Is it just me or does the artwork for the 'bird' mounts look VERY simmilar?
If I remember correctly Karn, when building Mirrodin, brought creatures from different planes to Mirrodin to create his world. Does this in fact mean that at least some part of Ravica is related to Mirrodin...or that the Plainswalkers, mainly Karn, already have atleast some presence here?
Also, sorry if this has been run into the ground already. I could not find any earlier references to it.
Well, there has been a pretty wide discussion, when the pic appeared for the first time. But generally, I think that the marginal similarity is caused by the plain fact that if you want to ride an airborne beast, you HAVE to design the saddle in the way that is depicted above. Moreover, as for the artistic point of view, the sadde designs seem not to be much similar to me.

That's interesting... But I can't believe any of this could be true... It looks to me WotC wants to give us a completely new world to explore... Flying mounted creatures will always look like some kind of specter...

Its actually not the saddle that comes to my attention, its the actual creature. Because of "Magic Arcana" we all know the the process by which the artists recive thier insturctions, and that there is usually always a 'base' art work for artists to go off of for prominate creatures/places/items/legends. In this case I wish to point out that each of the artists are infact different, this leads me to belive that each of these artists were going off the same 'base' artwork for their design.

While in fact there are quite a few artworks with creatures/people ridding atop specters, that is not always the case. For example Mothrider Samurai . The style guide for Kamigawa is that the airborn battle 'horse' of the white alinded cards is a Moth.
Nevertheless, if you look at the mount, there is one huge difference. The pterons were designed clearly as the Magic counterparts of flying dinosaurs, especially Pteranodon.
But if you look at this beast, it is clearly feathered, resembling the extincted Phororhacos , with the exception that the Phororhacos was not a flying bird. This is a kind of enormous bird of prey. something like the Ice Age aesthirs, that were mastered by skyknights /but again, the aesthirs were more overgrown birds than fantasy creatures/. Okay. Maybe in a few hundred thousands of years, the pteron could have evolved into this. So unless Ravnica is not situated in this time range in relation to Mirrodin, I do not think there is a link between the worlds.

Actually, that is one of the first things that ran trough my head. I could easily see Mirrodin evolving into a city world ahla StarWars' Corsant. I later discounted this because 1. The body types (see the novel cover) have no 'metalic' influnces at all. 2. With the 'political' divisions created by the stark contrasts of the suns, I would find it hard to belive the colours cooporating.
Any way, back to the mounts...
You are correct in noticing the differences between the wings of the animals. With the Mirrodin ones seemming to be made of skin while the Ravica ones are of something else...I am not willing to say that the are made of feathers, but it is deffently not thin skin....I cant tell if the texture on the body is suppost to feathers or scales. Also upon futher inspection I see that the Ravica ones do not have the claws in the wings while the Mirrodin ones do, another similarty to your Phororhacos/Pteranodon comparason.
Still though, with the seemingly endless possibilities of what the creatures could have looked like, I find the similarities very poinent.

Well to tell you something.....You don't have to get technical in here about that...I don't think the artists were supposed to think anything about the Jurassic ages.....just that they were told what to draw in a sense to where the pic represents the story....now it is true Karn did gather things from other worlds to make a new world....so these bird like monstrosoteas are probably from Ravnica, and also the saddle bag wouldn't matter if they don't match from other artworks....think about this....elves....goblins....humans would make a similar or totally different saddle bag....but I don't think that would matter for art for a saddlebag.....just the creature.....

This rumor might have some foundation based on some of the early information about Ravnica, specifically that it will dip into other creature types that were block specific. If that information is confirmed true then that picture might well be a Pteron (the things that the Leonin ride in Mirrodin Block).
I guess no one else read the latest blurb on Ravnica, that said there would be Loxodons in RAV. The common speculation is that Ravnica is a plane full of creatures from other planes, in sort of a democratic gathering. It could be that the Skyhunters were donated from Mirrodin in the not-too-distant future to assist with the defense of the city. Though the idea that Karn got them from Ravnica works pretty well too.
Is it just me or is this picture highly inefficient? I mean, what's he gonna swing his sword at? Anything within his reach will colide with the bird anyway, and that doesn't seem like good tactics to me..
Good point. Maybe these guys's work is a mix of aerial scouting and leading/inspiring the legions below them to go into the battle?

Yeah, I needn't to go so deep. Consider it to be a professional deformation.

Well. I presume that the dipping into block specific creature types is meant mainly card-wise. Loxodons - OK. Skyhunter was never a creature type, they were Cat Knights. Also, there was not a single Pteron in Mirrodin cycle. Only Pteron Ghost, and that is a Spirit, I believe. These guys are other kind of airborne knights, but I do think them neither being cats nor riding pterons - and not to be called Skyhunters.

So, there is a thread that says that there will be plenty of creature types in Ravnica, including rocs. Quite frankly, I see a roc-like beast, not a pteron-like beast at the discussed pic. So much for the pteron theory.

I think these are adult Ruhks. But that's just me, I guess.
As for fighting, the bird could swoop down to attack ground creatures, or struggle face to face with an aerial creature, while the rider could attack in high speed "swipe" attacks as the bird flies underneath an opponnent or lean out and slash at the opponnent's mount's wings.

Fa - ce - tious - ly: The only English word with every vowell in order.
You are totally right. Karn did swipe things from other plains. So there is nothing to flat say "no this isnt the same creature". They do look alike, as if the artist was giving a guideline to fllow but not an exact sketch.
Its certinly not beyond the realm of possiblity that it IS the same creature. They to look very close.
Obviously the rider isnt leonin, but winged creature does like familar.
I thought it was Memnarch who "swiped" things from other plains.
Mirrodin was Karn's creation, and Memnarch was its caretaker. Karn yanked stuff from other worlds for Mirrodin, and Memnarch watched it evolve. Memnarch also used to be the Mirari, but that's totally unrelated.
if you think about it, every world so far has been linked to Dominaria (Kamigawa included; Toshi is the ancestor of Tetsuo Umezawa). but that's something for the Storyline forum, not here.
imo, yes, they are similar. but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. the steed here and the Pterons of Mirrodin are clearly different, so it's just a passing similarity. Kamigawa's fly white guys were depicted in the same poses, just riding Great Moths instead. so i don't believe that there's a true relation between the Pterons and these things.

Loxadon really need to be mentioned in the story this time around...

But the arts do look very similar, in the head and body shape; I think there could well be a link
I really don't think these are the same creatures we saw on Mirrodin. If anything, I think these are either griffins or bird-like creatures.
