Will Gideon be a gaming card?
I believe so.
That's not official, since I'm not a WotC employee, let alone part of any decision-making processes there. And I hope I'm not breaking confidence or giving the game away by mentioning it.
Here's what little I know: When they signed me, WotC said that they'd like me to create a conflicted love-interest for Chandra. They gave me 2-3 specific specs they'd like me to include, which I'm not mentioning here, since that would be a spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the book; but if you're read the book, you know the main surprises that unfold about Gideon, so you probably can guess what those specs were.
Subsequently, WotC liked Gideon enough that they told me they were going to turn him into a gaming card. I have since seen a first-draft of the card, but was told there will be a number of changes to it. So I don't know what the final card will look like, and I forgot to ask which release set he'll be in. Obviously, none of the I've seen or heard is a GUARANTEE he'll be a card in the game, but it sounds like it will happen.
This very cool, that probably means Gideon may be in one of the sets after ZEN though. I think ZEN is pretty much set probably just being proofed and then sent to the printers.
Haven't we been told that Zendikar will have three walkers? Is that for the whole block, or just for ZEN? Sure hope to see him. He sounds kinda cool.
Who even says he'll be a 'walker? He may just end up a legendary creature. After all, it's very possible that Chandra bumps into him when she 'walks into Zendikar.
Something tells me Laura Resnick just got an angry phone call from Mark Rosewater.
We already told her that and this is her reply:

I answered a similar question about a possible Gideon card on the blog tour that WotC set up for me last week, where the PR people were also reading my answers (not to censor me, but to see how the "tour" they'd arranged was going). So hopefully I'm not violating my confidentiality clause.
In any case, as I said before, all I know is that there -may- be a Gideon card, but I don't know when or where, and I don't know what the final version will look like. (I would love to see it though, since Giden has a Really Cool Weapon in the book, if I do say so myself.)
This implies he won't be in ZEN, but possibly Worldwake ('Long'), and if not that then 'Prosper'.
While this isn't directly related to Gideon, I find it interesting that Worldwake is the speculated name for 'Long'.
I had a theory that the 'ancient civilizations' in Zendikar somehow wake up or activate themselves after some major events in 'Live'. Possibly either the arrival of planeswalkers, or a conflict or just with everyone draining these 'weird' mana sources and plundering ancient treasures.
I don't get what the whole "Umamama, WotC is upset with youuu~ Ms. Laura!" thing is about.
She said pretty straight-forward stuff. And really, is the possibility of a character's inclusion from the book into the game even such a big deal?
It's neat, but I can't imagine any sane person getting worked up over something like that.
Mark Rosewater's got more important things to worry about than a featured author giving slight hints about stuff when she's on the tour and generating further interest from fans.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Love interests are getting turned into cards now? What's next.... Edward the Vampire, Plainswalker?
That might be a good thing for everybody. If there was an edward planeswalker, the millions of girls who "love" him would go crazy and buy up magic cards in a frenzy. Wizards woudl make so much bank, they might give out two fnm promo cards for the rest of our lives.
Then if they loved us, they would do two things.
First invent a new rairty rarer than mythic for the edward card. That way the fans have to buy more packs.
Second fill the set with amazing rare's. Then the secodnary market will be flooded with cheap good rares. Or you coudl easily rip-off "trade" with the fans.
And since these fans wont be playing the game, they will want more than four edawrds, which is even better for us.
so if Prospers planeswalker happens to be Edward Cullen - Vampire Lover. i will be celebrating.
Who even says he'll be a 'walker? He may just end up a legendary creature. After all, it's very possible that Chandra bumps into him when she 'walks into Zendikar.
Because hes a walker in the book?
seriously why would they turn him into a legendary creature when his purpose is to be a Planeswalking love intrest to chandra....
Gideon was as gangster as you can get for a white Planeswalker, i'm excited.

A: I haven't read the book.
B: Thanks for spoiling it.
Anyone who read the book probably already speculated they'd make the card or at least try to. No big bust there.
And if they actually take any action against her for very loosely discussing the possibility (which again, we know nothing regarding the specifics of) I'll buy zero of the new set out of spite.

I'd quit Magic for WotC selling out to a sickening franchise.

Really? You wouldn't want to add a pic of Edward to your vampire signature?
In all seriousness, while I'm not opposed to inserting book characters into the game (See Frankenstein's Monster), I only hope the designers don't do it for the tween demographic. And we can only hope the picture of this guy isn't straight off a romance novel cover.
I'd have the artist pretty much make him the magic-using version of Indiana Jones. I know that sounds cliche, but some of you know what I mean by this, since you've seen his book description and all that. The comparison applies, there's really not much more I can say there.
I don't think this is that big a deal. I mean, it's useful information, but it really doesn't give anything away that wasn't incredibly likely anyway (people have been speculating on a Gideon card for a while).

Where did Worldwake come into existance? and Link. if it's true then i need to do some research.
Gideon however would be a fun and intresting "walker" to show up to fight for Chandra's heart, and maybe bring some "drama" into the war that i think might show up between this Sorin and What i'm greatly speculating to be Elspeth's War.

Seconded on the request for a source. Not that I have any reason to disbelieve.
Worldwake sounds like a fantastically badass name for an expansion.

I don't doubt the man has more important things to do, but he is virulently anti-spoilers. I don't think I even need to bring up specific instances of him overreacting to spoiled things that ended up generating more interest in the game.
It was a trademark obtained by Wizards along side Rise of the Eldrazi and Garruk vs Liliana. It has been speculated as the next set after Zendikar, but as far as I've heard I don't believe its been confirmed yet.

EDIT:
@Radiozero: 'Gideon' is a perfectly valid and usable name, despite being rooted in Judeo-Christian mythology (other characters have names based on other world mythologies). He's not named after the religious group. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gideon
explain how it's ok to use his name and not God then. You can't. i see your point, but wizards can never have such an opinion

edit: I meant Planeswalker (but you get the idea)
Oddly enough, there's speculation on a vampire 'walker named Sorin.

Welcome to the Rumor Mill and its subforums. If you fear spoilers, you've come to the wrong place.
So, there will be a Gideon card at some point. Awesome. I haven't read the book yet, but its in my hands. Can't wait to read up on Gideon.
