It would be awesome if that card is actually Tolarian Ruins... noticed how the card depictes a FLOOD of blue, and it seems likely that the name is probably what we all think.
Sadly, I don't think blue is likely to get any abusable mana source.
Most likely interacts with artifacts. Graveyard -> top of library seems doable, go go Ironfoot!
Question: Where does it state that the card has to produce mana? Academy Ruins implies that the campus is broken aka in ruins, out of service... kaput. To me that implies it may not tap for color at all. We shoudl be able to comfortably state it should be Legendary, but other than that who knows? At best we could hope, or not hope depending on one's preferences, for a card like: Academy Ruins Legendary Land :symtap:: Add to your mana pool for each artifact you control. That does shrink the school's powerlevel a bit, though it gives Legacy and Vintage formats another card to salivate over and would make a Mirrodin-laden Extended unfun again. But how prevelant are artifacts in Standard? I can think of Signets and Jitte, and the Jitte will be 1.X bound when Spiral becomes legal. Add in the chages Kamigawa brought in pertaining to the Legend rules where instead of an opponent playing the first one, thus making the one you just drew a dead card it now becomes a kill card. - Arn't paradoxes fun? The card I have above is obviously still way too degenerate. Nevertheless, think about the card name again. Ruins, the sheer fact that it might do something similar in spirit to some falvored ascpet of the original isn't so far fetched, but the Academy is in ruins, read here doesn't work (at least properly) any more. Tolarian Academy produced based on the number of artifacts you control. Well in ruins I'd throw out the notion of it tapping for color altogether. If it taps for anything I'd bet on it being colorless. I'd also not expect it to be dependent on anything in play since again the location is in shambles. The card that comes to mind is actually a variation of another card's abilities but still ties in artifacts. Academy Ruins Legendary Land :symtap:: Add to your mana pool. Spend this mana to play artifact spells or to activate artifact abilities. Kinda looks familiar? Check out Vedalken Engineer. The last thought I had is even more outrageous, kind of the yang to Tolarian Academy's yin... We pulled so much mana from our collective Tolarian Academies that we players broke it and now the artifacts are affected meaning that perhaps Academy Ruins would simply have the text: All artifacts under your control gain ":symtap:: Add to your mana pool." Even better is my personal favorite concept. I card seemingly overdue and somewhat unlikely due to certain Vintage and Legacy cards, but you never know with R&D... of course I'm speaking of a Mana Flare / Heartbeat of Spring (depending on how long one has been playing) for artifacts: Academy Ruins Legendary Land Whenever a player taps an artifact for mana, that player adds a mana of that type to his or her mana pool. I originally included that it should tap of a single colorless, but that seemed like too much. I mean it benefits both players if they are playing mana producing artifacts, and of course any Institution should be open to all who wish to attend.;)

Don't want to sound arrogant here, but I still think my idea of Volrath's Stronghold for artifacts is the best
I was about to look back at your post, quote it, then point out how rubbish it was. Until I read all of it and realised I was about to agree with you
I'd love this card to be printed as it seems abusable without actually being broken. Off the top of my head, it works well against aggro with Bottle Gnomes and may also make an interesting Counterbalance deck. Still, neither idea is that powerful, although both are fun.

Well the ruins are kinda underwater. In my head water = blue mana.

Magus of the Path 3
Artifact Creature - Construct
Indestructable
Magus of the Path cannot Attack or Block.
1t: If two creatures an opponent controls are blocking, do something unnecessarily complex that has no effect on the game; then destroy half the creatures you control and punch yourself in the face.
0/3
keep in mind that tolarian academy was, for the most part, considered broken for the large amounts of mana it could churn out quickly. while a simular version that uses the graveyard could potentially be powerful, its still not the original in terms of brokeness. Mishra's Bauble suddenly becomes a Mox Sapphire with that card in play; all the sac artifacts immediately become rediculous, and as many of them are cheap and disposable, it becomes problematic very quickly.
AcademyRuins LegendaryLand : Add to your mana pool for each artifact you control. Hideously, hideously broken. Unprintable at that power level. Its not the original academy, but it is far too close and generates broken amounts of mana.
AcademyRuins LegendaryLand : Add to your mana pool. Spend this mana to play artifact spells or to activate artifact abilities. Ah, Mishra's Workshop. As a general rule, cards which produce multiple mana really have to have a drawback or else they're problematic, but this isn't really that problematic, though I'd make it so it could only be used to play artifact spells, as activating their abilities gives you the opportunity to sink this mana too often – the reason that the legendary enabler from Kamigawa with this same ability wasn't that good was that it was difficult to use its mana often enough to really be much of an accellerant.
Since it's been announced that there is a cycle of card that "turns into cards on the reserved list" doesn't it make sense that academy ruins would be one of them?
I'd expect:
Academy Ruins:
Land
Academy can't be played from your hand.
Suspend 5: 0 (pay 0 and remove bla bla bla).
:symtap:: add to your mana pool for each artifact you control.
Or some such. Look, they've already done Black Lotus and wheel of fortune...
Creature generation and mana acceleration is hardly a blue ability and except for a direct reference to the original Academy its really out of flavor.
High Tide was acceleration enough for a deck to be inspired by it.
I really would like to see some evidence of this card's name? or maybe some artwork to even speculate on this?
There are some cool ideas on this thread, I like a lot of them, but I really have no idea how Wizards is going to pull off a "fixed" Academy.
I don't know how this will operate, what it will trigger off, but I think its a given that it will make blue mana in a quantity larger than 1. Just look! The place is flooded with blue!
Academy Ruins
Legendary Land
:symtap:: add U to your mana pool. 1U,T: Return target permanent you control to its owner's hand. Twas the end of the Academy and Urza's Drinking problem.
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the art and name for "Academy Ruins" was:
Academy Ruins
Legendary Land (R)
:symtap:: Add to your mana pool for each artifact in your graveyard.
Sadly, that's probably still broken. Based on Tolarian Academy obviously. Post your ideas!
I could see this, and I could see it being not-broken. Keep in mind that Tolarian Acadamy was in vogue back when Legendary permanents didn't destroy each other as a state-based effect. Also bear in mind that we have neither Voltaic Key nor Grim Monolith nor Mana Vault to abuse the excelleration like were availible at that time.
I mean, turn one you drop a couple of Mishra's Baubles you could have four mana on turn two... or you could have wasted 2 baubles and a land drop you your opponent's own Legendary Ruins, or maybe just get Ghost Quartered.
It's abusable that way, not broken.

Quote from Caranthir »
Yawgmoth, the ruler of Phyrexia, Lord of the Wastes, Father of Machines, is DEAD. He's passed on. He is no more! He has ceased to be! He is expired and gone to meet his maker! He is a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace! He kicked the bucket, He has shuffled off his (apparently)mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!
