i'm confused at your point polyjak. what does damnation have anything to do with what we're talking about? we were discussing how they could make it possible to draft 4 sets.
When Paul Sottosanti talked about purple as color #6, he also mentioned a number of things that WotC considered, which he put in brackets because WotC might use them in the future. Here they are:
[New card type] [new mechanic A] [new mechanic B]
I leave it up to you to guess which of those three is the most discussion-worthy, as in, could potentially make it into Lorwyn / be the "major rule broken".
I've been following this thread for a while and popped into MtG's main site today and almost died. Purple!
In Your Face PURPLE. and they almost did it too!
In reality though I think the most likely thing for them to do is add colorless instants enchantments and sorceries. It makes more sense than a new color, because it won't necessitate a new card back. And cities would work great for the "Colorless Lands"
the only thing r&d has to do so that we can draft four packs is decrease the booster size to 11 cards. 15 x 3 = 45. 11 x 4 = 44 (okay, so we're one card short but that doesn't really matter does it?). this is just further proof that a four set block is a plan to decrease the booster size to the standard of other games. i am deeply saddened but the truth has to come out.
i donn think they have to decrease the cards quantity in boosters in light of Major Rule Breaking in Lorwyn and in light of an article bout Purple Colour ..
think ...
if u have 6 colours instead of 5 - its goin to be less cards of particular colour in each pack ... so they have to increase number of packs in order fo us to get our limited decks paccked ...
Magic has been always a Player vs. Player game. Why not turn it into a semi-RPG game where multi-players take turns in defeating a powerful mad mage or a gargantuan dragon where a dungeon master governs all gameplay (just like in WoW's Onyxia's Lair, I think).

This might be a path the MTG goes down in the future, but I sorely hope that it is not part of the next block, or any block for that matter. What I love about Magic is its spontiniety. All you need to play are two deck, a relativly flat surface, and a friend. You can play a quick game of Magic while eating lunch, sitting in study hall, or even waiting in line to get into a prerelease. Something like what Rainbird said sounds like fun, but by nature it requires a lot more preparation. You can't jus sit down and play whenever and whereever you feel like it. You can't just sit down and play a game of D&D. Like I said, MTG might go down that road, but I hope it is more like an offshoot (like FFXI should have been :argh:).

Because that's a completely different game. I mean, why not turn baseball into a game with one ball where players try to kick it into the opposing teams net?

Just make it a varient format where everyone gangs up on one player who uses special rules, like 10 life per opponant, and hand size 10 and a bigger deck, and 5 copies or something like that. Maybe they can go every other turn, or its like two headed giant. The designers don't need to do anything special for it, so I doubt we would see a set designed for that.

It's kind of hard to kick a baseball reliably, although I'm sure with practice they'd get really good at it. Where would you place the nets? I'm guessing behind 1st and 3rd base. The outfield area would be free reign where players could bash each other with the baseball bats with no red card infraction.
Wait, wait, wait. I know the next set is called lorwyn and that it was code-named "Peanut, Butter, Jelly", but a bunch of the last few posts have been talking about a 4 expansion block as if it is confirmed fact. Did I miss something or is this simple speculation?
I've been thinking about it and keep going back and forth but my final opinion on the "Major Rule Broken" statement is that it was referring to the "preprints". We will see preprints. It is likely that we will have a new keyworded mechanic on a *single* card (a keyword that appears only once!). This will "seem very strange" to us (unless we're, you know, *us*) until we open the following expansion and see that it's the theme of the next block or some such. I could easily see that and can see why they would label that as a "Major Rule Broken". It gives this block a nice symmetry and is quirky enough to keep us rumormongers speculating right up until we see the block it belongs in.

Someone saw a release schedule for the next year. In the summer of 2008, a set codenamed Sandwich will be released. Due to the obvious connection in naming, most people are taking it as a fair assumption that this set will be part of the Lorwyn block.
It's not speculation that there will be a fourth set codenamed Sandwich next year. Its relationship to the Lorwyn block, if any, is speculation at this point, but it is based on a seemingly obvious naming clue.
The codename "Sandwich" has been confirmed for a set to be released in July 2008 (in the "Coldsnap" slot). It has not officially be confirmed as the fourth set in the Lorwyn block, but it seems reasonably likely.
How about a new card type like Events that change how certain things work such as:
Global Warming 3R
Event
(Events cannot be countered)
Global Warming can only be played if there are 4 or more mountians in play
all plains become islands
all forest become swamps
any player may play BBBB or UUUU to destroy Cardname "screw the environment, I'm cold NOW!" - Drew Carey
or maybe:
World War 3RG
Event (Events cannot be countered)
All Players may declare attackers during any opponent's attack phase
If 5 or more creatures enter the graveyard during one turn, Destroy World War
or
Feast for Enemies 3W
Event (events cannot be countered)
Green Creatures gain protection from blue and black
Blue Creatures gain protection from red and green
Red Creatures gain protection from blue and white
White Creatures gain protection from black and red
Black Creatures gain protection from white and green
If there are more than 4 creatures of one color in play, destroy Cardname
I know they're very much like enchantments, but I could see some type of variation of this...

This goes along with my "Akroma, Angel of Global Warming" idea from a few weeks back...
It's already been stated, dozens upon dozens of times, that they will be breaking a design rule in a negative way. They will be taking something away, not adding anything, Please, people, read the damn thread.
who has 420 posts? but yea i really have no idea about what they are going to do. i have heard some pretty cool theorys but i have also seen some that are so dumb i want to slap someone.
It's already been stated, dozens upon dozens of times, that they will be breaking a design rule in a negative way. They will be taking something away, not adding anything, Please, people, read the damn thread.
So they are only allowed to break one rule? Why of course, this cannot be the 4 set block as that is not a negative, you know NOT DOING THREE again is a positive, not a negative....
my guess is that it is going to be a block theme that they have never done. Looking at Mark Rosewater's Interblock design theory. (Spirits in Ravnica, Sapprolings and multicolors in TS) The dramatic change toward mono color that time spiral (and now planar chaos) has made look more promising leads me to believe that after everything is all screwed up by planar chaos, Lorwyn will be heavily mono colored themed. Cards will likely be more powerful if you only play one color.(Urborg Stalker and Zealots en-Dal)
it is unexplored territory and goes well with TS and coldsnap, while fixing the color pie mess of PC and reviving mono color after Rav block's heavy multicolorness.
Lightning Storm Coldsnap uncommon. Lightning Storm breaks several major "rules" at once. In addition to being the only spell with an activated ability, it's one of only twenty cards whose Oracle text refers to the stack - and of those, it's one of only seven to do so outside reminder text. Of those, only two were originally printed that way (along with Mirari and Radiate, which were retemplated along the way).
Is this their hinting at things to come like how they did for PC planeshifts?

It will still be included in the original set but it will be released during the time a core set would have been relesed.
