Seeing Conflux in full now, the thought struck me.
Reborn is a combo set? Not everywhere, like Fifth Dawn (or as Fifth Dawn tried to be, anyway -BBZT--RAVAGER CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP -BZZZT- but not quite), but rather a sizeable side theme.. like a "the set is about this... or combos if that's your slice of cake."
It would make sense with the five colours showing up You know, people exploring new magic, seeing what it can all do together. Reborn is supposed to be the aftermath of the chaos of Conflux, right? The event that leaves the Shards having to deal with each other, not reaching Lorwyn's level of bliss, but that kind of acceptance and stability you at least got on Mirrodin, say. They would be trying to become 'whole' as a world again...
And what was life like on Alara before the sundering? Maybe the various cultures did get along famously. But it was aeons ago, right, so the mana shifts changed everything so drastically...
Okay maybe I have no idea where it's going for flavour. But the mechanics of Conflux make me thing "what is Conflux setting up?" after Mark Rosewater's comment in the design article. I think it's setting up a combo environment. Take a look at the card list and see the open-endedness of some of the cards in there. Maelstrom Archangel, the Transmuter, the triggers and recyclers...
It's a modest hunch. I appear to simply be the first to write it down. :\

Reborn will be a set with a missing colour - kind of a warp of a type of mana. Instead of adding more I am saying that we'll be getting less (at least for one set). Torment and Judgement did play with such an idea but not to the extreme of the removal of a full colour.
Wild guess, but five worlds die, and one is reborn, right?
I think that the five themes of the different shards die with it.
It would be strange to have Unearth dudes showing up in the one and only Alara, right?
Now that Bolas has successfully unified the Shards, maybe he can resurrect all of the other Elder Dragon Legends!
Fittingly enough, there is already a elder dragon legend for each "shard" (based on mana costs of the old cards), so with the dragons "reborn" each shard could have a mythic rare elder dragon card.
They could also reprint Draco, as he fits quite nicely in with the Domain mechanic.
Maybe instead of a 6th color, it'll be a new flavor of mana, ala snow mana.
(Though, honestly, I think if they did a new snow mana, it would be part of a larger set. Still, all signs seem to point to a new development in mana of some variety.)
Hmmm...
Maybe they'll print cards that can be played as either lands or non-lands. That's an idea they've bounced around before (IIRC, one of the other CCGs had that mechanic, and MaRo mentioned wishing Magic had been built with it).
The other thought is that it could be the oft-predicted, yet-to-materialize land-themed set.
Just a thought. Maybe the "hook" is a hybrid symbol, but of all colors. It's the death of each world individually, but it's the birth of a world with all the colors combined. A hybrid symbol of all the colors would certainly convey that. Play it off as ridiculous if you want to, but people are suggestion all WUBRG sets, so I don't think I'm being that crazy.
Then there's practically no difference between that and artifacts.

You know, I get it that people are just looking for a way to fill the holes. But they want the holes; they want to live in the holes; and they go nuts when someone else pours dirt in their holes. Climb out of your holes, people!
-Hugh Laurie, House
No, they will never do the 6th color. ... Even if they devoted a whole block to nothing but the 6th color there still wouldn't be enough cards to allow this new color to compete in older formats like Vintage ...
There was an article on wizards.com at one point about how they tested a 6th color at one point. With.. you guessed it... really powerful spells to make people consider it despite a small card pool. One of the tested cards was Mana Drain at PP.
I think it is inevitable that they will print a 6th color at some point. With domain being in Conflux, a new world being formed, and a super powerful planeswalker hanging around, I think now may be as good a time as any for them to try it out.
If the purple cards are all very powerful spells, but there were only a few of them, (ie- not enough to even fill out a deck) it actually makes things interesting... How much do you break your deck's mana to fit a few of them in? How much will a 6th color help out your domain?
They could always mix it it on Gold cards as well to make them harder to cast.
I don't think wizards would give a crap if people used the cards in Vintage. 99% of all cards never are.
Purple would never be "the same" or as common as the other colors. But if it was the "super" color, that only showed up rarely ( once every few years?) with a few cards, it would just be kind of a fun side theme. (Like slivers, or snow mana, or somthing...)
Also, purple could debut in Reborn, with Bolas forming it. His colors are blue, red, and black. If he fuses his powers together, that would make... dark purple.
Live could end up being a plane where purple mana has always existed or something... fleshing it out more. And purple makes a great poisen color as well.
An interesting throwaway line at the end of MaRo's column this morning..
"Join me next week when I learn to count to five (but unfortunately not six)."
I think it's safe to assume that "counting to five" means that his column next week will be about the return of Domain and it being made into an ability word. But it's the last bit ("...not six") that is the interesting part. It most likely refers to Barry's Land. I'm going to guess that MaRo once again tried to get Barry's Land printed in a set using Domain (ie Conflux) and failed.
Does this mean we can expect to see it surface in Alara Reborn as a way of taking Domain "to the next level". I kind of hope so. Either way we may find out next week.
Purple seems like an interesting idea although I don't see wizards implementing a new basic land type. Perhaps the spells cost Life along with colored/colorless mana to cast.
Please no more hybrid. Shadowmoor brought back hybrid a bit too soon as it is, and if Hybrid shows up in Reborn it's just going to kill everything that made hybrid cool to begin with.
I don't want to see any more hybrid cards for three or four blocks.
They wouldn't print a card reliant completely to function on something they haven't printed yet.
Steamflogger Boss? Though, it can work on it's own with other Steamflogger Boss creatures in play, there are no Riggers than can assemble Contraptions.
About Alara Reborn, I could see hybrid mana coming into the mix. Maybe cards that cost :symw::symu::symwu:, or :symwg::symgu::symwu:. Maybe even enemy-colored gold cards, though, that's nothing "new".

Something tells me that if its only one world then the theme will have nothing to do with the themes presented so far. I think it's too early for more hybrid and costs like that can be a little confusing.

Citing Future Sight as a precedent for something is just silly. Because you have to remember these cards have only been pre-printed. Surely some Riggers will assemble contraptions before Steamflogger Boss is ever printed for real.
It's like citing Time Spiral on common themes between cards or Planar Chaos on the colour pie.

I'll hold myself to this. I'll get fancy dishes and everything.
When Alara comes into play, pay life equal to 5 minus the number of basic land types you control.
Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
That way you have strategy - do I pay 5 life for my 1 drop? 4 life for my 2 drop? You boost domain to 6(maybe it shouldn't be legendary or mythic), and you have a painful but powerful mana-fixer.
What if the new land looked somthing like

that card makes me do way to much math but i like the idea. i don't think it will happen though because conflux brought the domain stuff and they probably won't touch that again for a long long time.

What about a return to the uncolored/colored hybrid spell version?
We have seen only a few of them in the shadowmore block (Flame Javelin) and it could reflect the way the colors are moving together and losing their individuality (you can pay it for it's color cost or with anything else).
Even if I would like to see purple, I don't think they would bring such a game changing thing into the third set of a block. Even as a Hook for the next set, it would just be discarded in the Alara block.
What about a return to the uncolored/colored hybrid spell version? [...]
I didn't like so much uncoloured/coloured hybrid spells, but as Socrates wrote before cards with different hybrids are nice and funny to play in limited, the only point for me is that colours should have at least 1 colour in common
e.g. :1mana::symrg::symbr: instant, this spell does 3 damages to all creatures and all players, then your opponent discard a card.
(without target, nice uh? just joking, but I hope to have explained clearly)
* It´s an all multicolor set. Colorless artifacts and lands do something with
multicolor too.
* There will be cards that fit into the original Shards-scheme, but there will
also be cards that cross over the edges of the Shards (enemy colored
cards).
* There will be no hybrid-cards in the set.
* There will be no 5-color cards or a only a small amount.
* There will be 1 Planeswalker in the set, possibly colored U/G.
This planeswalker may have 1 ability that can be played at instant speed.
Well since the rise of evil Malfergor and Bolas, The return of Progenitus I see them making Asha, Archangel of Hope. The one who orginially defeated Malfergor in the story before this to help aid Bant once again.

I agree with your 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th sentences, but not with 3rd, why no hybrid in alara reborn?
I am afraid to have a whole multicoloured set without hybrids...
I am excited to check this new bant angel which unorthodox and Floyd are talking about...
1: It ''could'' be an all multicolour set. There is good arguments for and against it. Its effect on limited, its effect on new players, its reacton by the general consumer.
2: The theme of design and its basis is ''the Shards adapting to each other''. So im guessing your write. The shards developing weapons against each other, and learning to use the new colours in small doses.
3: I doubt they would of ruled this out, considering the versatility of Hybrid. However, considering the reactions to Shadowmoor and its recent debuting in such large amounts, i could see there being no Hybrids in this set.
4: I doubt that were will be non. Especially considering that the whole reason for the originals was given as a mini-theme through Con and Arb. Especially when they are the result of a reunited Ala.
5: Erm, no. When the story and design mechaniations say there is no more PW's, and that its basically been said there wont, this is just random assumption in complete disregard to facts.
1. If it isn't an all multicolor set, then it will definitely have lots of multicolor cards.
3. Hybrid was already extensively done in the Shadowmoor miniblock. They wouldn't return that so soon. Moreover, hybrid is a very different mechanic than plain multicolor. It doesn't mix well in one block. Also, there's the rule of three: Conflux and Shards didn't have hybrid, so Reborn won't either.
5. Again, rule of three: Shards (big set) had several Planeswalkers. Conflux (small set) has 1. So Reborn should have 1, possibly more (although I doubt that).
I checked all the colors of the Planeswalkers and both green and black have only got 2 Planeswalkers. The other colors have more, up to 4 for red. So I guess the Planeswalker(s) in Reborn will be GB (not UG, as I said before). That fits the multicolor cross over scheme too.
Planeswalker - rule of 3 - argument is not valid. Because SOA and CON had Artifacts doesnt mean ARB will have them too. (It will, but the point is you cant make that assumption.)
