lol, then why wasn't WW with skyhunter skirmisher played more? FLYING double striker, costing 1WW, yet WW was one of the lowest rated decks in Standard. Also, I play competitive magic only, I play 2 Standard tourneys a week, I place T8 all the time, yet I own 4 Jitte that have NEVER BEEN PLAYED IN A TOURNAMENT. In fact, they don't see play outside of playtesting. They're not that good. Certainly not broken or banworthy.
If Jitte gets banned in any format it will be extended (not likly).
With Mirrodin rotating out of Standard decks are getting pretty boring and the format is getting stale. Having not seen all of Ravnica I cant say that T2's popularity will continue to decrease, but so far Jitte is the only standard staple/spicy brokeness.
It won't be banned in standard.
However, post rotation extended is totally differant...
The vast majority of decks will be aggro (ex: Affinity, The Rock, Madness, G/R Fires, etc) this means there will be ALOT of Jitte.
In the case of skullclamp, matches were decided by who could cast/use clamp first.
In a aggro heavy enviroment matches will be decided quickly based on how fast your men come out and how effectivly you can get them through. With Jitte, 2-4 counters can ruin defenses by wrathing your opponents board or by pumping your guys to crazy big. Also, if they came out faster than you, but you draw Jitte first the life gain saves you until you recover and smash face.
Jitte will be MORE popular in new extended than it is in Standard but since its legendary it is easier to deal with than skullclamp was (since all jittes destroy jittes).
If its going to be banned in any format its new extended, but its unlikly to be banned. (75/25 in favor of staying legal)
plz ban it. its in every deck i play against and it gets boring quickly. I doublt it will be ban in block but with ravnica coming i sense a resugence of weenie decks and that means 4 of jittes in every deck, well almost every deck for those not lure my the jitte's power.
My opinion: should be banned in BLOCK, but not in standard or any larger format. At the moment, standard has enough answers, and with v. shaman in 9th this continues.
IMO it hasn't been a problem because the top deck in standard is Tooth that basically wins if it resolves. Without Tooth you'll see every aggro deck in standard running 4. Heck, I think every aggro deck already tries to run at least a couple. Unless Ravnica REALLY pimps some alternate win conditions like library destruction and makes it good you're gonna see aggro decks ruling, and that means Jittes everywhere.
I only play casual vintage but I've been to a bunch of standard FNMs with friends(I borrow their decks) and it's really pathetic. It's either some Tooth or RDW variant that pops off a great draw or the first aggro deck that consistently draws Jitte. I had a white weenie deck that lost to Tooth in the finals of one FNM. I won a game w/ only a Jitte and a lantern kami. First turn, mox/plains, jitte. Next turn, draw plains and play it, drop the kami and equip. Turn 3, hit for 1 and go nuts. The guy was playing green aggro and had a good draw but couldn't stop it. It's not fun. Jitte is just one of those cards where your opponents eyes roll when it hits the table.
Also, looking at where Ravnica is going w/ cards like that new green creature tutor it's clear they're trying to avoid making cards like Tooth and Nail(ie: overpowered cards that basically win you the game when you resolve it).
The problem w/ cards like Jitte, Cursed Scroll or Masticore is that they do too much for too little. Always the most broken cards are artifacts that give capabilities to colors they shouldn't normally have for too little investment. One only has to look at the standard environment to see every top deck is basically mono-color. That's due to cards like Jitte and to a lesser extent the darksteel swords.
I actually feel that the 'Jitte is legendary' arguement is rather dumb. That's not a reason in its favor really. People's decks are built with jitte, with anti-jitt tech, or both. This is what happened wth skullclamp. When it gets to be more of the both factor, being legendary isn't going to save jitte from ban-tastic experiences.

Waiting patiently for MTGO Leagues to become a priority again. It's been 4 years .
Drop by my Helpdesk if you have any questions/concerns on the Limited forum.
Excited for M13 Limited? What do you think the format will look like? Head over to the limited forum and let us know what you think.
If Sakura-Tribe Elder wasn't printed, I'm almost sure Jitte would have been banned in block. The control decks would get run down before they can even stabilize, and they would have no way to hold down the aggro decks.
You must remember that not only is the hate from other cards for the jitte, but the card itself is hate, due to its legendary status.
Also theres a difference between a very good card, and an insane one like skullclamp. Yes Jitte is very good an can break the game open for you early, but this also depends on a lot of factors going in your favor. And the Gifts Ungiven point is a very good one. Tooth was played Elf and Nail, a format breaking deck if i remember correctly, as well as in almost every other deck such as affinity, where as jitte just isnt as widely played.
Why is it that the cards, Gifts and Jitte, are better than the rest of Kamigawa...WAAAY better. Why do they do this? I could understand every set having its good cards, but the gap is tremendous. They make a ridiculous Jitte in a massively underpowered formatt. That is just recipe for top 8 decklist to have decks that all have one of those cards, with the lower ranking ones being the decks that don't. Also that means that these cards go for $10(gifts) or $15(Jitte) a piece because the are A)darn good and B)everyone wants them.
R&D made a similar, but much larger, mistake in Mirrodin. You had plenty of random great stuff in the set, which was great, but it didn't make a deck(they didn't have much synergy). But then R&D just had to make affinity, which was, yet again, WAAAY better than the other decks(although in this case wasn't about the individual cards).
Yes, Cranial Extraction is good as hate, but the other ones are more versatile. Twincast is good in other formatts because of what you can copy, but not as great in Standard. Cranial Extraction goes for $18 anyway, just as combo hate.
I am not one of those people who says "ban whatever the best deck is, wah wah wah". I just dont like the Top 8 being decided by having 4 copies of $15 cards. Winning is about skill, about finding synergies that are better than whatever your opponent's might have built. It is about piloting, and yes, there is some luck and metagaming(ahh...the internet...). These one-card based decks are just getting anoying.
I would hate to be "Svetlana," when my opponent plays a jitte, because I have already lost unless I board in boat loads of hate. Hate is reactive control and therefore waters down other non-control decks that are forced to sideboard in hate. If Spirit of Resistance and Prismatic Lace where in Standard, that would just be red/black hosing that also forces everyone else to carry natralize, ect...A single artifact or enchantment, other spell, ect...should be something the opponent can work around, just in a weakened state.
The lesson: don't print a few cards that are light-years ahead of the rest of a set, especially if the set is underpowered.
Should the jitte be banned? Well I have none myself, but I would be angry as heck if I bought four and then could use them anymore. They are already out there, and you can use hate against them, even though that is lame and makes everyone's decks more slow and controllish. R&D should avoid future mistakes like this, but the Jitte should stay.
As a sidenote, I wouldn't mind the Jitte if Kamigawa or hopefully Ravnica had/have more artifact hate in the form of nice creatures such as "Viridian Shaman". This is removal that is also a creature, so it is not just control that wastes time. Once Mirrodin and all of its artifact hate leaves, who knows what will happen next...

If a card rediculously skews the format to decks that either play the card or try to beat that card, that card gets banned. Jitte IS the card that beats that card, so it's much harder to judge whether or not it's bannable. The fact that Manriki-Gusari gets played indicates that, yes, equipment IS good and there's some want to destroy equipment.
Jitte was made as a very flavorful card. It does a lot of what it did in the books. As long as you had some fresh blood, you could do anything. This flavorful interperetation yielded the general combat damage clause rather than rely upon the much safer damage to player clause.
I had heard from somewhere that originally it was supposed to make B instead of giving a creature -1/-1. R&D then changed it because it was too much fast mana. Does anyone else know anything about this? I don't remember where I got it. Probably from their website.
Each hit can give you any one of these combinations: +4/+4, -2/-2, 4 life, +2/+2 and -1/-1, +2/+2 and 2 life, -1/-1 and 2 life. Oh, and you can stockpile.
The card makes me angry. I could be playing a game and winning and suddenly this one, single card comes down and swings the game in my opponent's favor. If I'm not playing the card, apparently I'm stupid because I should be. If I have no answer for it, apparently I'm stupid because I should be playing it since it's its own answer. If I am playing it in my deck and don't have it, does my opponent suddenly become the better player?

I must be misremembering it, but I thought the axed ability was "draw a card". Which would make it not just broken, but shattered, ground into tiny shards, and rammed in your eye.
It's the most obviously stupid card since Masticore, imo. They must've playtested it a whole 5 minutes or not at all. 2CC and only 2 equip for what it does is retarded.
They should've made it only add counters after damaging a player or simply make it a 4 casting artifact with a 3 or 4 equip cost. It would still be good.

As I said, one card victories using expensive, almost, "mandatory" cards are just annoying. Its either Gifts or Jitte, there is just no way out of it, except for reactive hate. Not really (although I'm not complaining....*rather it'd be Uktabi Orangutan*), Kamigawa block itself has plenty of Jittehosers....even Jitte itself hoses it.
And I will say it again....
JITTE ACTUALLY BALANCES THE KAMIGAWA BLOCK METAGAME.
Think about it......could White Weenie be a force without it.....not really......Black Hand would be completely fried without it.
Kamigawa would be nothing but Randy Buehler specials of Control v. Control with the occasional red-based burn deck beating Gifts. Kamigawa block is *gasp* balanced BECAUSE OF JITTE.

As I said, banning it would be bad as so many people already bought 4 copies and need them for their decks. For now, as I have already said, it is adaquately hosed.
As a side note, using Jitte to hose Jitte doesn't help the problem of Jitte being too common in decks and becomes so pricey that it becomes yet another entrance barrier.

Ok, let's recap the argument thus far:
Group A Pro Jitte - Jitte isn't broken, it is good, it balances the block meta game, and it has the legendary drawback. Jitte is vulnerably humanlike.
Group B - It is retarded, it wins games all by itself, there's little to no way of dealing with it, and it appears in every deck that has creatures. Jitte is brokenly godlike.
Simply put, Jitte represents one of the better cards in KBC block. In block play, decks either ran Jitte, or Gifts ungiven. Block season is over, so there is no relevance to block arguments. In standard, aggro decks would rather run SofI or SolS that Jitte. There are also DOZENS of ways to deal with it until Rotation. That said, the norm of aggro decks is to utilize cards that synergize with creatures. Naturally, equipment are the best example of 'good synergy.' Jitte is a good example of 'good equipment.' So it makes 100% sense that Jitte has found a home in any aggro deck. Basically, only a bad player would sit here and whine about a good card. Period. If you were a good player, you'd find a way to to shut Jitte down. Not whine about it.
All equipment have an inherent drawback: they cannot function without creatures. If you stop their creatures, Jitte becomes dead. The 2 colors that deal with creatures the best are Black and Red. If you honestly have a problem with Jitte, you need to make a deck that supports removal and try killing every creature your opponent plays. Congratulations, you just beat Jitte!!
even though i dont believe jjitte iis a downright meta warping card like the killclamp i would still like to see it go, mainly because of the annoying WW and Rats that use it! it probably ont be banned and ill just have to run some artfact hate. o well, i guess i have to search for my naturalizes.
peace!

How can anyone say that "a card that is $15 is the cause of winning of Pro Tours/Gran Prixes", how can people understand that a deck is not the one that wins, is just a part of an equation, to win a tournament you need as much skill as you need that $15 dollar cards.
All decks in block have either Umezawa's Jitte or Pithing Needle, and by that I dont mean that all decks need to be "jitte or anti-jitte", the thing is that the block is balanced because of that cards, if there weren't any Pithing Needles (or Otherwordly Journeys), then WW could not, by any chance, win against Gifts Ungiven. If there weren't any Umezawa's Jittes, then mostly all decks in the block would be Control decks (Gifts, MUC) or all Aggro decks would need to have S-TE, or Kodama's Reach.
Also, i dont like the people that say that "Jitte is an overpowered card in an underpowered Block". Most of the block has really great cards, that are BALANCED, of course after Mirrodin one of the must unbalanced block ever printed, this block could appear to us as underpowered, but imagine if CHK would have been released right after Onslaught... that would be a different context, and we'll se CHK as a balanced block, and even overpowered.
Just remember there are a lot of ways to get over Jitte, even when its on the board. Sacrifice, Protection, direct damage, First Strike, Pithing Needle, bouncing, killing the creature in other ways (like Hideous Laughter, Sickening Shoal, Kagemaro, Shining Shoal)... all that options I give to all the Jitte haters out there (and there are more).

If you are refering to me, note that I already said that skill is a factor. I also said that you can hate out the artifact. I do not want it banned, and I am not a "Jitte-Hater". The problem is that you need Jitte or artifact hate(plenty, because people run 3-4 Jittes) because otherwise you are up the creek, even if you are as skilled as Zvi.
In a powerful formatt like Legacy, this card is fine, no problems at all. The problem is that in block and T2, especially after Mirridon's artifact hate rotates out (leaving only natralize and viridian shaman in 9th, and a few more...) this thing is just going to be a larger pain in a lower powered environment.
Why should I have to board in hate, if everyone has Jitte or a reactive hate deck, then things just get boring...

Y mi cabeza caiga
Cuando mi sangre corra
Cuando a tu memoria llegue
Y domine en la penumbra
O el caos termine..."

"Your attack has been rendered quite harmless, it is however, quite pretty." -Saprazzan vizier
"It was probably a lowsy spell in the first place." -Ertai, wizer adept
"The duel was going badly for me and Zur thought I was finished. He boasted that he would eat my soul--but all he ate were his words." -Gustha Ebbasdotter
I think this is what most people expected. I'm not certain it'll get banned now, but I think it is a strong possibility.
And then blue has bounce/counterspells, green has putrefy/rending vines/naturalize, red has shatter, black has....welll.....nothing....
But still, it isnt ban-worthy
