contraptions was a joke. A cool joke. A joke that they may even elaborate on.
HOWEVER, if they do actually plan to elaborate on it, it will be YEARS away a year at the very least, most likely more.
A joke... kind of like...
UN sets!
i herby call it!
the next UN set will be Unassembeled...
It will have special contraptions cards in the set that are kind of like the transformers cards that wizards has (kind of like the pirates game where you make 3d boats) but your riggers can make great big contraptions that do things when you build them....
Instead of the 3d thing, I could see the contraptions working more like the B.F.M, but with different interchangeable left and right sides.
I love the un-sets, but this 4 "real" sets a year thing makes me think we won't see a third one for a long while.
Those pirate ships are neat looking. They remind me of those foam airplanes I sometimes used to get when I was a kid. you'd have to punch them out, then string the rubber band propeller on them, then launch them at your brother at point blank range...now I know why I didn't get them often.
I could see a contraption/assembly subtheme in a third un-set. The problem is that Steamflogger Boss would be long and forgotten by the time the set came out so it wouldn't be funny anymore.
They would probably scrap the whole thing for something fresh that would play nice with the current block(s).

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
I actually think it would be funny if they printed a cycle of Assemble related cards in the next un-set but none of them actually use assemble or say what it does. That might aggravate players with a poor sense of humor though.

This would also be amazingly hilarious, I'd laugh my ass off every time I saw one and probably build a casual "Things that reference Assembling" deck, but I'd also be among those that were pissed it wasn't printed
I hate to break it to you but contraptions and assembling will never be. Why? Because wizards has just as little clue of what it is and does as us! I think they just wanted to throw random phrases at us and make it sound like it really meant something, but the phrasing is so bad and complex to build around that it is impossible to make them. You try to fit assembling and contraptions with all the errata. That's the main reason why Wizards openly admitted it was a red herring. They didn't want assemble to become popular because they have no idea nor will they ever be smart enough to make it! I have yet to see a sensible, interesting idea for assembling and contraptions. The only things I've seen is redundant usage of the terms (i.e. assemble can often simply swapped with "put into play"). I'm sure that if they ever figure out how to make assemble, they will.

While I actually agree with you (for once) on most of this, I do have to ask, what "errata" are you speaking of?
However, I can see wizards making assemble eventually, if for no other reason than to satisfy the minority who is constantly complaining about its lack of existance. And the only reason they have "as little clue as we do" about them is that they haven't tried to design assembling contraptions. Yes, it would probably end up being an ability word that would just be interchangeable with "put into play", but probably have some connotations to it (the cards put into play are non-creature artifacts, with the contraption subtype and whatever that implies. And yes, it probably would imply something, the only two existing artifact subtypes are equipment and fortification, both of which imply something).

The idea I had was that Contraptions would be artifact tokens, distinguished from normal tokens by the fact that they actually had mana costs, and would be in a block that had a theme of effects that looked at the casting cost of permanents. Attached is the sample card I created. Anyways, I think it's completely doable in a dozen innovative ways, and I wouldn't at all be surprised to see it eventually, or at the very least in the next un-set.

I wouldn't put it past them to do contraptions some day.
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them, but the idea is out there. One day they might stumble across the right idea to make contraptions work. They probably don't have any idea now, but someday they may figure it out. That was part of the joke of the card.
Two years ago if someone told us that they would fix the Snow mechanic, or make Planeswalkers, or even revisit forgotten stuff like flanking or poison, I doubt many would have believed it, but all that got made.
Unassembled is a good name for the third "un-" set. I compliment the original poster, graffd02, on the idea.
Another good name, I think, would be "Unscrewed."

Woah, haoban3, where did that art come from?! it's really cool and probably got nothing to do with mtg.
I like that idea, I say either that or unscrewed. Here's my take on the art.

yeah that would be pretty awesome too...
but think of this.
you have a card thats a slightly thicker than the others but still thin enough you cant tell the difference from other the cards, 1 per pack. think of it as a puzzle card. theres an outline of black border and then inset on the card are cutout peices of the contraption when you take the pieces out underneath is a new card that has the statistics for the contraption you just made...
I like the idea of contraptions being punch out card board. The only problem is that would rasise production costs which would discourage wizards. Still, it would be interesting if they ever did it. I wonder if the card gets special planswalker abilities when yoou punch it out?
Wait, how could you unassemble a contraption? This punch out idea may not be so great after all. Nothing like a card you can only use once. Of course, they did this with orb of confetti and the black lotus redo.
"If a rigger you control would assemble a Contraption, it assembles two Contraptions instead." I despise this card's rare status BTW, but if it were to ever inspire any future cards, 'assemble' would have to imply some grouping of permanents that are already in play, therefore not 'put into play'. One example could be, "Tap, Assemble: Target artifact you control with converted mana cost 1 or less loses all abilities and becomes an equipment attached to another target non-creature artifact you control. The equipped artifact becomes a 'Creature-Contraption' with power/toughness equal to its converted mana cost plus 1. Play this ability only any time you could play a sorcery." This would also necessitate a good definition for 'Contraption' simply to somehow shorten this mess. But I do think that if assemble was to ever work, it'd borrow inspiration from Licids. Would make for some funny Licid jokes in an un-set at least

"Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter, Hymn to Tourach. If there is an unholy trio in Magic, this is it. These three cards have been wreaking havoc and crushing dreams for over a decade. They're like the New York Yankees, except powered by black magic. Oh, wait... never mind." Chris Millar House of Cards
Wait, I thought it was the players with a poor sense of humor who keep bringing contraptions up?
I think it's the players who are too annoyed to explain to everyone else that it was a joke. You know, those who go, "Grr, it's a joke! n00b! Must kill now!" as opposed to those who go, "Haha, sorry dude, it was a joke."
Mmmmm, Steamflogger Boss may be a perfect UN card, it fits in everything, wizards said that this cards was a Joke and the Un sets are like Jokes, but thinking about this and reading a lot the card a got a theory bassed in the flavor text:
Maybe you enter a mini game with your opponent of "gato" (I don't know the name of that game in english), and the player that wins do any effect.
Its called tic-tac-toe in english. It seems unlikely, but since when has that stopped WotC from doing something in an Un-set. Good theory:).
They made B-I-N-G-O, a Tick-tac-toe card isn't so much of a stretch in un-land.
I don't know how interesting a tic-tac-toe card would be, since it's really easy to force a draw in that game.
Even with the draw thing, it's a good idea (heck, a draw could be part of the trigger condition). I really hope that this new mini-block structure doesn't stop wizards from doing a 3rd un-set sometime in the future, although it seems likely that it will.
I also hope they make contraptions one day. Right now steamflogger boss is a joke rare because it does nothing, and they admitted it was a joke, but I think it'd be even funnier if they actually made it useful.
Heck, I remember when Atog was regarded as the wort card ever, there's some hope for almost every crap card.
Well, I really hope that Steamflogger Boss became a good card, even if its a Un-card, and with my theory of the tic-tac-toe it seems possible, putting two X's or O's assure a win.
They need to put squire in an Un-set,....and Norin the Wary that's a big piece of crap.

Are you kidding me? That would make it more funny. Humor comes from the unexpected. This sort of joke isn't that uncommon in MTG either. For example Hyalopterous Lemur and Viscid Lemure, reprinting Frozen Solid in Coldsnap, and Deep Analysis and Masticore.
I actually think it would be funny if they printed a cycle of Assemble related cards in the next un-set but none of them actually use assemble or say what it does. That might aggravate players with a poor sense of humor though.
