I was ready, just like everyone else, to embrace the purplies as Type 2 legal, but then Caranthir spoiled Disenchant as a purple, and my beliefs were shattered.
It's over. No more purplies in Type 2.
However, I do think purplies will make for fun limited cards, and maybe it will get new players involved in older formats. You can definitely see that not all of the purplies are Spikes, and in fact, a lot of them have a tremendous amount of flavor for the casual crowd.

If you can accept Psionic Blast, you can accept Disenchant. If you can't accept either, then well I guess you don't think they're legal
I think it's obvious that they have to be standard legal myself. But then again, I knew it was obvious that there were going to be 422 cards in the set from that first email, and people still debated that to the bitter end.
The facts are, unless the rules are changed, these cards must be standard legal. Also, WotC would want people to get cards that everyone(i.e. even people who only play standard FNM) can play with in packs. And then, there's the point that while some of the choices are surprising, there's nothing in the reprints so far that's too powerful for standard.
Whispers was the nail in the coffin for these being legal. No way they are gonna reprint that.

I think that that undefined would be the perfect power for the flying spaghetti monster.
Player A: "I hit you for an undefined amount of damage."
Player B: "I shock FSM."
Player A: "Does it do undefined damage?"
Player B: "No."
Player A: "Then it doesn't die. Take your damage *****!"
Player B: "How?"
I'm pretty sure they'll be standard legal, there's no point to reprint cards in a new set that won't be legal in standard...it kind of defeats the purpose of type 2 and new sets.

I know why they haven't announced it yet. It's because they will be legal.
They would have nothing to loose if they weren't going to be legal in type 2, because it wouldn't effect the current environment. It would just devalue the older cards (another reason they will be legal).
However, if they were going to be legal, WoTC knows about leaks, and they wouldn't want people taking advantage of people who don't know about the reprints in the weeks preceding the pre-release. "I'll take these older cards that no one plays anymore off your hands..." knowing they'd be worth more money when they are suddenly type 2 legal. But keeping hush-hush about it, its making it easier for people not on the pulse of magic info to avoid feeling upset about trading (now) very valuable cards away. Since its up in the air, no one is going to move very much on the rumors, unless they wanted the cards anyway.

It is a very viable idea. Worth noting: there will be some speculators; look at Time Vault. When its reerrataing was announced, it spiked up to $150 on SCG; when it turned out it wasn't a new piece of power, the price crashed. SCG is not exactly my favorite site for stuff like this and the purple stuff. I suspect at least some of the reason they aren't selling the cards now is the hassle; essentially, if they are legal, then they're well off, but if they aren't but speculators bought out all their Shadowmage Infiltrators, they might have a hard time getting them for extended season.
EDIT: The other reason is, quite simply, they don't want to annouce "Hey, guess what! You're going to get a bunch of cards which you can't play with at FNM!" By having the old frames, though, they'll be readily identiable as illegal.

I'd love input and advice!

Maybe they are legal in every format they are now...
