WotC, like most of the business world, operates on a five-year plan. That is to say, they anticipate their goals and activities for the upcoming five years in hopes of better preparing to meet those goals and succeed as a company. In R&D's case, this means thinking about what is going to happen in upcoming sets and blocks. This kind of thinking was an integral part of the Future Sight set.
So, limiting yourself to the kinds of things R&D thinks about (major block themes / rules changes / game events), try to predict the next five years of Magic, starting with Lorwyn. Use what we've seen in Future Sight, plus your knowledge of R&D from mtg.com and elsewhere to give it your best guess. In particular, order matters, so state the year / month you think something is going to happen.
Here's my speculation:
2007-08: Lorwyn will be to Onslaught what Ravnica was to Invasion - the "tribal 2" block. There will be four sets, and each set will focus on a different tribe. Lorwyn will be elves, Morningtide will be rebels. Tribal cards will play a big role. Tribes will transcend color lines, so expect black / blue elves, etc. The Onslaught fetchies will be reprinted in Lorwyn and the enemy-color fetch cycle will come later in the block. Cards with "Equip elf" (or other tribe) will come about, but bearing regular equip abilities as well. Provoke will return.
2008-09: The next block will be a land block, basically "Mirrodin for lands", but it will take place on a new plane. One big development that will take place with the large expansion is that basic lands will no longer be named "Island", "Mountain", etc. but will have unique names (they will still be basic islands / mountains, though). Return of snow mana or copycats, that care about the source of the mana or the way the mana is accessed. Cards like Imperiosaur will come around. The "basic" supertype will be applied to non-lands for the first time. Kicker will return. Combo will rule. Bannings may ensue.
2009: Eleventh Edition will seemingly hose multicolor (weaker duals), yet it will introduce gold cards into the Core Set at the same time. The reserved list will be abolished in favor of a "retired cards" list that will be much smaller, but with clearer justification for when/how a card goes into retirement or off retirement. Morphling will be the Eleventh Edition poster child.
2009-10: The next block will be a deceptively multicolor monocolor block. That is to say, there will be gold cards, but there will be very little mana fixing. Cards like Patrician's Scorn will be the order of the day. Spells and permanents will care about the color of spells you play. We will finally learn how to "assemble a contraption", but only because a promotion on mtg.com in 2007-08 let the players create the mechanic. Cycling and imprint will return.
2010-2011: We will get another "culture" setting, like Kamigawa, only this one will be Aztec-themed, as in Nacatl War-Pride. This will not be a "top-down" design like Kamigawa, though. Rather, the set will be the "combat" set, that adds new dimensions to the combat step and rewrites some of the rules for attacking and blocking. Planeswalker cards will finally see the light of day. Creatures will be able to have life; you will now have a power and toughness (even though they will both typically be zero). Trample will become obsolete.
2011: Twelfth Edition will see a completely new suite of abilities in the Core Set. Protection and first strike will be relegated to the dustbin of history. Regeneration will be rebuilt from the ground up. Cycling will make the Core Set. The Rav duals will be reprinted. There will not be a single card in Twelfth Edition that was also in Limited Edition Alpha.
2011-2012: WotC will reverse their tune about co-mingling Magic and D&D, and will in fact release a D&D themed block to compliment the first campaign setting for the 4th Editon of D&D, which will actually be a Magic setting, not Forgotten Realms or anything like that.
2007-2012: Jackal Pup will be reprinted. Sometime.
2007-2012: There will be another color pie shakeup, with white and red as the primary benefactors. Planar Chaos will be no indication of how this shift will actually occur. I do believe the speculation is now that Relentless Rats will become a Basic Creature - Rat. Which would make the rats a lot cleaner, as one word replaces eleven words (and opens up the possibility of flavor text) But as I'm typing this I just saw that... no they didn't do that. (As the picture of the 10th edition Rats indicates.) Wow.
I don't care for the reserved list in general. I think its stupid because of one good reason. Because eventually, no matter how good the card stock and printing is, the cards will eventually decay and dry up. Thats why non-Wizards run Vintage and Legacy tourneys allow 5-10 proxies, because only a small number of players could afford to play the format otherwise. I think that there will be a day where the power nine become promos of some kind. But the reserved list will stay around for... ever. Even though the reserved list is stupid. But there are cards that should fundamentally never be printed again.
Jackal Pup is better than Savannah Lions. Why? Its in red. Thats why. And red should not have the best creatures. Mogg Fanatic is still only a 1/1.
The complete absence of abilities like protection and first strike is just completely dumb. Cycling may or may not make it into a base set. I sincerly hope 5-10 cards make it into a set one of these days.

Here is what is wrong with the set 10th edition... Since the Coldsnap color hoser cycle was put in 10th... that probably means that the last two Circle's of Protection are probably gone. I thought White was supposed to be the color of enchantments. So I guess Story Circle and Ivory Mask(hopefully) (plus Aura of Silence) are the only good enchantments now in the Core.
D&D and Magic... well, its already happened in a way. The legends in Legends were the names of D&D characters. But Magic and D&D are two very different games (one of which DOES NOT APPEAL TO THE KIDDIES) That game is D&D. I'm sorry. An 8 yr old can grasp Magic, but D&D is WAY beyond their comprehension lvl.
One thing I think that will come back is Affinity for Lands. It has limited design space, but a card like this:

Hoses control decks something fierce, but it will never kill anything. But that also is very limited design space. This could be more accurately convaied as a creature that cant deal damage to creatures.
It seems a bit premature to speculate beyond the next 2 blocks (since wizards themselves probably don't have anything concrete and any number of designers and developers could change and thus alter the precepts of the upcoming set).
I do think that while blocks will still have recognizable themes, they will never be wound as tight as Onslaught or Mirrodin (tribal!; artifact!). Creating a Standard environment based around 'a sea of tier 2 cards' has proven to generate diverse metas where knowledge of your deck and how it works can pay more than hyper-metagaming as well as encouraging rogue strategies because nothing is overwhelmingly dominant.
Llorwyn will be a 4-set block, which despite our apparent foreknowledge will still be novel and cool when it actually happens (and create a unique drafting experience, either with 4 packs or with the base set actually replaced by the 4th). While thematically it will return to 'High Fantasy' it will still retain some cyberpunk imagery (as villains perhaps).
I won't comment on the block after Llorwyn as we have no clues at all yet, except to reiterate that Magic design, thanks to the current R&D, will not be easy to shoe-horn as 'the artifact block' or 'the tribal block'. While there may be a block with emphasis on these themes, it will never be as linear as Mirrodin or Onslaught again, even if one of these themes is something new like a land theme.
Further, after this flurry of new card types we will not see anymore for quite some time, both to allow the new types to seep into the game and to allow them to retain their novelty.
I do hope to see Hybrid mana again in less than 5 years

I think they will have those themes, they just won't be marketed as obviously as all the sets between Invasion and Fifth Dawn were marketed.
They could have called Kamigawa the "legendary block", but they only made that a small part of their marketing strategy. Ravnica could have been "it's multicolor again!" but they put more emphasis on the guild model rather than the simple fact that multicolor came back. TS block WAS the "time block" with mechanics like suspend and split second that were very temporal in the way they worked, but they marketed it more heavily as a nostalgia block.
All in all, I think there will continue to be guiding principles in design. That doesn't mean that the blocks all have to be a one-trick pony. I don't think they're going to market Lorwyn as "Onslaught 2", but some other way entirely, such as just marketing Lorwyn itself as "the elf set". But, for example, I do think that "lands" and "combat" will be major block themes in the near future.
My speculation about white losing first strike, protection and mass destruction should be taken in the context of me also saying that white will benefit from another major color pie shift (and get more than just tutors), and that a "combat" block would entail many new combat abilities, many of which could go into white, and many of which would go into twelfth, as I predict it. In other words, whatever white lost would be replaced with something better.
To me it seems cards like Root Maze and Hurkyl's Recall from Xth indicate that we'll see some artifact heavy block soon.
Maybe, however, the more likely reason is because of the extended rotation in October. Some good affinity hate cards are going to be needed then. This is because unlike most decks in extended Affinity will only gain from the rotation. Since loses virtually zero of its cards, while most other decks lose a great deal or become unplayable.

•Players having power and toughness
•System more combat-focused, but no trample, first strike, or protection
•Setting based on another product line, possibly in a different format

2025: Magic/Yu-Gi-Oh cross-over. Blue-eyes White Dragon dominates all formats, and is promptly banned by the DCI.
2051: Porn block is released, and becomes Magic's best-selling set of all time. Not so much due to the porn, but rather because everyone is curious to see what Rebecca Guay's watercolour pornography looks like.
2052: Russians finally leave, and take their cards with them. Russian cards go up in price.
2060: WotC cuts the colour White from Magic, "No one ever played with White cards, anyway," says Magic Dictator-for-Life Aaron Forsythe.
2079: WotC keywords mana symbols, supertypes, P/T and artist names.
2080: Mark Rosewater writes an article about the 54th player-type, 'Dirk', the type of magic player that thinks different names for different types of magic players is retarded.

The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
I think there will be a "tribal" block soon but tribal will not be
pushed as the main block theme to the extent that it was in Onslaught. Race and class will both matter, and they will matter differently. This will not involve a change in the rules to officially distinguish race from class. But for example, there could be a cycle of equipment where each conveys a class upon its bearer but none that do the same for races. Some kinds of static creature abilities might be exclusively race based, while Tribal auras might be exclusively class based. There will be creatures in hooded cloaks with only a class; their race will be hidden. Humans will be absent from the block, or nearly so, since the aversion to human tribal cards will remain, but there will be a desire for every creature to belong to a race which is being used for tribal cards.

the 5 Year Plan is based on data from pre-Invasion as well. But Onslaught doesnt have a clear line up there.

The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.

pushed as the main block theme to the extent that it was in Onslaught. Race and class will both matter, and they will matter differently. This will not involve a change in the rules to officially distinguish race from class. But for example, there could be a cycle of equipment where each conveys a class upon its bearer but none that do the same for races. Some kinds of static creature abilities might be exclusively race based, while Tribal auras might be exclusively class based. There will be creatures in hooded cloaks with only a class; their race will be hidden. Humans will be absent from the block, or nearly so, since the aversion to human tribal cards will remain, but there will be a desire for every creature to belong to a race which is being used for tribal cards.
Magic is already heavily influenced by Dungeons and Dragons.
