could include FOW and Wasteland
OR they could say everything in this set is eternal legal and add older cards that are 'safe' for Modern - this would presumably leave out FOW and Wasteland etc.
Here's how wizards will solve it.
My best friend is named Mark, he works for wizards and told me this so its totally 100% legit. Also my dad and mom work for wizards and my brother.
In 2012 there will be 2 duel decks. In spring, Goyfs Vs. Atogs, which will reprint Tarmogoyf as the mythic for the set. In Fall they'll have JTMS Vs. Koth.
The reanimator deck will have Bob, and shocklands will be in neo-ravnica. SoFI will be reprinted in a 2013 premium deck about equipment, Jitte will be in it too.
I HAVE SPOKEN, IT SHALL BE SO!
But in all seriousness, there will probably never be a "master's edition" type set. I could see them dumping staples into the coreset though. M13 could have the shocks, and some other goodies. They could also put bob in a coreset so he'd only be around for a short time.
