Anyone consider they could just sanction commander with either extended or standard cards? If they wanted the format to be popular I don't think the sanctioned events would use legacy card pools.
I don't think it's fair to say a standard deck costs $700 and then say an EDH one costs $100-300.
If you want an EDH deck that's as good as a $700 standard deck it costs more than standard. People say stuff like "Well EDH isn't competitive so you don't need a competitive deck". Ok, fine. I'll accept that as a true statement. It's true that it's pretty hard to win or even have fun with a $50 standard deck and in EDH it's definitely possible to at least have fun at that price level. However, it's still completely disingenuous to compare the price of a mediocre EDH deck to a Tier 1 standard deck and then use that data to say EDH is cheaper than standard. That is not comparing apples to apples, period.
EDH IS cheaper than standard, in my experience. The caveat is this means foregoing dual lands, which while they may be important in some rainbow-ish decks that search for forests/plains etc., in a land base of 37-40 lands having a couple 40$ land really makes a pretty insignificant improvement in your odds of winning.
EDH has lots of competitive decks that don't require the money cards. However, if you forgo Jace in Standard, blue decks are un-competitive and your options are really limited.
Commander can't be sanctioned as is, since it's actually incompatible with the CR (comprehensive rulebook).
Currently the General must be marked at all times, even when in a hidden zone. Various rules break down if there are marked cards in a zone (such as the rule for shuffling).
So there would need to be a major overhaul to either the CR or to the commander rules to allow for Commander to be brought into the offical tournament system.
* These things aren't un-doable, but would require that the Commander rules team hand over power to Magic rules. And i don't think they are willing to do that.
The "saul" pronunciation is also referring to the sun as in "solar." (Presumably, they would say "saular") So even if pronunciation is in doubt, the meaning is not.
sun in my country is sol
the sound is like sOhl or sól
dunno what sounds better in english...
If they ban things accordingly and give R and W some nice toys to play with soon, allowing every color combo a viable chance to win, then that would be fantastic. I doubt that will happen, so for fairness sake, I'd have to vote against this.
Seeing as it's still a "casual, multiplayer" format according to the announcement, and applies only to the launch party, this isn't quite what this thread was looking for.
Judging by the big price jump in all legacy cards after the announcement of commander. I am thinking that there will indeed be sanctioned tournaments for it on a large scale.
Had just as much to do with Legacy Opens as anything...
Wow, I certainly hope it just means it's a casual sanctioning... otherwise I quit the format. Seriously.
agreed. if truly sanctioned, i quit the format and possibly magic. it would be very obvious that wizards either does not get the spirit of the format, doesnt care, doesnt listen to its player base or many other things. think this has anything to do with sheldon stepping down as a level 5 judge?
I thought WotC had made it as clear as they could without a booming voice from the sky heralded by trumpet blowing angels and thunder and burning bushes that Commander will NOT be controlled by the DCI.
I mean, are you guys still debating and emo raging over this? Give me a break!
Commander IS NOT sanctioned by the DCI and NEVER WILL BE!

Clearly you don't even read the forums you post in. Please look at the top of the very page you just posted on to see an official statement by wizards regarding sanctioning the commander format.
OT: I for one think this is a terrible thing. Any Sanctioned Commander tournament, or one with a big prize, ends up being dominated by degenerate combo decks and decks that are worth upwards of 2000 dollars or more with duals and other old power cards. It happened a couple of times at my local store on casual days with no prizes, and its a terrible sight to behold.

It says casual. The Planechase and Archenemy launch parties were also sanctioned as casual events, so it makes sense that the Commander one would be, as well. All it means is that they take your DCI number just like any other casual, unrated event. There will probably be a promo card and the first 2 events counted toward Player Rewards before that was discontinued. Normally, unrated events didn't count, but Wizards probably wanted to gague the interest in the new multiplayer formats.
Can we close this thread? Everyone seems to be missing the point which is that they are only sanctioning the launch party for Commander as a way to drum up support for the format. Time and time again Wizards has stated that they are not treating EDH (Commander) like their other formats. The fact that we're arguing over it is ridiculous. They will more than likely only sanction for releases of product just like any launch party. Get over it!
