I don't know, but I'm less inclined to be close minded and say never. If they want magic to stay around for quite some time, they are going to have to get more and more creative with the new mechanics they introduce. Seriously, who's to say something is impossible, we have no clue what magic will look like in 3, 5, or 10 years from now. I just have a feeling future sight isn't quite as random as it may seem and one day, we may in fact see some of these crazy mechanics return. Maybe not necessarily steamflogger boss and assembling contraptions, but certainly maybe some other things.
What scares me is that your right about what your saying here Some One. They can easily come back to these mechanics later on in a few years, obviously not now because there are still people who are against it...I'm sure we'll all be surprised to see the mechanics again and of course the nay sayers may actually become big supporters. I'm not against Contraptions entirely, I just think that they need to put a lot of thought into mechanics like that and not make joke cards that should be in Un sets.
It's a little hard for them to print contraptions at this point, with it evoking so much support/protest. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sometime, they just better be worth it.
Yeah, the card was just a joke. But that doesn't mean that some designer won't think of a way to use the mechanics it hinted to in the future. For example, they could make "Contraptions" be Artifacts that can't be played from your hand or from anywhere else, they could only be played through assembling. How would that work? Well, let's say, something like this perhaps:
------
Goblin Shipwright :2mana::symr:
Creature - Goblin Rigger
:symtap:, Sacrifice a Forest: Assemble a Contraption Ship card. (Search for an artifact Contraption Ship card in your library, graveyard or hand and put it into play. You still have to pay it's mana cost.)
------
------
Goblin Carrack
Artifact - Contraption Ship
(A contraption can come into play only if it came into play through an assembling ability)

An easier way to do this would be to not have a mana cost for the contraption so it can't be played through the normal means.

I thought about that, but then all contraptions that are assembled by a specific creature couldn't have a lot of difference between their power levels, if the mana cost became included in the assembling ability. They could though not have a mana cost and have "As an additional cost, pay X when this comes into play."
While I agree that those exceedingly long discussions about whether this or that card will be in the next set aren't very interesting, speculating about how Assembling might work IF it were implemented is fruitful, and I look forward to seeing people post interesting ideas for that.

I sure don't. It's amusing when people somehow get it in their heads that SFB will ever be reprinted, and even more amusing when other people slam their heads into their keyboards trying to convince them otherwise. But when you have people that actually attempt to put brainpower towards making him and his mechanic work in the game, it's just sad and makes me lose what little faith in humanity I have left in the world. Just think, these people posting could be your kid's teachers, your mayor, a close friend or loved one, or they could very well be your president. Scary thought no?
Unfortunately, Steamflogger Boss can't be reprinted in an Un-set under the current rules. Then there'd be a black-bordered version and a silver-bordered version, and the rules state that all versions of a legal card are legal, but also that no silver card is legal. That's the same catch-22 that kept The Cheese Stands Alone out of 8th Edition (it had one card from every other set in it).
Well, basic lands have been in both un sets and with black borders. They could just print Steamflogger Boss with a black border, too.
Also, if it's a joke card, why not put it in a set made to be a joke? Of course, un sets have also triggered events in real Magic. Invasion got a cycle of djinn based on a cycle in the canceled Un 2 set. That abomination of "strictly better," Mindslaver started as an un set idea. Barren Glory also was inspired by un land. Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug inspired its own cycle as well. That's pretty undeniable proof that jokes can make their way into expert expansions since it's already happened at least 4 times.
I think people need to accept that Steamflogger Boss was just a bad joke. I have a friend who has over 50 of these darn things and thinks they'll be worth "Oodles of cash" when they "finally reprint it"
I hate to break it but Wizards officially said it was just a joke.

don't think for a second that their "official decrees" haven't been recanted in the past. they have and will continue to be. geez, what guys from R&D say shouldn't be treated as scripture. these guys are human, they make mistakes and they change their mind. the design process is a living, fluid process, and there is infinite possibility for the direction of Magic.
bottom line: never "officially" rule anything out.
I think people need to except that Steamflogger Boss was just a bad joke.
On the contrary, I think people should ACCEPTthat it was just a joke. Excepting such a fact would just keep them buying 50+ copies with dellusions.
I think it was a tasteless joke, but hey, at least it was funny while it lasted (and I'm pretty certain some un- set will include riggers or contraptions, or something similar).
And @ flaming infinity, it's happened WAY MORE than 4 times. Just look at Future Sight's futureshifted cards. Most of those concepts started out in Un-sets. Those sets (which I happen to love) also use "backwards compatibility" where previously obsoleted/banned mechanics, like throwing cards, become fresh again. Even MaRo once said something in the lines of "practically every un- mechanic can make it to black-border world, if defended correctly, and allowed for the right reasons."

lolz @ your friend. If he got them for a good price thou, what's the harm? I remember when I opened my SFB. At first I was confused to why Wizards would print an upsupported card. Then I realized it was a joke and only a joke. I told some my friends that Magic was going to return to Mirrodin soon. One guy now exclusively plays with Mirrodin block cards.

There's no real harm in it. It's actually quite nice to look at
Anyways, I think that people will eventually calm down with the "STEAM FLOGGER BOSS !?!!!?!!!!!111eleventy" topics every single rumor season when they finally realize it was a joke.
Too bad the "ENEMY FETCH LANDS!?!!?" topics won't die down anytime soon >_>

Yeah it can change. In fact I'm pretty sure it will change, but it won't be anytime soon. If Magic is still going strong ten years from now then someone in R&D will look back and go "Hey remember that old joke card, Steamflogger Boss? What if we re-printed that card and actually used it's mechanic in the new set, wouldn't that be all cool and nostalgic?". And then it will happen. So if you're prepared to wait that long to see the joke come full circle and be made into a "real" card, then have fun.

agreed. believe me, i don't expect anything of the sort. but the possibility is always there. it's why we love this game.
It would be incredibly funny if they brought back You Make the Card and someone came up with a contraption-assembling card, as seen on a number of people's sigs.
GB Elves <-man I hate this deck, it has a 50/50 matchup against Tier 1/2 but loses to jank aggro most of the time. UB Faeries <-only reason it's good is because of all those people that's still playing 5CC. WB Tokens <-so boring, there's only 2 ways to play this deck. RB Blightning <-Autopilotting you to victory 0-2 drop.
???B Super Secret Tech <-dude, this thing is nuts! 90/10 against all matchups.
Thats true these are quite common problems and a sixth color in a block set would be nice...I personally would like the sixth color just to be in an Un-set seeing its technically the "il-legal" set.

The simplest way I ever thought of is to use a keyword like forecast and/or equip that makes Contraption artifact tokens. (The comprehensive rules do tell us that Contraption is an artifact subtype.)
Pyrite Rigger 2R
Creature -- Goblin Rigger
Assemble -- ,T: Put a Contraption artifact token into play. (Assemble only as a sorcery.)
All Contraptions have "1, Sacrifice this Contraption: This Contraption deals 1 damage to target creature or player."
1/1
This covers why you'd want your Riggers to assemble multiple Contraptions, and it makes it especially synergistic for Steamflogger Boss to give your Riggers haste. EDIT: As a bonus it also powers up Moriok Rigger.
But still. I doubt that WotC will ever actually print Riggers that assemble Contraptions.
I'm surprised nobody made a changeling deck with SFB in it. It's obviously not a good card under normal circumstances, but it does power up changelings.
I don't think that deck would win any tournaments, but it would still be fun to play with.

Don't get me wrong, I doubt it too, I just think it's no harm to think of how it could be implemented. By the way, I liked your idea Even more than mine actually. I would only change the Pyrite Rigger's text to read as following:

There was once [The Pack], but no more.
Seriously though, they should merge all the Steam Flogger Boss topics and post at the top "BIG JOKE, HAVE FUN"
