We had the return of merfolk in Timespiral, and with it the return of Lord of Atlantis. However we did not get a 1-drop merfolk. Is this a clever plot by wizards to prevent blue from swinging for 2 damage second turn? (Drifter il-Dal says no.) But it doesn't change that fact that as of yet there is no 1-drop merfolk.
Will we see a 1-drop merfolk in Lorwyn?

When I was young, the smallest trick of light,
Could catch my eye,
Then life was new and every new day,
I thought that I could fly.
I believed in what I hoped for,
And I hoped for things unseen,
I had wings and dreams could soar,
I just don't feel like flying anymore.
Well, there are fourteen blue Merfolk in the name and number crunch. Since Faeries fly they will mostly be 1U at very least. So Elementals, Merfolk and Shapeshifters will be the only one for U nomination. Well, I suspect there will be any 1cc Merfolk. It's not impossible since the shapeshifter and elemental will have few one drops in blue. Some tribe needs to have one drops. Merfolk it is.

Tay, that's not evolution. It's metamorphosis. Evolution means descent with heritable modification – individuals cannot evolve, unless they're Pokemon.

Actually, I would prefer a one drop Shapeshifter (even a vanilla one) with Changling because that not only works for Merfolk, but it helps Krovikan Mist too. A 2/2 flyer for 1U? Yes please.

Defenitly true! Very possible too, funny actually that Krovikan Mist in an other tribe was very more dangerous then it is as an illusion. It's actually one of the cycle of Heedless One, Nameless One, etc. This one is actually quite better then Nameless one, if there were only splashable low mana illusions and not the Meloku tokens!

I hope to see a good merfolk using the "reveal" mechanic.
Something like:
Tiderunner U
Creature - Merfolk
As an additional cost to play Tiderunner, reveal a merfolk card from your hand or pay 3.
Whenever Tiderunner attacks, target land becomes an island until end of turn
Shroud

I think that to obsolete Merfolk of the Pearl Trident, they'd have to make something actually exciting so players would accept the change. Also, Wildfire393's example with the "reveal" mechanic doesn't obsolete anything, and is definitely exciting. Seems quite likely they'll use this mechanic here. We've seen it on two 1-drops so far if I'm not mistaken.

Let's hope its at least on par with Sage of Epityr. If it can replace itself (draw a card, or a few by the time it dies) or it has a great CIP ability, I will be very happy!
I am hoping it has a CIP ability rather than an in-play ability, because I would like to Sacrifice it to Cabal Therapy. Maybe I'm a bit greedy....

While netdecking and testing VileHorror i thought about Biorhythm. Sure its really expensive, off-color and crappy but still you're always the one with creatures while playing VH. That made me think.

That one is good. A bit too good maybe. I think it will be something like this:
Bla u
Creature - Merfolk
Whenever Bla gets tapped, target land becomes an island until end of turn.

That's more likely.

Turning a land into an island is tek against Urborg decks. Do it in response to tendrils, and if you know somebody who plays Korlash, it's good against him too.
Earlier in the rumor seasin I remember something about a U 1/1 that you could tap to mill each opponent one card. Did that get proven fake or something?
Yeah, it was, hasprospy, or maybe I'm accusing him falsly. Well, like he still has got any honour left...

funny how people will speculate on completley diverent cards, when Hydro confirmed that there will be a 1 mana merfolk in the set, that can turn a land into a basic land of your choice...
speculate on that
my thoughts
U
fishtail
whenever fishtail deals damage to a player, you may turn one of his lands into a basic land of your choice until eot

wording is off, and is pure speculation..
could be a reprint of tidal warrior though..

It doesn't make a lot of sense for it to trigger off combat damage--the whole point of changing land types is to get your islandwalkers through. Maybe if it turns into an island permanently it would work.
It can be a Merfolk that change land type if it becomes tapped. Which can be better if, cause you can attack with it.
Or a tidal reprint
A plotter seems unlikely at the cost of 1.
Hope there will be more Merfolk of 1cc though. Building a deck with only four 1cc creatures is hard. Plus hydro only talked about the card he knows giving island walk. He did not exclude other 1cc Merfolk.
Edit: I forgot the best! The one chronoplasm told me once. A Shapeshifter for u. Maybe it can be a cycle with blue flash, white flying, green deathtouch, red haste, black eurm, something.

The difference between that and tidal warrior is that if you draw too much blue you can use it go turn one of your lands into a Plains. Merfolk are become multi-colored you know, it wouldn't be a bad move.

With Lord of Atlantis in TS I don't think were gonna see a 2 power 1 mana merfolk unless it has a huge drawback.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
I'd prefer Tidal Warrior. Looks like it will have great synergy with Lorwyn Merfolk, not to mention LoA.
