I really like ARB's colored equipment and I hope that we can continue to see colored equipment. I would even like to see colored equipment become evergreen, in hopes that WotC could print equipment instead of auras. Not all auras, but most auras could be made better if they were just put into equipment form.
They made sense in Alara, so I'm not going to say they should never be done again... but I certainly don't think they belong in every block and should DEFINITELY stay out of Core. Nothing about them says "Dominaria".
They should DEFINITELY stay out of Core. Nothing about them says "Dominaria".
Well, nothing in the entire M10 does "say Dominaria", because the new concept of core is traditional fantasy.
I agree that they should stay out of core, but the reason is that they're multicolor cards that don't help outline each color's individual philosophy.
Yes i like them, and what does blanchwood armor sound like? An equipment to me and that would make sense as such. I think that they will do that in the future but i dont want to see it anytime soon, I have enough unscythe killer of kings to last me forever

Actually, Blanchwood Armor sounds more like a magical growth of tree-like armor around the person, which fits the definition of an aura rather than an equipment.
In all likelihood, colored equipment aren't coming back anytime soon. What I could see, and I would like to see more of, is regular equipment with colored equip costs. That doesn't break any of Wizard's rules about what artifacts usually can do, but if helps tie the flavor of a piece of equipment to a particular color in the same way that a colored mana cost would.
R&D isn't going to keep printing colored equipments because they have a policy of not letting any innovation from expansions sneak their way into Magic in general. Both Cycling and Tribal have much more reason for being evergreen than colored equipment, but neither of them are.
powerful colorless equipment like Loxodon Warhammer that creep into areas that colorless cards should not have access to, and lands like the Pain and Shocklands that usurp black's mechanics and philosophy of paying any cost--even its own life--to get what it wants (Vesper Ghoul) only add to the degeneration of the game.
Recent discussions here and elsewhere have made it clear that there seems to be a group of players who consider blue and control synonymous, as if they somehow started playing a game with four identical and "bad" colors that do nothing interesting because they just "turn men sideways" and then true, glorious blue, the only thinking person's color.

Innovations from expansions that have snuck into magic in general:
Equipment
Planeswalkers
Multicolor (perhaps not in core sets, but sure as hell in most other sets)
Legends
Double strike
Probably more but I don't feel like thinking about them. Though I agree that colored equipment's not going evergreen, just your logic isn't sound.

There's no rule that colored equipment has to be multicolored, they just didn't show up until the block that was all multicolored, so they didn't really have a choice.
powerful colorless equipment like Loxodon Warhammer that creep into areas that colorless cards should not have access to [...] only add to the degeneration of the game.
Rediculously overpriced equipment also justify some colorless artifacts' power or mechanic usurping: Oblivion Stone is a perfect example.
I'm so glad someone else sees where I'm coming from.
Example: Sword of Fire and Ice allows mono-white decks to deal burn damage and draw cards on the attack. Wasn't there recently a huge upset about how monowhite being able to draw is a violation of the color pie?
Colored equipment would allow for cool equipment to be made that did not completely violate the color pie.

This is probably the second best option. I think making equipment be an exception to the "artifacts are generally colorless" rule would be be better, but I understand that is very unlikely and thus colored equipment costs would be the next best answer.

Equipment- Started in Mirrodin. Look now.
Indesctrucitble- Been here since it was originally in Darksteel.
Double strike- Onlsuaught and Up.
Things that should be in MTG Generally
Tribal- A whole new card type needs to be a lot more then just a tribal based block from hell.
Cycling- Yes... we've had it so much we can just make it evergreen already!
A splash here, a splash there is good, but a lot isn't, at least not yet. I think it should work its way into some blocks, then most blocks, then maybe core.

Least offensive: Nightmare Lash, Banshee's Blade, and all the other regular vanilly pump your creature with a weapon type equipment.
The rest fall somewhere in between. They had to grant some pretty serious leeway in Mirrodin to actually be able to design the set. I think MaRo wrote an article about how they upped the ante for pretty much every artifact in Mirrodin by lowering the rarity of each arti in order to make rediculous usurping offensive arti's (which is stupid because rarity shouldn't justify ridiculous power level and lack of color discipline with color bleeding into colorless cards!). --end rant--

If wizards handles it tactfully I think they can add colored artifacts and equipment to blocks beyond Alara. It works, from a flavor perspective, that there would be some "Flaming sword of burning" that had red in the cost, or at least the equip cost.
I could see them playing with card similar to Nightmare lash, where the color requirement was there, but not in the cost.
If the core set is going to focus on classical fantasy elements, I think it would be a great place to introduce some common or uncommon colored equipment.
I have brought this up before in a Zendikar thread discussing how artifacts may be a theme or sub-theme atleast in Zen. Artifacts to me are supposed to be rarities that took daring souls to acquire and a lot of artifacts in magic are merely technological advancements; functionally so, opposed to aesthetically appealing artifice with thematic aesthetics and magically imbued symbolism with global consequences. Of course im being picky but there needs to be more an antiquities style set, or a sub-theme placing emphasis on the artifacts in there setting. ( I love mirrari) I think colored artifacts are more suitable for alara because artifacts to me have no "alignment" of any kind, although there abilities may bolster a specific color and/or hinder another color because of its nature, and adding color to an artifact makes it too much like all other non-artifact, non-land cards
I think they should be colorless, but with colored equip costs; anyone can find the shapeshifting-ice-blade, but only those with control of blue mana can use it...

this also makes sense.
Ice-Blade

strictly better Whispersilk Cloak if your using Blue mana, no?

I think colored equipment, literally being a color shouldn't happen outside of an artifact theme, like esper. Colored equip costs/attach costs akin to cranial plating could work, if the equipment makes sense to have a colored ability. Take this of example;
Firebreathing Staff 1
Artifact - Equipment Equipped creature gains ":symr:: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn." and "3: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn."
Equip or 3
This example works on the premise of flavor, where if you run red mana throgh it it benifits you more than if you use non-red mana.
the equip activation cost having a cheaper alternative cost for a color is great flavor, and makes for interesting games where you see blue decks running red-esque artifacts.
Colored artifacts are a new cool thing. I could see them more often and not disturbing the game at all. Old equipments like sword of fire and ice and sword of light and shadow break the color wheel. With colored equipments you can now get away with ineresting equipments without stretching the color wheel by giving a color something it shouldn't do.
Colored artifacts are a new cool thing. I could see them more often and not disturbing the game at all.
Can I stress that I am not in support of having any non-equipment artifacts be colored outside of a non-Artifact theme. There are many arguments for and against that idea, but I don't want to bring it up here.
I only want to know people's opinions on colored equipment, because this is where we see the most color bleed.
I think colored artifacts are cute in settings like Shards but unless its that kind of a setting they should be kept colorless. I do like the equipments that have color activated abilities (like the previously mentioned Firebreathing staff and Iceblade.)
Innovations from expansions that have snuck into magic in general:
Equipment
Planeswalkers
Multicolor (perhaps not in core sets, but sure as hell in most other sets)
Legends
Double strike

My statement was somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
Equipment, good call.
Planeswalkers were intended from the beginning to be an addition to Magic in general, they weren't Lorwyn cards that they said, "Cool, let's keep these guys around." The only reason they appeared in an expansion first is because, at that point, only expansions ever had new cards.
Multicolor and Legends both originated in Legends, I think, which is so old as to not even really apply to the current R&D.
Double strike is not exactly innovation, since it just is a combination of first strike and "normal strike" on the same creature, but you can count it if you want.
Someone else mentioned Indestructible which is also technically accurate.
But generally, I think you'll see that my statement is vindicated, in that we've come up with basically only one far-reaching innovation that came from an expansion since the first expansions to Magic. (Double strike is only barely innovation, and Indestructible is only mildly more innovative, and only appears rarely.)
I agree that they should stay out of core, but the reason is that they're multicolor cards that don't help outline each color's individual philosophy.
That is what gives its identity.
Esper artifacts (as well as the handful of others) are an exception. Doesn't mean they wont come back; just not as abundant as colorless artifacts.
Actually, Blanchwood Armor sounds more like a magical growth of tree-like armor around the person, which fits the definition of an aura rather than an equipment.

So the answer, it depends.
In the case of an equipment like Behemoth Sledge, yes, it should be colored.
On the other hand, random flavorful equipment that do not delve into any exclusive mechanic of any certain color are fine as colorless: Bone Saw, Leonin Scimitar, Runed Stalactite, Manaforce Mace, and Leering Emblem are great examples.
Rediculously overpriced equipment also justify some colorless artifacts' power or mechanic usurping: Oblivion Stone is a perfect example.

Mirrodin was a biiiig no no in my book. there are a vastly huge number of artifacts and equipments that violate the color pie with a rusty blade in the arse. the worst offenders being Sword of Fire and Ice, Lightning Greaves, Loxodon Warhammer, and Sword of Light and Shadow.
Least offensive: Nightmare Lash, Banshee's Blade, and all the other regular vanilly pump your creature with a weapon type equipment.
